I'm trying to decide between BoS and BoM. The only thing guiding my decision set this point is that I think is be more likely to fly the 110 vs the 111.

Aside from the plane set and map you fly over, are there any other differences between the two titles? Different mission type/focus in campaigns? Does the combat play out differently in either one due the different maps?

Most people will probably say get BoS first, mainly for the planeset. I got BoM first, then bought BoS anyway! There is a sale on currently if you were unaware, about 50% off both titles!

There are no differences other than the terrain, planes and missions. In fact the terrain is shared. The game installs to a single BoS folder which all content being added to one game system. The terrains are free content that you can fly no matter which version of the game you have. The planes and missions though are what you are really buying.

If you plan to play online I'd go with BoS. BoS is mid war with a variety of planes. BoM is early war planes which dont get used a lot online. But really it is just preference.

Buy them all or if cash is tight, get the ones on sale. Whatever you do, do not buy an Oculus Rift. I’ve not played any non VR flight simulators since I got my Rift last year. Il2 CloD, RoF and the good old original Il2 that has been on my computer since it came out, have been gathering dust. It’s not as sharp as on a regular monitor but once you “step” into the cockpit, there’s no going back. Expect to get surprised from behind because there’s no owl neck craning as with the TrackIR. Luckely for me ROF is going to get overhauled for VR and The new IL2 BoS series is slowely getting as expansive as the Original IL2. You have warned.😬

I dont think you get any new mission types. All versions of the game use the game mission editor. Its just prebuilt campaign missions that differ.

Thanks all. I picked up BoS. I'm generally not that interested in eastern front stuff, so this will hold me over just fine until BoBP comes out.

The terrains are free content online. EG You dont need BoM to fly on the Moscow map online. However if you are a single player... player, you wont be able to use the Moscow map if you dont own BoM.
With the sales going on now theres no reason not to buy them all. With kuban almost finished its worth buying that too as the map is really impressive plus you get a spitfire.
Theres also a new campaign system due fot release in December, new effects, better render distances. The future loiks good.

DCS Kickstarter
Wags July 2014 "In this July 2014 update, the primary news is in regards to the restructured backer rewards. After a careful review of the older system under RRG, we found it financially unattainable."
Wags October 2017 "the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog."
