Last year I used turbo tax's web based program, and it just deducted the cost out of my return. No need to buy ahead of time.
Sager NP8671 17.3" Notebook, i74720HQ (3.6GHz), GTX 970M (3.0GB), 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB 7200RPM HD, TrackIR 4, CH HOTAS and rudder pedals

I've been using a web based tax program called TaxAct for 5 or 6 years now. Nothing to download and no software on my system other than a PDF file of my final return each year. It was really cheap when I started out--maybe $25 total for federal and state plus e-filing of both. It's gone up to around $50 now, but then if I sign up to take it by November of the previous year they give me a 30% discount, so it comes out around $35. It's still cheaper than Turbo. Hell, even H.R. Block's program is cheaper than Turbo. https://www.taxact.com/?sc=17042648....ds&dclid=CP_8ubPi5tgCFQw8TwodOo8L2QCheers

Amazon has advantages, but not always. For example, wife wants this book.. The Science of Cooking: Every Question Answered to Perfect Your Cooking (Hardcover – September 19, 2017) When you click on the reasonably priced Amazon link of $30.00 you get: "Temporarily out of stock." Barnes & Noble in Baton Rouge has the book in stock for the same price. So we're off in a few minutes to do some outdoor mall shopping (including B&N, enjoying while it still exists), if just to get out of the house (going stir crazy after all the cold) and get in some walking exercise.

Web based tax filing ..... how safe are those ?
a quick google ....
“Using tax preparation software (that you install on your computer) can be safer than online tax preparation. With software, a taxpayer is not putting their personal information on a company’s server, but maintains control of their own data. This can eliminate the risks associated with a data breach at the tax preparation company.”

. So I don't see the demise of brick and mortars just yet. I also believe that as long as people just *want* to get out and shop, they'll be around.
.
No one is saying that the brick&mortar retailers will be going away entirely. What will happen though is that we will end up with a handful of dominant players and the rest will be gone. So no, physical stores will not go extinct but there will be a very large reduction in the overall footprint.
