Hello, at my monthly web-research I've seen that Logitech now offers the old Saitek flightsim hardware series at their own page, but it seems they have retired the Combat Rudder Pedals and the whole Cessna Flight Controller series. Great idea! Especially to retire the Combat Pedals! Now another good piece of hardware for combat flight siming is gone!

Oh yes, you could really be glad that you have them already! I bet we can now see how the prices at ebay for remnants of this hardware reach a ridiculous level. I always wanted to buy a used Cougar in good condition, because I have missed it during it's time of production, but they are more as twice expensive now used, as they were sold those days new. So I dusted off my old FLCS and TQS and modified them to USB. By the way, I now have also missed the Combat Rudder Pedals , cause I'm busy with the rest of my homepit and thought I could buy them at a later time, especially as there is a problem with the width of my leg area I wanted to fix before I had ordered them. Now I must use the TM rudder pedals. They fit perfectly, cause they are smaller, but the Saitek were absolutely my favorite ones. They had a much more realistic appearance and the hardware reviews were also always good.

Insane price for a Combat Rudder set... £328! No thanks! I got mine from a fellow SimHQ member who was upgrading to fancier rudder pedals The downside now is that if this set goes, I don't know if I want to pay that much for a Saitek/ Logitech set. Might be a good idea to start saving for MFG/Slaw pedals!

Is it me or did Logitech ramp up the price of the X56? I remember seeing the X55 for sale for around the $399 (NZD) mark here in New Zealand at the time, with the X56 basically replacing it for the same price. However, they are now being advertised as Logitech X56 and they are now anywhere between $449 and $499 here for the same product? Without some serious re-engineering, I don't see how Logitech can magically make the X56 so much more reliable to justify the added $50+ price tag?

Are you looking at the official Logi webpage? Take a look at other sites, local retailers, or Amazon to see what the "real" price is.

I never looked at the Logitech page, I only looked at local retailers. One of our price comparison websites (pricespy.co.nz) also contains archived prices and sure enough, the X55 went for $349.95 whereas the X56 is now nowhere to be found for less than $449.95. I found 1 store that has it for $379 but has no stock and status is set to....pre-order?? so I'm not sure if they actually sell it. All other mainstream retailers all sell it for $449.95 with one of them asking $499.95.

I never understood those companies. Since the beginning of home cockpit building, most guys have built an F-16 cockpit, because it was the only fighter aircraft you could get a realistic simulation which features an interface to control also all the outputs of your pit. TM than comes with the HOTAS Cougar. I bet nearly every guy who made an F-16 pit bought it. They made an exchangeable grip and told that there will be other grips and hardware in the future. It never happened. Than the DCS A-10C hit the shelves and TM made the Warthog. Instead of making it compatible with the old system, so you could at least use the throttle with something like an adaptor with the new stick, they decided to retire the Cougar completely. Really great solution for cockpit builders! They never made a new standalone F-16 throttle for the Warthog, although they could use the old Cougar unit and modify the electronics only. Now they announce the new F/A-18 grip, but it’s still the same like with the old Cougar throttle. You have no matching compatible throttle for an F/A-18 system (the A-10 throttle is far away from the real F/A-18 throttle). I don’t know like you guys think of it, but I want a realistic HOTAS system if I spent nearly 500 bucks for it and I want a system which is really modular, so I can use my old hardware I also spent a lot of money for, with this one too. Especially if the company told that there will be other exchangeable parts in the future. The other solution is, like I always did it, because I didn’t want to spent so much money for a HOTAS which is at the end far away from perfect, buy something in the mid range and modify it by yourself. The problem is, there exists no more mid range! On one side you could buy a system that costs nearly as much as a used car or at the other side you get only cheap totally unrealistic crap. I always had an eye on the CH-Products HOTAS and hoped that they will do a more realistic throttle for their system, but this also never happens. For racing wheels it’s the same now. I always used the mid range of Logitech , like the Driving Force Pro and later the Driving Force GT, because I like racing games but it’s not my priority in simulation. So I looked for a wheel which has a good force feedback and is around the 150€ price range. Now no more such wheels exist. For this price you only get cheap crap with vibration feedback (yes this ridiculous feature has a comeback) which looks like someone has broken it out of the DeLorean from the movie Back to Future. I really would like to see some new game controller hardware in the mid range, which is of good quality, looks a bit more like the real thing and is affordable to everyone.

Yeah, I saw that. Evidently, the Combat pedals had an issue with wiring failing . . . but still. There go my plans to replace my Simpeds . . .
Anyway, of the options left, what is the best for new rudder pedals? Yeah, I saw that. Evidently, the Combat pedals had an issue with wiring failing . . . but still. There go my plans to replace my Simpeds . . .
Anyway, of the options left, what is the best for new rudder pedals? IMO it is VKB's mk III or IV. Readily available and cheaper than the make on demand alternatives. Excellent workmanship movement and accuracy. The only con is the lack of toe brakes. I got the mkiii right after using the Saitek combat pedals and it was a great improvement. Highly recommended.

Prices depends on sellers, in Amazon.com X-52 cost ~$150 and X-52 PRO ~$200 that is not far from price range for then during years. Same on Logitech page. BTW - Mechanical/electronics of Saitek Combat pedal is the same of Saitek PRO Flight pedal - just the aluminum foot rest make then all this "best"?

Unfortunately, the lack of toe brakes is a no go for me. No way I try taxiing in a sim without them nowadays.

Anyway, of the options left, what is the best for new rudder pedals? You have "plenty" options - even not counting VKB - in "High end" pedals, all with "joe brakes": Baur BRD F2/F3 - all metal, bearings, contactless sensors MFG Crosswind - composite frame, bearings, contactless sensors Slaw Viper RX - all metal, bearings, contactless sensors
