I came home to see my two daughters, 10 and 6 (their ages, not their names ), watching the classic and awesome Christmas movie, Elf. While I thought it a little early in the year to be watching such things, I was glad that they were watching something genuinely inventive and funny rather than some rubbish dubbed animated thing. I asked my eldest daughter if she liked it, to which she responded, "It's brilliant and really funny". Then she hesitated - and in a lowered voice so her younger sister wouldn't hear - "But it's got swearing in it!" I fretted for a second, thinking that something had slipped the parental censor and I had exposed my innocent children to depravity, and tentatively asked "What swearing?" "The "C" word!" And my world froze. The image of my wife cutting off my head slowly - and forever - ran through my mind. "Whisper in my ear what word that was..." And she came close, full of subterfuge and mischievousness, and said with a lot of seriousness... "Crappy!" ...and B R E A T H E....

Thanks for sharing that wonderful story U-96!
I had totally forgotten until rather recently that Peter Dinklage was in the movie. I really had no clue who he was until I started watching Game of Thrones.

When video tapes were still a thing there was a accident where one of the major studios put out a kids film that had been mistakenly recorded with porn instead of the cartoon that was supposed to be. I see something like that happened again.... http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/film/9475627/Cinema-shows-porn-instead-of-Disney-movieKids and their parents in the US expecting to see Disney's latest movie Frozen were accidentally treated to porn. Instead of the feisty princess of the PG-rated Disney feature, the audience in a cinema in Florida saw two minutes of explicit scenes. The projectionist apparently mixed up a fill-in cartoon with the red-band trailer for Lars Von Triers' upcoming film Nymphomaniac, featuring Shia LaBeouf having sex on screen.

I remember when my son turned 11 I wanted him to see the great baseball movie Major League. He hadn't seen it yet as far as I knew and was a big baseball fan.
So I bought the DVD and popped it in the player.
I had forgot, after watching it on TV repeatedly, how much swearing went on in that flick. My wife was, well, somewhat upset that he was watching it.

I managed, somehow, to get my mother to take me to see The Godfather when it came to a local theater. She was not happy but she also did not make us walk out, which, in retrospect, was a miracle.

I rented "Pan's Labyrinth" to show my niece when she was 9 years old. I honestly thought it was a kids movie.
My sister was pretty aghast then she was like, "Oh, yeah, it's my brother...figures."

I came home once to find my 2 young boys (about 6 and 8 at the time) sitting in front of the TV laughing their heads off watching South Park . I go into see my wife, who's in the Kitchen, "Are you letting them watch South Park?" "Yeah, it's just a kids cartoon isn't it ?" "Have you watched it?" "No" I just smiled at her with eyebrows raised and walked away. She turned the TV off a couple of minutes later

Hehe yeah, cartoons catch a lot of parents out, especially now there's a proliferation of adult-oriented ones like South Park, Family Guy, American Dad... Even the Simpsons, Futurama and Ren and Stimpy have some pretty dark stuff in them at times - they just avoided the swearing, drug and sex references seen in the others - but they often aren't appropriate for kids younger than 7 or 8. Having said that, anyone remember Fritz the Cat? I suspect people of my parent's generation made the same mistake with that one

Fritz the Cat? I've not heard of it but I do remember "Felix the Cat". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_the_Cat_(film)
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

While I'm not advocating neglect of parental guidelines, I find the rules somewhat ambiguous and inconsistent, and founded in science only as the exception. Some of the greatest experiences I made as a kid were things that would now made my hair stand on end if I saw my grandkids doing them, and yet, I think these are necessary to an extent. The whole overprotective helicopter parenting style is, I think, rather destructive on keeping a healthy society that is at ease taking mild risks. I'm not talking about the big ones, but seeing parents get arrested these days for "child neglect" just because their kid walked down two blocks into a public park without adult supervision is not just ridiculous, it's downright disturbing.
At the end of the day, a film is just a film. The important part is to be readily available as a parent/adult for comfort, for talk, and to be genuinely interested in the kid's life. For the most part, kids will grow up regardless how much supervision you throw at them. But if you want a kid that can handle situations on its own, you have to let go early on in situations where nothing seriously bad can happen. Hint: Bruises and scratches are no serious injuries.
