Very interesting article here with an interview with the director. https://io9.gizmodo.com/denis-villeneuve-is-still-wrapping-his-head-around-why-1820676210IMHO, this movie was not a "crowd pleaser" mainstream hit for the simple fact that the first film was also not one. You also have some other secondary issues like the fact that the movie was almost 3 hours long.

I don’t mind 3 hours. Fact is, the movie dosappointed. It wasn’t bad, but fell well short of the original. Not nearly as atmospheric. It takes more than big cgi sets to create atmosphere.

Which also leads to the other major point made by some fans - A sequel wasn't really demanded or needed. I personally thought the movie was excellent but yes, it was still not on the same level as the original.

I would’ve preferred a game, in retrospect. A modern version of the old BR game would be nice. I don’t feel the urge to buy this one, but I do want to see it again to give it anther shot. Sometimes I change my mind when I get to see a borderline movie at home.

I would’ve preferred a game, in retrospect. A modern version of the old BR game would be nice. . I would have liked that as well but that won't be happening considering the current PC game market climate and trends. In other words, a Blade Runner game would have most likely been a poor seller.

By the time I tried to go see it, I couldn't find a theater showing it. Yeah, the days of even crappy movies being shown at the theater for several months are long gone. Wheels

Wheels Attendance at movie theaters has been stagnant for over a decade now so if a movie isn't filling lots and lots of seats, it gets booted pretty quickly.

Which imo creates a vicious cycle that forces Hollywood to just generate more crap to keep the screens from going dark. Wheels I can see your point but the main culprit is competition from other sources like watching movies "on demand" on cable or streaming them on the internet. This is especially true for consumers under the age of 30. People still love movies. They are just preferring to watch them in other ways besides seeing them in a movie theater.

The BR sequel simply suffered from two extremely severe plot holes - the villain's main motive, had it been to rule a galaxy of obedient Replicant slaves would have been somewhat converional, but at least it would have made sense. But nooo... he "can't produce them fast enough" without working genitalia - WTF, has anyone thought about the implications, like biomass conversion for growing billions of new Replicants when you're apparently struggling to feed the Billions of existing humans and Replicants with your current brand of Soylent Green?
- Deckard, having dialed the paranoia level up to eleven while hiding for decades in irradiated Las Vegas (how?), goes to visit his daughter after "dying" without leaving a convincing trail of fake evidence
I don't know what it is that makes Hollywood particularly blind to gaping plot holes. I can but assume that they simply have a very low opinion of the audience, and sufficient box office data points to back it up. Visually and sound scape wise the film was top notch, like Prometheus and Covenant. But that's JUST NOT ENOUGH.

Like those movies, it felt “forced”. They didn’t have the level of story they could have for any of these and just cranked out more visually stunning but lifeless movies, not nearly on par with the original work.

Hollywood screenwriters are lazy as hell these days--or the producer's committee that has final say in what makes it into a film and doesn't truly thinks the audience is dumb and only wants silly effects. Whatever the reason, more often than not nowadays major films are full of problems. Sometimes I'll see a decent one like "Mr. Right," that while not perfect, adequately service the audience with decent writing... but then I'll see laughable crap like Alien Covenant, wooden idiot characters like in Promethius or pure cardboard like Rogue One. One wonders how "The Martian" and "Interstellar" managed to slip through the cracks and make it to the theater. Oh... well the Martian's screenplay was written by the author of the book, which explains why it was fantastic, and Interstellar, major embellishments to the laws of physics aside, was quite inspirational as well. But Ssnake is right, special effects don't make a good film anymore. We need strong stories. Oh, and if you haven't seen this yet: http://www.br9732.com/Take a VR tour of Deckard's original apartment--works without VR, too.

That's easy. Both Ridley Scott and Chris Nolan have a LOT of influence and power in Hollywood. They can get projects pushed through that would not be possible for some unknown director.

I think you misunderstood me, MadDog. Interstellar and Martian had GREAT stories; my question was referring to the other movies.
