Is the busted out chunk of the conning tower by design? It looks like it is not and looks like someone took an angle grinder to the edges of a crack to make them Moreno clean. I know zero about this though.

Thoughts?

I don't see a busted out chunk, but I do see she is flying the Jolly Roger and that IS interesting.

I thought that a ship only displayed the Jolly Roger when they had engaged and sunk an enemy combatant?

Siccessful war patrol? Interesting... No broomstick, though.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I thought the broomstick signified firing all your torpedoes and every one hitting its target?

The broomstick is symbolic of "sweeping the enemy from the ocean".

This is what I thought a broomstick meant:

The United States Submarine Service during World War II generally considered a patrol a "clean sweep" if the sub sank every target she engaged.[2] Individual torpedoes might miss, and convoys usually had far too many ships for all to be sunk by a single boat, but these unavoidable inefficiencies did not mar a "clean sweep."

Given the US Navy's recent history, I wonder if it collided with a ship and sank it... (just kidding)

I find it pretty strange that a billion dollar submarine has to have jury rigged railings for lookouts, a jury rigged mast and light with a closed array (the worst kind) Furuno radar to enter it's home port.

That pic is much better, lots of dings, rust, and patches...Ice?

Not so much jurry rigged as being made to disassemble and pass it through a hatch for storage/usage.

Exactly. I went out on a Los Angeles class sub once, and it was almost identically set up.

Yeah, good points gents.

Stealthy sig is the name of the game. My ignorance. Still don't like the sloppy patches but that is probably the sonar absorbent coating stuff...the rust are from nicks or poor application that coating I'd guess.

There's probably a lot of those spots to take care of after each patrol. I bet she looks better going out on patrol! wink

Regarding the Furuno If you want to troll adversaries do you...

a) light em up with your Sun-strength super-classified anti-stealth multi-band radar
b) pretend you're a pleasure cruiser

as for the damage, I'm guessing Arctic ice (or Arleigh Burke class destroyers wink ) tend to do that to the paintwork

Nixer that picture of yours is way easier for these old eyes. It looks like a patch but it's a pretty big dent.

I bet the Jolly Roger is for some covert type stuff. That was how I saw the photo to begin with, as a "why is his flag out" story.

The better pic was happily stolen from a post.....in...gasp...PWEC from..I hope he has power tonite, our own CyBerkut

If it was just paint, and it's not, I would have delayed my entry into port until we looked ship shape, seriously.

Hopefully the crew is quietly celebrating something cool they can never talk about.

yep
