I'm thinking of grabbing BoS or BoM next time there's a sale so I can get up to speed while I wait for the new Bodenplatte title.

Any advantages to buying through steam or straight from 1C? Or doesn't really matter?

I don't think it matters for this title but personally I stay clear of Steam whenever there's an option to do so.

Unlike DCS where Steam refuse to touch pre-release-alpha-beta-you-name-it making modules show up way later.
Not sure if that's a bad thing though after a year losing hours with Viggen in editor realising things do not work as intended yet.

I am far from a 1CGS fan (per internet style I'm probably labeled as hater) but one has go give them that they do pretty solid releases nowadays.

Since local STEAM give me small price advantage I opt for migrate my BoS for then when allowed.

Other than this no vantage/disadvantage, only a little inconvenient for locate games files for do manual edit/tweaks, buried in STEAM folder guts.

Dont get the steam version. The two games are mostly the same and can be played together and etc but... because of the way steam works you 1) have to buy the base game BoS first. 2) you cant preorder anything which means you will pay full price on release instead of the 10 dollar discount and 3) you also cant play with the planes as they are released. You have to wait for the full steam release before you can fly the planes.

If you buy from their webstore you generally can get it a bit cheaper (they run sales more often than steam does) and you dont have to buy the base game. Each of the games is stand alone and can be combined. So if you just wanted Kuban and BP you could skip BoS and BoM. (though I'd get BoS as it has most of the planes that get flown online). Also if there is a preorder (Like with BP) you will be able to fly any of the planes you preordered as soon as they are flyable. The planes normally arrive in game long before the game is released. If you buy the steam version you wont fly them until release. I think the terrain is flyable even on the steam version before release because of the way they do MP means every copy of the game gets all of the terrains.

Thanks guys. I prefer to avoid steam unless there's an advantage. So it sounds like I'll look for a sale and buy through 1C.

Looks like BoS is 50% off now. Good timing!

A plus point for Steam is that you can make a back-up. Even better I have all my Steam games on a second disk so even if I reinstall the O/S I just re-install Steam and it finds all the games I had installed with no downloading.

I'm tempted by 50% off BoM.

You should be able to move and/or back up a non-Steam BoX install too.

I just pre-ordered Bodenplatte and noticed that if you want to purchase through Steam, you must buy BoM first. But since I bought it directly from 1CGS, I didn't have to. Why is that?

I suspect the issue is more to do with the Steam pricing model than anything else: it assumes that there is a 'core application' plus DLC, and can't really handle the way BoX does 'buy what you want to use only'. And as the Oden notes, Steam also won't permit beta DLC, which would make it rather difficult for the BoX developers to put anything out for testing without having to support parallel installs and servers. Personally, I can't see any great reason to use Steam for BoX: the developers own installer handles updates well enough.
