Had i been driving through NJ and stopped to fill up that would have surprised me. Apparently also not legal to pump your own gas in Oregon unless in a rural county

Working at a gas station has always been something used as a sort of threat as to what a kid will end up doing if he does poorly in school. Except in NJ - there, doctors, lawyers, and astrophysicists aren’t capable of pumping gas but a high school dropout is. NJ State Senate President Sweeney’s statement is proof that he’s held that job for too long. If I’m going to wait for an attendant to pump my gas I’m also going to make him clean the windshield and check the oil.

From what I understand Oregon has a bill in the hopper allowing self-serve statewide.

Interesting. I can't remember the last time a station employee pumped gas for me. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw someone available to do it.

It's been that way forever in NJ, pretty weird the first time one encounters it.

Gotta love New Jersey, where the service station attendee asks "how much f*cking gas ya want?"

Odd. I'll have to top off a rental in Newark before turning it in at the airport in April, now I won't be surprised.

I go to New Jersey twice a year and used to let them fill my tank for the trip back because it was about 15 - 20 cents cheaper per gallon, then the State decided to raise taxes on gas so now it's more expensive then most of New York State. I just drive back into New York and pump my own gas now.

It's only for rural counties, so gas stations can still operate w/o an attendant.

Quote
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Pumping your own gas — anytime day or night — may soon be an option in nearly half of Oregon's 36 counties.

The Oregon Senate gave final approval Tuesday to a bill that allows self-service fueling in 15 rural counties. Drivers in three coastal counties —Tillamook, Curry and Clatsop — would be allowed to pump their own gas between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The bill now goes to Gov. Kate Brown for her signature.

Supporters say the bill would help cut costs at rural gas stations that might close early instead of paying to staff full-service pumps.

The Bulletin reports that stations with a retail space, such as a convenience store, would be required to continue full-service operations.

Oregon and New Jersey are the only states with restrictions on self-service fueling.

Nah...

The station attendants will call their cousin Vinnie who'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

Little known fact about New Jersey: Currently 2 residents are leaving the state for every new out of State resident who moves in.

Hmm...wonder why?

I live in Florida, just yesterday I was filling up and a guy came up in a Ford F150 pulling a Smoker on a trailer. It wasn't til he pulled out that I realized it was in operation the whole time he was pumping gas, he left a trail of wood smoke as he pulled away.

I've seen people smoking cigs inside their car while filling up, but then ashing outside the window.

They're probably of a similar mindset as the people that think seat belts kill more people than they save lol

You can't fix stupid...

I pulled a car over for speeding one night, and they ended up stopped at a gas station next to the pumps. Inside was an older women, and an elderly lady (daughter and mother), and the car was packed floorboard to ceiling with paper trash/junk. The elderly female was on oxygen, and the tank was wedged in between the front two seats. Both of the occupants were smoking, and thought nothing of doing that next to a gas pump, in a car packed full of paper, with an oxygen cylinder, open and feeding a cannula to one of them.

I wrote that ticket quick and got out of there.

I live in CA, (not much longer, but that is not the point) and I was pumping gas 20 years ago. there was a puddle of who knows what between me and a woman smoking a cigarrette an me telling her that it probably wasn't the best of ideas to smoke at a gas station. She agreed and tossed her butt right into that aforementioned puddle.

CA still finds it ok to do that - morons pumping gas. You can not, however, purchase a lighter (to light a #%&*$# furnace) without providing evidence that you are older than 21 - because it could be used as a device to light a gig, which is a despicably feloniously incomprephensibly atrocious crime unless you are of age. We're good though with you shooting civilians in wherever country before you can smoke or drink.

I'll have you know that most of my cynicism comes from a vet that I met walking his dog in a no-dog park. His comfort dog. It was Siberian Husky and I could understand why it gave him comfort. And also why he needed it. And I saw Rangers asking for his license to walk his super-well behaved dog was doing where skittish horses almost trampled me and no question asked. And then I read about people being denied their pet hamster on a #%&*$# 4h flight and it making the 'news'. And people supporting neo-nazis driving their cars into citizens. And people supposedly being moderators letting others get away scot-free with doing what they are supposed to be moderating?

And then I question my believe that this nation that I just became a citizen of is going be what I thought it would be. I did this becaused I believe the sincerity of most. Why do you let a complete stranger get away this it?

Exactly what does that mean?

Sorry, @ harryw
