In a matter of seconds 92,000 people lost their lives. That year in England and Canada there was no summer. It snowed in June and frost was present throughout what was supposed to be the summer months. Global temperatures had plummeted. The following year, 1816, 200,000 people died of disease and starvation.
All of this due to a super volcanic explosion on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. The explosion had sent rocks & ash 28 miles high and 12 cubic miles of magma into the air. The first eruption was loud enough to be heard as thunder by people living over 800 miles away.
The VEI is an index of the force of volcanic activity (Volcanic Explosion Index)
Mount Saint Helens: VEI 5
Mount Tambora (on island of Sumbawa) VEI 7
Besides Yellowstone National Park ...are there other places in the U.S. a super volcanic eruption might occur ?
Long Valley Caldera, California**
La Garita Caldera, Colorado - 27 million yrs ago this one produced one of the largest super volcanic explosions on the planet & deposited 1,200 cubic miles of magma
Valles Caldera, New Mexico
**this one is so dangerous that the U.S. Government created an escape route and named it the "Mammoth Escape Route," though business owners complained that the road would scare away potential customers. The road was renamed the "Mammoth Scenic Loop," though its purpose is to serve as an emergency escape route if the volcano shows signs of imminent activity.
The ground at Yellowstone National Park over the caldera has been rising as much as 2.8" per year. The magma pool is 6 miles below the surface.
The park is monitored continuously for earthquake swarms and elevation changes.
Frankly, the thought that this thing is being monitored by the U.S.Govt on a continuous basis does make me wonder if I'll ever make another another trip there
