Seeing the Prince tribute tomorrow evening and I'm getting a little jazzed about it, the nostalgia thing again with "Purple Rain" (wonderful evening seeing the movie in a theater last year). It's just that I cannot find a single bit of info on this tribute band, except that I know they're not the same LoveSexy that was popular in New England some years back (with a critically acclaimed female guitarist). Also odd that the tickets are only $10.00 (vs. the usual $13.00/$15.00, up to $35.00 for larger seated venues). I'm putting my faith in L'auberge Casino, that they wouldn't book a crappy act, but if there was a chance I can finally give a poor (or at least a mediocre) review, this should be it. We'll see.

I'm no hardcore Prince fan, other than “Purple Rain” and a few songs from “1999”. I have those CDs and I just purchased from Amazon the three hits that I know of which are not on those albums.

I Wanna Be Your Lover (forgot this one from 1979)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp8WL621uGM

Raspberry Beret
Kiss

The rest of what I want to hear tomorrow night...

Let's Go Crazy
Take Me With U
The Beautiful Ones
When Doves Cry
I Would Die 4 U
Purple Rain

...and if they want to play the rest of “Purple Rain” (Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, Baby I'm a Star), that's ok with me, but I'm sure we'll hear the hits.

From "1999"...

1999
Little Red Corvette
Delirious
Let's Pretend We're Married
D.M.S.R.
Free

I also wouldn't mind if they throw in a couple of songs from Morris Day and The Time (doubtful).

I won't be taking pics, wife's work phone (iPhone 4s) crapped out yesterday and a newer 7 won't arrive until next week. This music is really more my wife's speed than mine (oh man, that last 5-hour show rocked so hard!) but it's all good, as long as this tribute does justice to Prince's music and that these covers have the same effect on women as the real songs did so many years ago. wink We'll see.

Friday night's Prince tribute show didn't go as I had hoped...

On the drive to the casino, I noticed that I wasn't feeling so well. I wasn't fevery or nauseous, just a little stopped up and with a slight headache, hoping that the 3-shot Screwdriver I was bringing with me would make me feel better. It did, but once I got home I immediately crashed and I've been in bed all weekend with a head cold (feeling better now, though).

I thought the band was really pretty good, better than what I had expected. The lead guy looked, moved and sounded enough like Prince (other than handing the more complex solos over to the lead guitarist), and they even played the songs I was hoping for (even some Morris Day, the Asian chick held the mirror, taking the place of Jerome). Should have been a great time, except for my not feeling well and one other issue...

The problem was the raunchy stage show. I could tell after a while that my wife wasn't digging it at all. I'm not ragging on her conservative nature, one of the reasons I was so attracted in the first place, and we occasionally enjoy a little weird and racy entertainment (“Rocky Horror” is probably the limit, though). This show went over the line, I guess. And that's a shame because otherwise, it was an excellent musical performance.

Anyway, the last straw for me was "Purple Rain" (near the end of the show, but not the last song). We had walked to the back of the auditorium to sit in the portable bleacher seats, mainly to get away from the dense crowds as I could now tell that I was coming down with something, but also because my wife was more than done with the stage show at this point. Man, I thought the little Asian chick was cute as hell (she came out about 5 songs in for the duet of “U Got the Look”, also played keys when the keyboardist played sax). But the things she acted out on stage with her male band members, would never happen in real life...no way those guys were straight, confirmed during “Purple Rain” when 'Prince' sucked face with his guitar tech after handing him a new guitar. I asked my wife, “You ready to roll?” “Whenever you are.” So we bolted.

Reminded her on the drive home (in a humorous way), “Remember, it was *you* who dragged *me* to Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras one year, that debauchery was your idea.” Her response, “You never heard me say I wanted to go back, did you?” Lol. biggrin True dat. We still would have had a fantastic rest of the evening if I wasn't feeling so rotten. Oh well, at least she made me a delicious homemade soup yesterday.

Next up, The Fixx! band

Wife's phone started working again, it can keep a charge for about an hour of being turned on, so I got some pics (leaving out the racier stuff, I wouldn't want to get into any trouble)...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...the place where we get shrimp fajitas before these shows, boarded up and closed down! Bad start for the evening. frown

Coming soon in its place, "The Fajita Factory". Never heard of it. Hope it's good and has the same people working there.

Well, it's somewhat of a cover, and in a way all covers are tributes. Here's something I just found.

Today I purchased Led Zeppelin's "Mothership" (2015 - remastered by Jimmy Page) from Walmart, also Metallica's 'Black Album' because it was only $5.00 and I have a compulsion to purchase just one more CD before they disappear (already have it on tape and MP3)...

I've wanted "Mothership" (Greatest Hits - double CD) ever since seeing this pic...

I recently discovered this band from Brazil called Fleesh that decided to do an album of Rush covers, and a lot of them you wouldn't expect. I think they did a really great job in their experiment.

They did a 14 song record, I believe. Check out their youtube channel.

Here's their cover of the last song on the last record Rush put out called 'The Garden'.

I took this new Rush tribute album to the treadmill, my first impression is that it's pretty good. I'm not so crazy about covers of popular classics like Limelight, The Trees and Closer to the Heart. Maybe they'll grow on me.

