Crystal River Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Crystal River, Florida. Opened in 1990, it is anchored by Rural King.

History
Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation proposed Crystal River Mall in 1988, with an announced opening date of mid-1990.[2] The mall opened on October 17, 1990, with guest appearances from Phyllis Diller, Jack Jones, and The Lettermen. Upon opening, it included three anchor stores: Belk-Lindsey, Sears, and Kmart, with approximately 85 percent of the inline retail space occupied. The mall's floor plan was described by a DeBartolo spokesperson as "a giant wheel with spokes", with a food court occupying the center.[3] It also featured a 65-foot-high fabric roof, which required an exception from city council.[4] J. Byrons had originally been proposed as the fourth anchor.[5] Instead, the fourth anchor site was sold to J. C. Penney, which opened on September 30, 1992.[6] Regal Entertainment Group added a movie theater to the mall in 1998.[7]
In the 2000s, the mall became increasingly vacant due in part to its location: while it was built to the north side of Crystal River, most of the city's retail development occurred to the south instead. By 2011, it was at 77 percent vacancy, making it one of the least-tenanted malls owned by Simon Property Group, which bought the DeBartolo corporation. Simon had also closed the mall office and neglected to maintain the building, which by 2011 had a leaking roof. The mall entered foreclosure in 2011 and was sold to Boxer Properties of Dallas, Texas.[8] Sears closed its store in 2012,[9] followed by J. C. Penney in 2013.[10] On August 2nd, 2013, it was announced Belk would be closing sometime mid-January 2014.[11] Rural King took over the vacated Sears in 2014.[12] On December 31st, 2016, it was announced that Sears Holdings was closing some 180 additional stores, among which was mall anchor Kmart. This Kmart location closed its doors for the last time on Sunday, March 26th, 2017, leaving roughly 60 employees without jobs, some of which could either apply at the few remaining local stores, or receive severance pay if they were employed full-time.[13]

There was a Gander Mtn. store here that only lasted for about two years. It is still empty and right across the street is a Walmart that has been here for about 25 years.

I heard that some Gander stores would reopen soon as "Gander Outdoors"

Does Walmart even go into the heart of major cities? I have no idea, I’ve only seen them in towns/suburbs. I haven’t spent much time in major cities.

KMart killed itself when they went low quality way back in the late 1980's. I get that it was supposed to be really inexpensive, but what happened was it went cheap. Even stuff like tackle boxes and fishing gear was just trash. Yes, it was really low priced, but none of it lasted worth a damn. Their clothes went the same way...shirts poorly made, pants that fit like irregulars, etc.

I went toTarget yesterday. The place was packed. The internet issue is just causing a thinning of the herd. The weakest are dying, the strongest are surviving the storm, and even thriving. It happened to the airlines. Deregulation was blamed for killing off some carriers. Truth was, they were dead men walking. Only some government contracts were keeping them on their feet. The weak ones went under and airlines, like American who I was lucky enough to be with, got stronger. Ya gotta change with the times and roll with the punches.

People complain when their businesses shut down and thus laying off workers and people complain when businesses want to move to their town and create jobs.


You just can't please some people.

Close to 20 years ago, Interstate Brands built a bakery (Sunbeam bread, Twinkies, etc) in the town I grew up in, and one of the stipulations was that no smells were to escape the building. People actually complained when they could smell baking bread.
