We bought an HP inkjet a couple of years ago, and it's been a nightmare. The only drivers that HP provides for it do not work well with Windows 8 and above. Almost any time we want to use the printer, you need to uninstall and reinstall the printer.

Was just looking at an Epsom XP-440 for $49, but then read online it won't allow you to use 3rd party ink.

Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap, simple, and reliable inkjet printer for home use? Mostly just printing out kids homework and amazon return labels...

I would go to Amazon.com and enter my criteria (price, 4+ star reviews etc.) and see what comes up. Then order it there or buy local.

Over time, you will get a better value from a laser printer. The biggest problem with inkjet is that, unless you print on a regular basis, you will spend more ink just cleaning the heads than you will use to actually print something. The initial cost of laser is higher, but over the long term you will end up spending less since it will always work. Toner does not dry out.

https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L...p;keywords=black+and+white+laser+printer

Toner cartridges are not cheap but you will get so much mileage out of them that you will have trouble remembering when you bought your last toner cart. With ink jet you will buy ink more often than paper, with laser it will be the opposite.

Agreed on the laser. I am very happy so far with my Brother I got at Wal-Mart almost 18 months ago.

My HP color laser is over six years old and has printed thousands of pages with not one single issue. Granted, it is color and cost a lot more than a Brother but I have never printed something and had to reprint because a nozzle was clogged.

Ditto on laser. We do just black and white documents. There are regular and large toners, the regular lasts us well over a year for about $50, with a good bit of printing.
This is like ours, but newer. They've gotten pretty cheap, under $100. It's a wireless network printer to boot. I paid over $200 for ours which is wired a few years ago and it has been easily worth it.
We print photos through Walgreens, pick up in an hour after uploading to the site.
They get you on the cost of that ink with the inkjets.

I bought a HP black & white laser printer/scanner/copier for under $70 cdn 4 or 5 years ago. It has been great. Not a single problem. I finally had to put a cartridge in it last year...which was about the same price as the printer biggrin but for years or ZERO problems , no dried up ink prefect reliability. ...go laser

The 3 or 4 times during that time , that I have actually needed some kind of colour print, I went to Staples with a jump drive and paid $1.00 smile

If for some reason you MUST have an inkjet....just buy the cheapest thing you can find on sale and throw it away when it breaks and buy another

I haven't had a printer at home for at least 7-8 years now. I just don't print anything from home anymore.

I sort of agree. For high quality color prints, go with an Epson, 6 color instead of 4, however for basic color anything that functions will do the job.

I go with Canon printers all the way. Have owned them all and by far the best printer and cheapest replacement cartridges.

OK. You guys have me sold on laser. But I think we want to print in color, for the kids (not necessarily photos, but other kid type stuff)

Load me up with suggestions for color laser printers!

HP is the king of laser printers and has been for many, many years. Mine is not in production any longer but I would never consider another brand. I am not saying that a Brother, or other brand, won't do well for you, just expressing my brand bias.

Don`t think it will matter what brand of printer you get, being a color laser printer, cartridges will be far more expensive. My office Canon copy /Fax/printer uses toner cartridges and they are
around $117.89/ each. that was just for a black and white one.

Wow. That is steep. The black cart for my HP is around $60.

Very nice. The duplex feature is something you might rarely use, but it is will be very handy when you print something bigger than a few pages. Mine does not have that so I have to flip a stack of paper and refeed it, which is annoying when printing a big manual.

Love my wireless Canon. When I can keep it connected after a power outage.
Even use my phone to remote print on it.

OMG!! I'm agreeing with cichlidfan again! +1,000 for a color laser printer!! At least there are other proponents of laser printers so I'm not agreeing with JUST cichlidfan biggrin biggrin biggrin

In all seriousness, I used to do my own inkjet color refills and that was cheap! How cheap? Printing out D&D books cheap. I would buy PDFs from DriveThruRPG or other sites, get my PDFs, print them out in full color, and soft/hard bind them. Did the same for a lot of game manuals, especially for DCS. Oh, DCS A10C had three manual revisions? No problem!! New DCS BS2 module? Print out the damn manual! However, my biggest problem, especially for these game books, was moisture. A drop from condensation on my drink glass..... and my beautiful book is ruined!!

I've since switched to a color laser printer and that worry is gone. My color prints are nowhere near as gorgeous as with an inkjet printer, but I no longer worry about water or moisture damaging my printouts. I do wish I've kept an inkjet printer; my last one was a 6-ink professional photo printer that I got off eBay! I still have a ton of inks, but it's simply easier and cheaper to just go to the local Tesco and get the pictures printed out there.... if the wife ever commits to wanting pictures printed out. So far, she's happy to just look at them on a PC screen. For kids' projects and schoolwork, the color laser printer does fine.

Unfortunately, I've not done the math on color laser printing vs. color inkjet printing.... a few people have claimed that laser is cheaper over time, and it does feel like it, but I don't have the hard numbers to prove it. I did have numbers before to prove how cheap self-refilling is compared to buying OEM refills, but I have nothing on my laser printer.

It is OK. Outside of DCS issues, I am usually right. Besides, I was recently issued a temporary ban from ED's forum, so I might be right about that too!! wink
