So, interesting set of people working and appearing on this show.

Liam Neeson guest starred last week, Charlize Theron this week.

Jonathan Frakes directed tjhis weeks episode, Brannon Braga two weeks ago, last week was by another Trek allumni who directed TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise episodes. The pilot was by Jon Favreau.

The cultural references to 20-21 century are silly and much of the comedy is sophomoric but overall I still enjoy the program.

I know what you mean, but that's the comedy side coming out. The Friends reference was kind of funny though.

Both Liam Neeson and Charlize Theron were in "A Million Ways To Die In The West," so I wonder if Seth McFarland is friends with them or something. Interesting to see who else is participating.

I liked the last episode, and it seemed to have a little less sophomoric jokes, but it also seemed to me like the story ended kind of abruptly, and there were a few loose ends or things not explained well (see in spoiler tags below).

Maybe I missed it, but it looked like the zapping of Isaac was some sort of a plan, but it was never explained, and they never covered if he got back into his body, and if it was still functional. If it was all part of the plan, it seems like Malloy wouldn't have said what he did in sickbay.

Doesn't bode well when an episode missed a broadcast date, especially on fox.

Supposedly they skipped this past Thursday so as to not compete with the Dodgers/Cubs game.

That was a very smart move by Fox. Sci-Fi cannot compete with sports. It will lose every time.

Really great news! The show has hit a stride that works for it. Funny, but basically a good scifi ST show.

He, the sci fi seems hidden or dressed in the admittedly sophomoric humor but it’s pretty good sci-fi nonetheless.
I predict a short lifetime followed by cult fandom.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

I've watched three episodes. It must be me, I guess. It's just NOT making me laugh. I don't think that it's all that funny. I'll watch more...I'm trying to like it. Maybe it'll get better.

It isn’t reallly supposed to be a comedy, it’s classic Star Trek with a looser sense of humor.
Not that you have to like it, it’s certainly different and a new type of show.

Agreed Raw.

I think it's fair to say that that threw off a LOT of people including me was the assumption that "The Orville" was going to be some kind of parody comedy show simply because the show's creator and lead star was the same guy who created Family Guy.

That, and the fact that the ads focused on the humor.

The humor is pretty constant throughout an episode, so it's certainly got more comedy than an average sci-fi show, which I think makes it a little bit of an odd duck, programming-wise. I've found that there will be a fairly significant action that took place, followed immediately by some form of low-brow humor, and it just kind of jars me out of the action. I'm not sure if the action is a setup for a joke, or is actually significant.

I think of it as happening on two levels - the deeper sci-fi story which tends to be pretty intelligent the surface reaction of the cast which tends to consist of one-liners. I also think there is a disconnect between the crew behaving in a less disciplined manner and the more traditional way these types of characters are typically portrayed.
