With modern satellite monitoring technology it would be impossible to stage a major surprise attack like that again.

RIP to the civilians and military personnel who died on that day.

A modern surprise attack would begin digitally/electronically, followed by by actual physical means of attack which due to the earlier electronic attack may not be detected or if detected may not be effectively countered.

Always be vigilant, that is the lesson of Pearl Harbor paid for by the lives of 2403 Americans.

I'm going to guess that somewhere, today, "Tora, Tora, Tora," will be playing on T.V.

Do not say "impossible", somebody may take it as a challenge....

It will be forgotten. Trafalgar Day is now largely unknown in Britain.

And make things go BANG! what's not to like?

I sold the idea of Guy Fawkes night to my wife saying it was our national burn a catholic day* biggrin

This year has been the first year we have both been in Scotland on the 5th of November, it was so cold wet and miserable that there were very few fireworks going off frown

*just as an aside, my wife is catholic and I'm church of Scotland (non practicing)

These United States of America
Thank you to that Greatest Generation, those gone and those still with us. Rest in peace to those who had their lives taken that day and to those who would go on to also give up their lives for home, family and country. Thank you to those who served and made it home. Thank you Heavenly Father for these special men and women. Thank you rwatson for creating this thread. We will not forget and we'll do our best to help others not either.

I don't want this to go PWEC but you know I was referring to nations starting what we would call a "conventional" war. Terror organizations are a different animal.

Actually I wonder just how "safe" we all are from a surprise attack by a nation state. Just how many ships dock in our ports without search for nuclear weapons? How many foreign nationals pass through our immigration ports without examination for weaponised smallpox, say? Granted that we are all pretty well secured against a mass missile attack a la "Threads", but there are lots of windows still open for enemies to exploit.

This is a theoretical question only and not meant to drift into PWEC territory.

What really worries me is the decreasing time to reaction to an attack. Soon supersonic cruise missiles can be deployed. They should be banned.

there are forces working against our government from within and developing weapons to take out our military satellites as a first strike - its ok to feel safe just don't get too comfortable
