I wish you joy of your prize, Lou. And a better home it could not have found.

I love how a find like this prompts members of this forum to indulge in research, WW1 WWILFing is SO rewarding. :-)

I' was guilty of the same but was stopped short by the by the 8.5 hours.

Eberts seems a bit of an intriguing enigma in other ways.

I'm ignorant of the details of RFC/RAF training, yet Shorthorns in 1918 seems very backward, if Smith-Barry had 'done his thing' by then. I''d the unvoiced assumption training would be on Avros at least, in most TS.

It looks as if his training C.O. (can't really tell from the handwriting) recommended him for Camels but the Medical Board advice was for Bomber/Reconnaissance. That's something of a contrast.

Anyway, the above speculations are me displaying my ignorance but I feel there's more to him than meets the eye.

Bloody good acquisition, I hope you find out more about him.

Oh that I was back in the dear old PBI.
With no more Triplanes on me tail, nor tracer tracing by.
And no more flames and clickerty-clack and no more blooming sky,
And only a couple of feet to fall whenever I want to die.

Thanks Dej, I am enjoying this new acquisition immensely. And I love indulging in the research too. :-)

I was surprised also by the fact that the Shorthorn was still being used as a primary trainer in 1918.

I imagine the contrast between what his training C.O. recommended and what the Medical Board recommended can be attributed to what H.Q. felt they were in need of at the front at the time. I've a hunch if the Brass Hats said they wanted B/R pilots the Medical Board fell in line and recommended candidates for just that.

After a lengthy period of study of the various available documents I have pieced together the following timeline for the enigma that is our Mister Eberts. Enjoy!

1 April 1916: Eberts resigns his job as sporting editor for the Fort William Times-Journal, (Ontario), and joins the 96th Lake Superior Regiment as a Lieutenant.

23 May 1916: Transfers, as a Lieutenant, to the 141st Battalion C.E.F. (which had been actively recruiting in Fort William at that time).

20 April 1917: Fills out Attestation Paper, re-enlisting in the 141st as a Private, after relinquishing his commission, (apparently the British Army was in need of men from Canada, not officers, and Eberts was tired of waiting to get into the fight).

29 April 1917: Embarks on the S.S. Olympic from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is promoted to Sergeant for the crossing.

3 May 1917: Disembarks at Liverpool and is sent to the training depot at Dibgate.

7 May 1917: The 141st Battalion C.E.F. is absorbed into the 18th Reserve Battalion.

17 May 1917: Eberts “reverts to ranks in express of Establishment”, now back to a Private again.

4 October 1917: He is separated from service with the 18th Reserve Battalion and is attached to the Royal Flying Corps.

5 October 1917: Leaves Dibgate.

8 October 1917: Arrives at #1 R.F.C. Cadet Wing, St. Leonards-on-Sea, for O.T.C.

24 January 1918: Commissioned in the R.F.C. as a 2nd Lieutenant, (Temporary). A document from this time lists his military character as “VERY GOOD”.

2 March 1918: Sent to #4 Training Squadron at Northolt for primary flight training.

14 May 1918: Sent to #86 Training Squadron, (also at Northolt at this time), for advanced flight training.

26 August 1918: Receives pilot certificate from the British board of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

Late summer/early fall of 1918: Assigned to 32 Squadron in Arras AO, flying SE5a.

After Armistice: Assigned to Pool Pilots Range, Setques, France.

6 March 1919: Approved for repatriation.

March or April 1919: Arrives at R.A.F. Repatriation Camp at Blandford, Dorset.

9 May 1919: Leaves Blandford to return to Canada.

1 November 1921: Commissioned by King George V as a Lieutenant in the 96th Lake Superior Regiment with commission made retroactive to 30 May 1916.

hee, hee, hee - yup. Raine, I rather imagine Eberts was sitting in the pilot's pool at St. Omer after he'd earned his wings and was sent out when the 32 Squadron C.O. called for the umpteenth time saying, "I'm still short a bloody pilot so send me one, anyone!"

I suppose, if we're being fair, the Camel by mid-to-late 1918 had been relegated in large part to ground attack service, bombing and strafing trenches and such, which could classify it as a B/R kite - but that's a stretch. Moot point anyway as Eberts ended up flying the SE5a. The again, you can fit bombs to one of those as well, sooooo...

Fullofit, clever. Did you happen to change a few 'F's to 'A's on your report cards as a child? Just asking.

Lou, F’s are so easy to change to A’s. I mean, I was an A student for sure.
