Looks really cool. Will the game have a meaningful single player campaign? Weapon modeling looks nice and I imagine the planetary exploration is going to be pretty special. Just so much about it I don't know. When will it finally release?

Yep there will be a long single player campaign, they just showed it off last December:
One hour of ameplay with developer commentary:
The release won't be soon i think, my best bet is at least another year for the single player and more for the MMO/multiplayer part.
The multiplayer part is playable but it's still alpha with lots of bugs, and lots of content missing..but still you can see the promise it holds, it absolutely awesome even now in it's buggy state.
That's impressive, thank you. Was this always the vision for their game or did it happen that as large capital was obtained they expanded their vision and decided to go all out? This is the direction a series like Mass Effect should go. In reality I'd prefer to see newer scifi games go this route and give them a chance over ME. I'd like to see some new, inventive scifi worlds come to life by third party indie guys like I assume these guys are or even see a new Star Trek series come out that's based off the original 1960s show and have it have that retro look be open universe like this game where you get to literally travel to planets and enter their atmospheres in real time. So much could be done. An "Alien" game would be awesome where perhaps you travel to a planet and on the way you find a derelict ship that you infiltrate that has the whole story and size of Alien Isolation but then you get to move on to an actual planet that you can explore the entirety of.

If you ask about the single player campaign then yes it was planned from the beginning. Basically you can play the single and your character transfers to the MMO at the end. About the scope of the games: Originally these were meant to be a Wing Commander/Privateer successor, but the funding (these are crowdfunded) exploded...literally...they asked for 4 million on kickstarter, and now they have 180 million dollars ($180.000.000). So the scope of the game expanded, originally the planetary landings were planned to be added after release, but they could expand the team so they are already in. Also they are working on lots of new technologies. For example heres a video about the cloud tech shown on the above video.
Also it will take time to finish the game, now it's in alpha, they laid down the foundation, and just started adding the content and professions, etc.
I played the heck our of Privateer and the Wing Commander series. Personally, I'm not interested in Star Citizen , but Squadron 42 has definitely piqued my interest. Looking forward to it.

Yeah many feels like it. I'm personally interested in both. SQ42 because of Wing Commander, SC because since Privateer i wished for a real space MMO...SWG was the best so far, but sadly it's gone... lots of us ex SWG guys hoping SC to fill the void.
I bought into it, but as you guys have already mentioned, Sqn 42 is the only thing that interests me... but I haven't played the game for ages... I'm just fed up of waiting, waiting to see what all those many millions of dollars invested in it, will finally produce after so long...

Well it certainly feels long as it's open development from the beginning, but it's 5 years spent is not that much on overall. Many single player games spent this time in development, and those weren't made by a startup. I really wish we could play it already, but i can understand it takes a long time to finish.
Now I'm confused. What is Squadron 42? Is it part of Star Citizen because a video of it was posted in this thread. I watched part of that video of single player campaign stuff with voice actors thinking this was Star Citizen but I just now realized its titled Squadron 42.
