. You lucky, lucky man OvS, I'd love to walk through that hangar myself. I don't suppose you were allowed into the cockpit of either of those gems, were you? Robert, full story here: Restored Spit P9374 .

[quote=OvStachel]Today was an awesome morning. [quote] hmm, this morning for me started at 4:30 with the dog getting sprayed by a skunk. I'd have preferred your morning, except that it would have required a change of pants. How long have those birds been stored there? wow they are beautiful.

I don't know much about the owner... or the planes. He's very wealthy and needed a private spot to keep them... hence the hush-hush about them. It was amazing to see the Spitfire in person and up close... I'd never actually gotten that close to one other than at RAF Hendon with Sandbagger and Polovski, but we were still not allow to touch it.
I did not sit in it, no way I was going to push the limit like that for my friend. He was given very specific permission... even though it's his hangar the arrangement was that no one be allowed in or around without clearance from the owner's office.
It was very well restored, the guns have been covered over to pass FAA restrictions. Apparently it was shipped over from the UK in a container a few months ago.
No one knows it's where it is, so I thought best to keep it that way... I can only say... It's here... and it's truly a sight for any US war buff to see. We don't get to see the Spitfire, or Bf109 in it's true form. There's a few knock-offs flying around here and there at airshows, but nothing like this one.
It was a real treat and I was extremely thankful for being allowed to see it.
Best,
OvS
PS... I will say this though... the two together reminded me of a gorgeous late 60's Jaguar XKE sitting next to a early 70's Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda

. When I was in the USAF in the mid 1970s I spent three years in England stationed, among other places, at RAF Chicksands. I enjoyed many hours at nearby Biggleswade, Old Warden, and the Shuttleworth collection. And way back then, if one was persuasive enough and respectful enough, one was allowed to sit in the cockpits of many of the aircraft then on display - at least this one was. I think it may have helped that I was usually in uniform when I visited the collection. What I wouldn't give to be again within daily driving distance of such a gathering of historic war birds. .

Brilliant stuff O.V.S,love the spit and cannot wait to fly it in WOTR We're lucky over here in Blighty..we see the spit regular. That engine sound just won't be beaten I also only live a few miles from the Potteries museum where we have a fully built Spit in there ( minus cockpit) There's also the Merlin engine on show, and a lot of history regarding the great Reginald Mitchell. We also have a statue of the great man. The spit is always in the hearts of us potteries folk. http://www.thepotteries.org/photo_wk/046.htm
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

You indeed had a great experience OvSatchel! man, to be that up close and personal with those birds - I've always had a soft spot for the Corsair (made my first virtual combat kill in one in CFS2). And the Spitfire! Oh, to be wealthy! Or at least better fit for retirement... out our way we have the Beaver County Air Heritage Museum. it's pretty neat for such a small place. I don't know how they keep it going. And i don't know why it isn't listed on that page, but the last time I was down there, somebody was building a Spitfire - maybe he's just using their facilities and he's a private owner. This was to be a full size replica, as far as I know from original plans. Maybe someday I'll be able to help out a little. Now you just have to keep close to this guy and maybe, maybe.... maybe someday an even closer look, a chat with the owner, dare we dream a ride? Or are they both the single seat version? I think sometimes they take combat equipment out from behind the single seater's seat to put in a seat for giving rides... i hope for your sake!
