Haha! I remember those Samsonite Gorilla commercials. They were still being shown in the late 70's. I guess it was a successful ad campaign!

That's because they are delivering Amazon packages. I recall not too long ago, the USPS was talking about stopping Saturday delivery. My how times have changed.

The K-Mart's around here closed about 7 years ago. The building is still vacant. The Sears closed in early 2017. Sears was my go to store for tools. I still have my Craftsman socket and ratchet sets I bought back in the late 70's. When I owned my own home everything was Craftsman, table saw, radial saw, lawnmower, snowblower, Kenmore appliances

Here is how things went at the Crystal River ( Florida ) Mall:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_River_Mall

Quote

Crystal River Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Crystal River, Florida. Opened in 1990, it is anchored by Rural King.

History
Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation proposed Crystal River Mall in 1988, with an announced opening date of mid-1990.[2] The mall opened on October 17, 1990, with guest appearances from Phyllis Diller, Jack Jones, and The Lettermen. Upon opening, it included three anchor stores: Belk-Lindsey, Sears, and Kmart, with approximately 85 percent of the inline retail space occupied. The mall's floor plan was described by a DeBartolo spokesperson as "a giant wheel with spokes", with a food court occupying the center.[3] It also featured a 65-foot-high fabric roof, which required an exception from city council.[4] J. Byrons had originally been proposed as the fourth anchor.[5] Instead, the fourth anchor site was sold to J. C. Penney, which opened on September 30, 1992.[6] Regal Entertainment Group added a movie theater to the mall in 1998.[7]
In the 2000s, the mall became increasingly vacant due in part to its location: while it was built to the north side of Crystal River, most of the city's retail development occurred to the south instead. By 2011, it was at 77 percent vacancy, making it one of the least-tenanted malls owned by Simon Property Group, which bought the DeBartolo corporation. Simon had also closed the mall office and neglected to maintain the building, which by 2011 had a leaking roof. The mall entered foreclosure in 2011 and was sold to Boxer Properties of Dallas, Texas.[8] Sears closed its store in 2012,[9] followed by J. C. Penney in 2013.[10] On August 2nd, 2013, it was announced Belk would be closing sometime mid-January 2014.[11] Rural King took over the vacated Sears in 2014.[12] On December 31st, 2016, it was announced that Sears Holdings was closing some 180 additional stores, among which was mall anchor Kmart. This Kmart location closed its doors for the last time on Sunday, March 26th, 2017, leaving roughly 60 employees without jobs, some of which could either apply at the few remaining local stores, or receive severance pay if they were employed full-time.[13]

AFAIK, the Rural King store is doing OK.

I just saw an article about Gander Mountain resurrecting as Gander Outdoors:

Gander Outdoors Announces 69 New Store Openings

There was a Gander Mtn. store here that only lasted for about two years. It is still empty and right across the street is a Walmart that has been here for about 25 years.

I heard that some Gander stores would reopen soon as "Gander Outdoors"

I doubt this one will. It has been closed for at least six months and the VA gun laws, as far as I know, preclude them from selling firearms. Even the local Walmart does not sell guns, unlike the one I frequent when in Pennsylvania.

Yes i agree it wasn't the initial cause but e-commerce was the nail in the coffin ...but not the only nail.

My small town's KMart closed about 3-4 years ago. Our small Sears outlet closed last year...which really sucked because I bought a lot of stuff there...2 riding lawnmowers, garage door opener, air compressor, assorted tools, etc.

Our Super Walmart killed KMart because it was built about 1/2 mile away and was easier to get to. Thanks to Sears leaving, I had to drive 30 miles to Ft Wayne IN to buy a refrigerator and range and had to wait two weeks for it to be delivered. There are zero appliance stores in my town.

And then there is Amazon Prime. Welcome to the future. I buy about 95% of the things that I can't get in my town from Amazon. I have a UPS truck in my driveway about once every two weeks or so dropping off packages. I could have driven in the snow 30 miles to a Lowes store to buy an LP conversion kit for my new stove...but I figured I could wait two days and didn't feel like making the drive...so Amazon it was. Right on time...free two day shipping, no state sales tax...

I had one of my Jeep tires (Pro Comp MT eXtreme 33x12.50x15) run over a couple nails and couldn't be patched...ordered one from Amazon...good price, two day shipping...took it to Walmart to have it mounted for $20. smile

If I absolutely need something right now I can usually find it at some stores around me...but if I can wait a couple of days, Amazon it is. Do I feel bad? Not really. They are providing a great service.

There are twenty Walmarts within a twenty mile radius of my house - maybe 4 of those could be considered to be "at the edge of town".

Half of them are those "Neighborhood Market Walmarts" that are basically grocery stores plus a bit of stuff you wouldn't typically find at a grocery store, the rest are full Supercenters. Closest one to me is actually a two story Supercenter.

Your comment reminds me of a real fluke though - I did a 150 mile relocation in '98 and had eliminated a lot of what I owned prior to the move.

Afterward I bought this 8 dollar chefs knife at a K-Mart, thinking it'd be a "temporary item". That was not the case.

That thing has had every person who's ever used it ask me "Where'd you get THIS thing?" - and I'm talking people who've had knives that cost over $200.

Matter of fact, in "bang for buck" terms I might have to say it was the best thing I've ever bought. Strange.

It's still (by far) my main kitchen knife right now.

The local K mart before it finally shut down was in a horrible state with barely any product in the store and maybe 2 employees at any one time. I haven't seen a Sears in several years.

I went toTarget yesterday. The place was packed. The internet issue is just causing a thinning of the herd. The weakest are dying, the strongest are surviving the storm, and even thriving. It happened to the airlines. Deregulation was blamed for killing off some carriers. Truth was, they were dead men walking. Only some government contracts were keeping them on their feet. The weak ones went under and airlines, like American who I was lucky enough to be with, got stronger. Ya gotta change with the times and roll with the punches.

Our local Target is suffering. Not enough transgendered people here, I guess.

Hey now. Don't judge. Once I get rid of the hair on my face you'll never be able to tell. But I prefer Walmart too, actually. Much better selection. As a matter of fact, I didn't find what I was looking for so today it's of to Walmart. I went to Target because it's so close. Still, the damn place WAS packed.

Bingo.

No doubt that the physical retail store footprint has decreased and will continue to decrease but it will certainly not go away entirely. Walmart and Target are the dominant players in the big box retail sector so they will be around for a long time.

You just can't please some people.

Close to 20 years ago, Interstate Brands built a bakery (Sunbeam bread, Twinkies, etc) in the town I grew up in, and one of the stipulations was that no smells were to escape the building. People actually complained when they could smell baking bread.

I remember the awesome smells from the Holsum bread bakery that used to be in Miami back during the 1970's and 1980's. I never had any complaints!
