Homeless Marine spent his last $20 to keep her safe. She’s raised $186,000+ to repay him

https://www.gofundme.com/hvv4r-paying-it-forward

Quote
Kate McClure didn’t expect to run out of gas on her drive to Philadelphia last month.

And she definitely didn’t expect that her misfortune would give her the opportunity to change someone else’s life.

Pulled over on the side of I-95, McClure, 27, was approached by a homeless man named Johnny. She was apprehensive at first, but Johnny told her to get back into her car and to lock the doors while he walked to get her help. He went to a nearby gas station, used his last $20 fill a can and brought it back to fill up her car.

Grateful, but without a dollar to repay him, McClure promised she would come back with something.

A very good story. It's sad that this man ended up homeless. Maybe this will get him on his feet again.

You do not want to run out of gas on I-95 in Philly (I drove that route for a few years). That guy knew it, and decided to help a complete stranger. Very cool story.

The total is now $328,000.

Question, if you were the homeless guy in this story what would you do with the money?

Buy a modest home. Clean up, get some decent clothes, get a job, and use this opportunity to get my life back on track.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

The truth though is probably more likely he will drink most of it away and squander the rest and be back on the street in a year. A lot of homeless people are homeless because they cant keep their life together no matter what. Some even prefer it because if they dont have the money or anything to pawn then they remain clean longer. Depression and addiction are two horrible things and even worth when combined.

I am concerned for his safety now that he has all that money. He has to remove himself from the environment of drugs and booze and the people associated with it. Although I think the money is a good thing, he has hard work ahead of him. I hope he can find some good programs for that and noboady tries scam him out of the money.

Maybe I'm not trusting enough, but if the gas station was near by, why would you buy $20 of gas? Get a gallon, maybe two, that would get her there.
Just sounds a little fishy to me, but I'm not always right.

Don't gas stations ask for a deposit for the fuel container?

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Like many of these stories, there is probably something off here. You wouldn't buy $20 worth gas since that won't fit in a five gallon can and anything larger would be extremely unusual. Five gallons of gas weighs over 30 lbs, which is a lot to carry in one hand for a distance.

Don't take the "spent his last $20" too literally. Maybe he only spent $12 of his last $20, that doesn't lessen the generosity of his action.

As for what he should do, what I would do, with the money is give half of it to the lady who started the go fund me campaign.

Quite possible that he did that, and it also could have cost him the whole $20 for a gallon and security deposit on the gas can. Unfortunately, I am very cynical about these sort of stories but I do prefer to be wrong.

As for the money. There are many good possibilities and your suggestion is a good one. I just hope that, that however it turns out, it ends up being a positive for both of them.

Giving half to her would be the worst thing to happen. People who donated did so for him.

They also did so because of her. In any case it will be his money and he will be free to do with it as he pleases, including giving to the woman who made it possible.

Pretty sad and upsetting stuff for sure.

This is just another reminder that not all is as it seems on the surface. You usually have to dig deeper.