The rest though... thumbsup

They included several of my lesser known favorites like Nobody's Hero, Losing It and Tears. The sound of Rush with a sexy voice. biggrin Here Again was a nice surprise, wish Heart would have covered this one in their heyday.

Another very good one, IMO...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRTZls4q4GE

Guess I wish they would have stuck with softer Rush (I could make a list) and leave the harder stuff to the original 'boys'. But that's ok, there's enough here to enjoy (and no Tom Sawyer). smile

We saw the LSU Symphony this evening at the Student Union Theater. When the performance kicked off with a celebration of the Russian October Revolution, I knew we were in for a treat! smile I'm trying to find that piece of music before I forget it, I know I've heard it before but I can't find it.

We went with the $10.00 cheap seats and it still sounded fantastic, the latest renovations (including acoustical improvements) are very nice. I recommend to anyone who lives in or near a college town, for a classy evening that won't hurt the pocketbook, check out the student symphony/orchestra. I'm sure discerning connoisseurs of Classical music can tell the difference between college students and professional musicians, but I can't...it sounded fantastic to me. smile

The ballet OTOH, I can tell the difference between local and professional performers. Both are enjoyable, but I don't mind paying a little more when the Russians come to town.

A couple of pics of tonight's performance...

We go see the Detroit Symphony when they play an out door concert at Henry Ford Greenfield Village Museum. Very affordable night. I don't know much at all about classical music, but it is always a great night under the stars.

Sounds very cool. We saw the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra under the stars last April, after eating dinner on a blanket. It was a lot of fun (luckily the weather was perfect), but that was part of a Beatles tribute. I'd like to see just them outdoors.

We plan to see the New York Philharmonic in April for free by going to an open rehearsal, don't even have to dress up for it. smile

Yacht rock? WTF is that?! confused Lol.

==========
Yacht rock - Wikipedia

Yacht rock (originally known as the West Coast Sound or adult-oriented rock) is a broad music style and aesthetic identified with soft rock. Yacht rock was one of the commercially successful genres of its era, existing between the late 1970s and early 1980s. Drawing on sources such as smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, funk, and disco, common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on light, catchy melodies. Initially used pejoratively, its name was derived from its association with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of sailing.
==========

I'd never even heard of the term "yacht rock" until recently. I've been yacht rocking all day in preparation for my first yacht rock cover band concert tomorrow evening...groovy. biggrin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlOtO2ZimrE

Here's the bulk of Yacht Rock Revue's potential setlist (from their website) that I've been listening to (oops, forgot Al Stewart's "Time Passages" and "Year of the Cat"...adding now)...

[Linked Image]

Oh yeah, I see potential in a lot of these tunes. wink

So...here's my take on Yacht Rock Revue and yacht rock in general, in as few words as possible... smile

The band was excellent, even with covering the female vocals in "Afternoon Delight". A very groovy evening indeed. But as much as we enjoyed the performance and song selection, it wasn't very, I dunno...charged? I'll try to explain what I mean the best way I can...

I was thinking this could be the ultimate date night show, cool songs about 'making love on a sandy island' (Jay Ferguson), being 'kissed all over' (Exile) and 'afternoon banging' (Starland Vocal Band), how can it not be? biggrin

First off, although we remember these songs growing up, we have no common nostalgia with them. Music can be an awesome aphrodisiac, especially with a live performance, and I've felt it many times standing in front of that stage. But I think it's mostly just me being nostalgic, enjoying the moment while flooding my mind with fond memories. Nostalgia can be powerful, even with non-'love songs'. There was very little shared nostalgia here.

Secondly, yacht rock is typically not very...edgy, either musically or lyrically. For example, you can take a love song with the sappiest lyrics and make it feel edgy by the music, like April Wine's "Just Between You And Me" and even Bryan Adams' "Heaven". Or, more commonly, give a love song some bite by making it lyrically not so good-feeling by adding a touch of jealousy or uncertainty, like REO Speedwagon's "Take It On The Run" and "Keep On Loving You", or Heart's “Alone”. Or make it darker like Def Leppard's "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and Skid Row's "I Remember You", even Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". You know, a typical 80's power ballad. smile

IMO, these songs evoke passion in the listener (unless you hate that type of music). Typical yacht rock to me is just too...comfortable (and sometimes whiny, "Baby Come Back"), and being too comfortable can easily lead to complacency, the killer of passion. As I mentioned on my first post in this thread, Fleetwood Mac's music has a cool sexual vibe to it and I think I know why, it's the turmoil (the opposite of Paul Davis' “Sweet Life”). Not so much the sappier "You Make Loving Fun" (still a good song), but rather "Dreams" ("Thunder only happens when it's raining...") and "Go Your Own Way".

If none of that made sense, it's because I'm not a psychiatrist. biggrin

Anyway, the show was still fun and we'll do it again when they come back around...

EDIT: I forgot to mention, these guys KILLED Jefferson Starship's "Jane", one of the few heavy hitters of the evening (also Toto's "Rosanna" and Steely Dan's "My Old School"). They really are excellent musicians.
