I don't know why I've waited this long to really dig into Genesis, I was always a fan of some of the sappier Phil Collins stuff, both with Genesis and solo.

If you really want to get deep into Genesis you need to check out their early albums with Peter Gabriel. Stuff like "Nursery Cryme", "Selling England by the Pound" and "Foxtrot" all have some great tracks.
Looking back on my life, I had no clue who Genesis was until their "Invisible Touch" album came out in 1986 and thus when they became a big mainstream hit in the US.

That Land of Confusion video, I remember it, good stuff.
EDIT: Oh man, I'd forgotten that's also the guitarist from Mike and the Mechanics.

Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins all had very successful side projects outside of Genesis.

Here's another great intro to Gabriel era Genesis (after he left, though) - a medley with lots of great instrumental sections, especially about half way in when Phil gets on the drums!

I find it really fascinating how so many of the 70's progressive rock bands acquired a more mainstream rock sound as they entered the 80's and 90's. Rush, Genesis and Yes all did this.

Huge Genesis fan here, this one is my all time favorite.
Wind and Wuthering as well as Trick of the Tail are two post-Gabriel albums that still have a strongly progressive feel. The next album, after Steve Hackett leaves the band (And Then There Were Three) is the beginning of their move towards a more pop-rock style. Good stuff, but you can hear the difference from the earlier stuff.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein

Rush and Genesis definitely changed, though I liked much of what Rush put out until “Test For Echo” came along.
I was never much of an early Genesis fan, maybe because the first album of that era I tried listening to was “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.” Maybe Peter Gabriel was just too out there for me LOL.
Later Yes (from 1999’s “The Ladder” on) was a big return to their 70s prog roots.

^ Looks just like my wife's car in high school, had a smooth running V8 (350?) and seemed awesome at the time, especially since I didn't have a car yet.

In the mid to late 80's Gabriel's music did become more mainstream compared to his 70's era stuff.

I have to say that the only Genesis album I did not like at all was their last one "Calling All Stations".
I had my severe doubts even before I listened to it since Phil had already left the band but I wanted to at least give the album a chance. My doubts were confirmed afterwards!

Didn't care for it at all. In interviews Phil credits Tony Banks with being most responsible for what he (Phil) considers the Genesis sound and that it is ironic that Tony is the member with the least solo success. I guess Tony's style needs some kind of catalyst to give it real musical life, at least the way I hear it.

I know Tony Banks made a couple of solo albums but apparently they went nowhere on the charts.
