So my cat is at my side pestering me for attention, and when I try and pet her, she swats me away, then pesters me some more. She won't stop! What do I do?

fyi she's got water, food, catbox and everything else a privileged cat could need.

p.s. Remember Doctor Katz? That was a great show. Maybe some other folks have absurd questions, too.

Don't know if the question is serious, but if she doesn't want to get petted, well, she probably has other things on her mind. Like, playing.

Is she confined to living indoors? Alone? In that case she's probably simply bored. Does she know the laserpointer? If not: High time to introduce her to great chases across the apartment.
Use sparingly (once a week, otherwise the novelty wears off too quickly), never let the ray get into her eyes.

Consider a second cat for your household if she's alone for long hours.

Cats need your attention only about an hour or two per day, but you should definitely devote those two hours. It's different of course if she can roam outside.

We have three cats: a tortoisehair(the female one pestering me), a ragdoll(female) and a black cat(male), because black cats are cool. I buried our dog a couple of years ago in our back yard, unfortunately. Anyways, the two women are always beating the crap out of each other when the male goes outside to hunt rabbits(he loves eating them). Only when he returns is order restored to the house after he beats them down to keep them in line. It's fantastic to watch. Peace ensues. I can only imagine how bad it gets when I'm not around, because the male stays outside all day long when I'm at the office. Except today. Today I'm sitting around waiting for the plumber to show up to replace the water line to the house from the street, while my wife is many miles away in sequestration on doctor's orders as she deals with her illness.

So anyways, my cats are living proof that men were put on this Earth to keep the women in line. =)

Though I wouldn't recommend his method. It isn't humane and often ends with tufts of hair clenched between his lips. So there we are, the tortoisehair loves to tease, "Pet me, oh please won't you rub my tawdry fur," and then I do and she's like, "Accoster! Rat! The nerve!"

Yeah.

This thread isn't really serious--mostly in jest, but mainly a product of my boredom. I'll go find something more productive to do for a bit.

It'll be play (hunting practice) the cat is after.

Laser pen used carefully is good, tho there is a reason cat behaviourist Jason Galaxy seems to find this is much the best toy for a cat:

Next best is probably the sort of little balls that come with this set, especially if you have some tiled or wooden floors, as the cat can bat them around then chase them, only needing intervention when the ball-thing gets stuck somewhere...probably every 30 seconds. More solid eg plastic balls are better for carpeted floors, provided the pile is not deep.

Cat pics!

We inherited a Russian Blue named "Smokie" when my mother-in-law passed away, mainly just lazily hangs out in one of her cat trees (the big one is in the background of the last pic). She bugs the crap out of me every evening until I pull up a chair next to me for her to jump on to. I pet her for about 10 min. and then she scampers off, they just need a little daily attention.

Her main entertainment, I guess, is getting away from our male Jack Russell. He's fixed (as is our female Jack and the cat) but it doesn't keep him from trying. smile

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
My neutered black and white tom cat would jump up on the back of my arm chair and launch himself into the gap between my leg and the arm of the chair, landing on his back, legs in the air all splayed out and staring at me. I could read his thoughts..." come on tickle me, come on... what are you scared of? tickle me... I dare you..." yeah tickle him and he would rip your arm to shreds biggrin

What are people using for image hosting now that photobucket has gone nuts? Apparently most of my pics are over 2MB and can't be uploaded.

I know you said this was mainly humor, but it could be otherwise. I don't want to worry you, but take it to the vet ASAP.
When they start wanting extra attention, but seem "cranky" at the same time, don't feel like contact but won't leave you alone, or get much more vocal, they're telling you their likely in pain.
My wife's cat started doing that and we spent a month trying everything we could until we finally figured out. Turned out she had really bad arthritis, although she didn't let on, had developed a serious heart murmur and some other issues.
By the time they start letting you know it's often pretty far along. They just don't show pain like you would expect.

Put her on canned food, other than fish. If she isn't drinking much water, she'll need it. They get most of their water from their food, so dry food isn't that great for them. When feeling really bad they often stop drinking.

Otherwise, make sure the litter box is clean, unless they go outside instead. You'd know if the cat just didn't like being petted in certain places, so I assume it isn't that. Still, I'd get it checked out.

Imgur works great. If I can find some pics of ours, I'll post one. Our tortoishair is very... fickle. Sometimes she's a robot, and I call her that, which my daughter does not like.

Is she in season? Obviously this won't be an issue if neutered, but that does send em a bit loopy for a week or two...

Heck no. Though, when we first got her she was a rescue--had a chicken bone lodged in her throat as a kitten, digging through trash bins for scraps. She battled bronchitis for months. And yes, she wasn't fixed, so at about six or seven months of age(surprisingly) she went into heat. That was... something to behold, in a disturbing, animalistic way. We had her fixed shortly thereafter.

A cat in heat can be infuriating. And they can go right back into it, they don't have "seasons" which is why they overpopulate so easily.

My neighbors had a female cat, dead at 17 years old. 16 years with 3 litters per year, an average of 3 to 4 kittens per litter. More than 150 kittens for a female if it lived a full lifetime. I'm just happy to have sent mine on a surgery table. Today, my neighbors have another female cat, a sterilised one. biggrin

It's maybe nothing, she is trying to say something to you, and tortoisehair are sometimes a bit special. Did you change something in the house ? Maybe her restplace. Does she eat and drink normally ? Do you live near cropfields ? Like Raw Kryptonite said, it could be important.

Dogs just seem so much easier. Except for if you want to leave the house for the weekend.
