I think I've played them all over the years and SH IV would be my favourite mainly because I got fed up of German boats. Every subsim seems to be German boats. As a Brit I want to play British subs.
What I need is a mod giving me T and S-Class subs and a campaign in which to use them. I'll dream on.

I believe I'm making it patriotic. I have no interest in turning anything political. If the mods believe I am then they can delete my post/reprimand me and I will abide by that.

I've never cared for U-Boat sims, always prefer to skipper American boats in the Pacific. Therefore SH4 is my favorite.

I believe I'm making it patriotic. I have no interest in turning anything political. If the mods believe I am then they can delete my post/reprimand me and I will abide by that. Chucky is right and I agree. I would love to have a British sub sim especially a cold war era one. BLiTZKRiEG, I believe you are a new member so I think its just that you don't know everyone here yet. Chucky is being patriotic and practical.(Two things I admire and try to be myself btw ) Most everything is German when it comes to these types of games and many of us who have simmed a long time desire to see something new or rarely used in sims. We get fatigued with the overly used themes. I would still be playing SH3 if I could get my copy to work because I want to play Grey Wolves and I enjoyed SH3 back in the day. I spent hours upon hours following Subsim "how to" threads to a T to try and get it running on Windows 7. One particular sticky's instructions included a link to a file that I supposedly needed and though I checked it, it ended up have a virus which majorly messed with my pc and took several weeks to get recuperated from. That left a bad taste in my mouth plus my old copy has the starforce drm stuff which can be a pain so after that experience I just don't want to try anymore. Perhaps I can try again with a better tutorial but I just don't have the heart to try. Eventually I'll probably just purchase the newer digital copy of SH3 on Subsim so that I can avoid the problems altogether. I really enjoy SH4 as well. I think SH3&4 are the best. I just recently tried reinstalling SH5 with mods and finally got to where that's playable. It really is silly how broken that piece of software is out of the box. I do love being able to walk around the sub compartments and having the newer graphics such as the volumetric clouds but it still seems kind of quirky even with mods.

I have SH3 from Steam and it works fine on my machines running both Windows 7 and 10. If using 10 you will need to run the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7. Both SH3 and 4 are offered from Steam at $9.99 each.

I enjoyed SH III until SH IV came out. Loved SH IV partly because it brought back fond memories of hours spent playing Microprose's Silent Service (C64) back in the '80s lol. Agree with Chucky, would love to see some Royal Navy subs done.

That is the most impressive, comprehensive and frightening installation guide I've ever seen. I don't know whether to commend you or call the police
No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

...because in here the player seems to fight more against warships while in the later (Europe) scenario most of the encounters are by far against merchant shipping (and I prefer to fight against warships). That was never in high numbers, so not really historically accurate - and really something that submarines (anglo-american) and U-Boote (GER) should avoid at any cost. No wonder why... Sure I remember playing GATO/TENCH-classes and sinking Kaibokans, but that fun was nothing compared to what we play nowadays... On top of this I prefer the American subs compared to the German ones (with the exception of the German type XXI which only entered in service at the very end of the war). This sounds as if you have never undergone a lengthy DC-attack and never actually tried the fun to "dance with the escorts", did you? Then you would appreciate the way lower underwater sensor-profile of the Germans. As USAs (which are much rather fleet boats than actual subs) you would be toast right next Hedgehog-attack. Finally in terms of technical features SH4 is also and IMO better than SH3 because it has better graphics (albeit not by much) and specially because it has a much better crew management system. For example while in SH3 you have to micromanage your crewmen in order to for example decide who and when every crewmen will rest or return to duty, in SH4 you don't need to micromanage your crewmen as much since there's shift system (with 3 shifts) which automatically puts the crewmembers of one of the shifts on duty while the remaining 2 shifts are resting and automatically cycles the active shift between the 3 shifts (each shift automatically changes after 8 hours if I'm not mistaken). GFX? Really? I mean: R-E-A-L-L-Y? Crew management: SH3 has one thing that SH4 has unfortunately never seen: S3C - The Silent Hunter III Commander, where you can configure crew-management and far more. Really recommendable! Cheers!
