I'm referring specifically to theatrical releases here and not tv or straight to video movies. The three most recent ACW films are "Gettysburg", "Gods & Generals" and "Free State of Jones" and all of them tanked at the box office.

I know someone will mention "Cold Mountain" but that wasn't a war movie but a love/romance story that just happened to take place durIng the ACW. It's similar to "The English Patient" in that respect.

Gettysburg actually did well with $42 million on a $20 million budget and was one of the highest VHS/DVD sellers since Td Turner kept playing it on his TNT channel.

Where do you get that 42 million stat? According to Box Office Mojo, the movie didn't even make 11 million in theaters. Does that 42 million include DVD sales and rentals?

They're not dead, just some more recent ones are propaganda films not worth watching... (Looking at Lincoln, ahem).

If anything, Hollywood has shown us that no movie or kind of movie is off the table to bring back.

In light of the recent wave of such things as removing statues and renaming buildings / highways, etc., I imagine we'll be seeing a movie come along that puts the confederate generals and politicians in the worst possible light. If it manages to sufficiently portray them as monsters, it will be welcomed with open arms by numerous media critics in previews. The box office take may prove to be less enthusiastic...

This exact scenario already happened with "Free State of Jones".
