I’ve probably purchased 15 to 20 vinyl albums, 2 cds (because Def Leppard doesn’t sell their original recordings on iTunes), and 5-10 digital albums. I’m a music nut, though, and have played guitar for nearly 20 years. One of my favorite things to do is to buy and listen to new music. I bought a ton of old tunes by Al Jolson, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Sinatra, Andrews Sisters, and some bluesy singers like Billie Holliday. I put them all in a playlist titled “Tokyo Rose” and listen to it while hunting Japanese shipping in SH4. Great fun and good tunes. Kind of throws people for a loop that I listen to such a wide range of music. Pretty much the only style I don’t care for is hip hop. Not too many people my age swingin’ “8 to the bar,” lol.

I'm pretty sure the last thing I got on vinyl was the soundtrack for Return of the Jedi back in 1983!

I still have some vinyl LP's I bought in the late 60's. All classical stuff. I thought they might be worth some money but after checking on e-Bay they are not worth much at all. I'll hang on to them even though I have nothing to play them on.

There were two new releases by Deep Purple and Danzig this year. And my inner completionist put a big hole in my wallet by ordering some missing stuff by Jon Lord, Samhain and Kory Clarke (Warrior Soul).

Haha, this. I was into Laibach, Einsturzende Neubauten, Front 242, Borghesia, Prodigy, New Order, Happy Mondays, Belle and Sebastian. What was touted as "alternative" in the 90s certainly was not.

Of course, then around 1995 we had the Brit-Pop explosion here, which generated some pretty decent bands. You can just listen to the Trainspotting soundtrack for most of them wink

Thanks LB4LB, I had forgotten about Nitzer Ebb, but never owned any of their stuff. I did have a couple of Young Gods CDs though...

Pretty cool. Takes me back to my younger days.. I remember when the hard core stuff of Skinny Puppy, KMFDF, and Ministry was considered "alternative".

I have many playlists on youtubes. One of them is 800 songs long, new songs, coming out every day...

Retrowave is awesome.

The bands mentioned on recent posts, I've never heard of. To me, 90's Alternative is what's in my collection: R.E.M., Matchbox 20, Collective Soul, Creed and especially Live. Guess I've never strayed much past mainstream.

Well, there's "Industrial" and there's "Alternative". Several of the bands mentioned by U-96 would fall under the "Industrial" category IMHO. smile

Wow, Matchbox 20, Creed and Collective Soul. All of those bands disappeared into the wind.

That's because most 90s music sucked. 60s, 70s and 80s FTW!

U96 and L4B4,

omg, yes, there was "alternative" but that is only what people THOUGHT was alternative just because it was a new movement of things that were "not pop" or played on the radio otherwise. But even during that time there were REAL alternative things, such as industrial, that didn't see airplay at all but were huge amongst those in the know. I love that you guys cited some of them. Nitzer Ebb was my first fave industrial band when I first heard "Join in the Chant" in 1987. Of course "industrial" itself was a misnomer as none of these bands were "industrial" in the sense that the term implied except if you were Einsturzende Neubauten or even Throbbing Gristle (whose Genesis P-Orridge is credited for coining the term).

I never got too much into Laibach, though they did amuse me as being "painfully Eastern European." I heard that recently they played North Korea, and that their lead singer was so proud that Kim Jung Un loved them, haha. Young Gods were great, I saw them in concert once, and I love that they were a WAXTRAX! band. Of course being from Chicago and growing up during that era WAXTRAX! is my favorite record label and their influence continues on today. Other bands from that label such as Front 242 (one of my all-time faves) continue to rock on even today. My wife and I saw them play only last month, and even though they are in their 50s now, they still stomp around like they are in their 20s. Richard 23 is coming back next month to play here as part of the Revolting Cocks (ugly chickens to appease the censors) along with Frontline Assembly and this show is also sold out. Last weekend I saw My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult play a sold out show. It's amazing to me that these bands have been around for so long, receive little to no airplay, and yet can sell out shows even 30 years later.

BTW since I'm sure you guys are familiar with WAXTRAX! there is a documentary that is on the verge of being released about the label. In March I previewed the rough cut in its entirety and it was great. Whenit's released you should check it out:

WAXTRAX! Movie Website

If you want to see the trailer do a search for "Industrial Accident" on Vimeo (I removed the link since it contains adult language).

Sorry, but your guys' posts struck a nerve with me!

v6,
boNes

It seems there were many types of "alternative" to choose from. Bands like the Smiths, The Cure, New Order, R.E.M., Depeche Mode were alternative at first, them became more mainstream. All great bands. You also had the more punk stuff, the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, on so on. Then the "industrial" stuff that made Nine in Nails more popular. You even had stuff like The Cramps. Then there was the grunge stuff. The music of the 1980' and 90's had so much to choose from.

Brings back many memories of just blasting out the speakers in my car and having people look over at me as if I were crazy.

LB4LB touched on it but I do find it interesting though how so many bands started off as either "alternative" or "progressive" and then eventually adopted a more mainstream sound as time went on. Just to name a few: Genesis, Rush, Yes, etc.

spot on bones. UK "alternative" was mostly jangly guitar indie bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, Smiths, Happy Mondays and the Charlatans. Some were punky/gothic, while others veered into funk/dance and went mainstream.

Funny you should mention Waxtrax as a major influence in the US. The UK alternative scene was dominated by Mute, Rough Trade, Factory and Beggars Banquet which all appeared around the same time: 1978-80.
