Ok, with new update (4.17 UE version) things just aren't what they seem. Now, I know "how to aim/shoot" with a rifle or a gun, BUT using 300rnds on a target is just a little ridiculous. I am using the SPAD XIII and I used the sight on the right gun, I've used the split in glass, using the middle bolt to line up the target, I've tried at 100yrds, 75yrds, 50yrds and 25yrds and the best result I got was 328 rounds fired 24 hits. I've scoured the internet and YouTube but I haven't found anything to correct the problem. Any suggestions??

GM, why not use the gunsight view instead, so that you can actually see what you're shooting at? The default cockpit view is terrible. I must admit, I've been playing WOFF for a few years and I'm ashamed to say I've not tried SPAD XIII yet (not that far in the War), but I took one for a spin just now in QC for the first time against 2 D.Va 200 and smoked both with 30 rounds out of 126. I think you just need to practice a little more. Also, what might help is if you turn off the g-induced head movement. Look for Robert's mod on Sandbagger's page. This should help with aiming.

I too have been playing since over flanders fields and this is the 1st time I'v even heard of a "gunsight view"???That's about my average, 40 hits out of 120 shots. per I've been all over the key guide looking for it??? there's a button that I can see the gauges of my enemy, but no gun sight view.........just kidd'n......

Glad to be of help. Don't forget, all planes have this view, some even two!

Although saying all that sometimes 300 or 500 rounds were needed, or sometimes just 5.. that's how it goes.

If I remember correctly I believe MvR took around 300 or so to take down Hawker.

F6 is a little bit of a cheat as in real life your head would be moving somewhat with the forces (hence the head move in the sim normally).

Not everyone is a deadly marksman of course.

I've never used the F6 key myself, especially since the g-force head movements were added, because I personally think it adds to the challenge. Depending on the angle, I sometimes lean out the side of the cockpit to see where my rounds are landing (or not). But that's merely personal preference. If the key is there, by all means use it.

That said, I doubt I could shoot anything down while in a Spad. The field of view is so narrow that I feel my reaction speed is not fast enough to fire only when I am nearly certain to hit. Instead I would be guessing too much when the EA is about to come into view and fire "prayer" shots, wasting a lot of ammo. Hats off to Fullofit to be such a fine marksman!

Yes that's it thanks Shredward, my brain is too fried to remember anything these days smile
900. The fact you can also take one out with a handful of bullets sometimes says we have it right, sometimes you do not hit anything vital.

WOW!! 900+ shots in a dog fight, that must have been a sight to behold!! MvR shooting a plane that is ducking and dodging his NEARLY every shot. Then to have his "last" round before his guns jammed placed in the back of his targets head. Damn, luck and skill were both on his side that day.

F6 view feels like a cheat to me. I prefer to play as real as I can, and a real pilot had to move his head to line up the gun. Cockpit view and TrackIR only for this guy ... and yeah, my hit percentage is usually in the 20% range.

I think there are two keys.

First, get close! Really close. So close you can't miss. Boelcke said that. So did Hartman and Rall.

Second, practice/experience. I had stopped flying for about two years. When I started back up a few months ago, I was hitting the target in single digits. My deflection shooting was a waste of bullets. But now, a few months later, I'm hitting the target about 20% and my deflection shooting is much improved. It's like anything else, the more you do it the better you get.

PS: I also started using the smoke trail tracer mod. That's been a big help, too, for distance shooting.

Every plane has a different spot where the bullets go. Whenever I get a new plane, I fly around in QM and do a number of things.

1) Try to figure out what my max power dive speed is? At what speed do you get a warning? Damage? Wings ripping off?
2) How fast do I have to be going to loop?
3) How much alt do I lose in hard turns?
4) Will the plane do a snap roll, and if it will at what speed?
5) I'll also place the machine on auto pilot to get it on the straight and level and fire the guns to see where the bullets seem to be headed, with reference to my forward view. For example, I'm currently flying a DH 2, and the bullets seem to head out above the gun sight at about the level of the two brackets that hold the windscreen. After a while, you don't need to switch to the gunsight view.

Get really close before pulling the trigger! It works like a charm and you will only need a few rounds. Don't try this with two-holers or they will only need a few rounds!

if people insist on only using the cockpit view or TrackIR then I think the trade off in hit percentages is compensated for by greater situational awareness.

I don't have TrackIR so I use F6 all the time.

F6 is a trade off... and I only use it if I'm confident that I'm not going to be attacked. you get better accuracy with your machine gun but you have far less situational awareness. I've also found that it's better to use the F6 gunsight at very long ranges or very close ranges. at mid range (where you're most likely to be tangling with multiple adversaries) it restricts your field of vision a bit too much

so I can use F6 to press my attacks from very close range and there have been sorties where I got as high as 60% accuracy. (attacking only when you're 120 to 20 yards away doesn't hurt either)

20% hit rate is actually considered above average in the real world. I think part of the problem is that a lot of other flight sims have virtually no bullet dispersal or scatter. so every bullet winds up right on target. this bullet scatter seems to have more of an impact on the player than on the AI... but even the AI has a fair amount of wasted bullets. look at how your AI wingmen do and compare. it's not all bad. it means that the AI is having more difficulty killing the player as well.
