Agree with the general direction of your comments.

My personal take is:

AMD bet on HBM2, and lost. So, the product is 9 months late. However, that only hurts AMD -- 9 months of lost sales -- and a less competitive product for the date of release. It does not hurt any customer who buys an RX Vega or Nvidia card in the future. So, I have a problem with reviews dwelling on the "lateness".

I do understand why AMD has to "bet" on new technology. They don't have the money to have a "back up plan". So, they take their best guess and go for it.

For current buyers -- hmmm. Sold out. That was expected, by me.

The best cards always come out weeks or a few months after the first reference cards. Again, that hurts AMD because some folks can't wait for that. But, it does not hurt anyone buying AMD or Nvidia when they do arrive.

You may be correct about the 70/30 if one considers raw wins and losses and ranks performance in DX11 to be as important as performance in DX12 and Vulcan. I don't though. I consider "how close" was the loser and I consider DX12 and Vulcan performance to be "the future" (every card seems to do well in DX11 -- even my RX480 at 1440p). In almost all its losses, RX Vega would be hard or impossible to distinguish in a blind test (same for Nvidia in their losses -- too close to matter).

So, for now, it comes down to "bang per buck" in cards that perform within about 10 percent of one another -- to my way of thinking. Or, alternatively, is one an AMD Fan or an Nvidia Fan -- buy from your favorite manufacturer because you won't "see" the difference ("measure" but not "see").

The jury is still out on Bang per Buck, and new drivers, I think -- we have to wait for the drivers and market to stabilize (two or three months, at least). And, fans will be fans. I'm an AMD fan as you all know smile . So, I'll buy nothing or buy AMD (nothing for now). But, I do recognize AMD shortcomings -- when they occur smile

I don't expect everyone to see things like I do smile

AMD issues official statement regarding Radeon RX Vega 64 pricing

AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 will be restocked for 499 USD ‘over the next few weeks’

At IO-Tech, we can find the official statement from AMD:

Radeon RX Vega 64 demand continues to exceed expectations. AMD is working closely with its partners to address this demand. Our initial launch quantities included standalone Radeon RX Vega 64 at SEP of $499, Radeon RX Vega 64 Black Packs at SEP of $599, and Radeon RX Vega 64 Aqua Packs at SEP of $699. We are working with our partners to restock all SKUs of Radeon RX Vega 64 including the standalone cards and Gamer Packs over the next few weeks, and you should expect quantities of Vega to start arriving in the coming days...

Some rumors lately were that the $499 price was NOT the real price -- it would rise, they said.

At least for now, $499 is the "real price" for the Reference version of the card. Of course, sellers can charge whatever they can get -- and folks can buy or take a pass if they are too expensive -- that's capitalism.

Samsung shows 49-inch 32:9 monitor at Gamescom 2017

With 3840x1080 resolution and AMD FreeSync 2

Based on a 49-inch QLED VA panel with 32:9 aspect ratio, 3840x1080 resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and 1800R curvature, the announced Samsung CHG90 is basically two 27-inch 1080p 16:9 aspect ratio screens packed in a single bezel. The rest of the specs include 350cd/m2 maximum brightness, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 1ms response time, 178/178 degree viewing angles and 125 percent sRGB coverage...

..the AMD FreeSync 2 generally brings better HDR support, Low Framerate Compensation (LFC), low-latency, high-brightness pixels, excellent black levels and a wide color gamut to display High Dynamic Range (HDR) content..

The Samsung CHG90 is already available for pre-order with a US $1,499.99 price in the US and €1399.90 in Europe.

I'm almost interested. I like the 49 inch measurement (nearly perfect for my space), 125%RGB, and the 3000:1 native contrast. However, I'd like a version in 1440p or better (but that's just me).

Anyhow, it would be an excuse to go RX Vega (right now I'm waiting to see what the RX Vega market will be on or around "Black Friday"). As I frequently note, all I actually need with my current games and monitors is my RX480 Reference card.

Exclusive: Radeon RX Vega 64 MSRP Pricing Update

..we have a real update .. We spoke to a source close to AMD who is very knowledgeable about the matter and were finally able to get a solid answer.

..the original launch MSRPs from AMD have not changed, however the company did run into a serious supply block causing retailers and e-tailers to hike prices due to demand. The reason AMD has been tight lipped about the entire issue is because they cannot be seen enforcing retailer MSRPs (which would be illegal);.

Will users be able to buy RX Vega 64 at the marketed MSRP of $499? The short answer is approximately yes, but the long answer is slightly more complex..

Remember, it is illegal for AMD to force a price point on retailers. Our source believed that the market forces should naturally converge at a universal price point of $599..

Our source informed us that the cost structure for RX Vega 64 will go down in Q4 2017 once SK Hynix enters the market with their own HBM2 memory (bringing the total number no. of HBM2 suppliers to 2 and forcing prices down) and add-in-board partners start manufacturing their own custom boards. Whether this reduction in cost structure translates into a lower selling price for consumers depends entirely on the retailers and demand....

This article repeats the theme: Free-market forces will keep prices up -- while AMD will be offering incentives that will make some cards cost the suggested retail price of $499. There is a good stock of cards existing in the pipeline the article says. However, there were shipment delays.

Its possible to charge high prices because people want RX Vega enough to pay high prices, "today". We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Not special by itself, the new beta driver indicates how new drivers may improve RX Vega in some games where it fell slightly behind its similarly priced Nvidia competition. We'll see where we are by Black Friday. I expect RX Vega to be "competitive" across the board -- not "the winner" in every game.

.. price hikes arising from the GDDR memory shortage.

According to Digitimes, first-tier vendors are expected to raise their Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060/1050 graphics card pricing by three to 10 percent at the end of August...

Surprisingly (to me), even Nvidia will be hit by a GDDR memory shortage leading to a price hike (as with AMD's HBM2 shortage in RX Vega).

Anyhow, Nvidia fans on the cusp of a purchase decision, might want to act sooner (or wait for Black Friday).

AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 gets faster with Vega 64 BIOS

..flashing 64 BIOS into 56 will not give you any extra boost thanks to more cores. However, the BIOS will change clock speeds which apparently have a much greater effect on the performance...

Only one unsubstantiated data point. However, in a benchmark, the "BIOS flashed" RX Vega 56 almost equaled or slightly out paced the standard RX Vega 64.

Let's say they were "competitive" (you won't "see" the difference between them after the flash -- based on one test).

AMD’s Raja Koduri Breaks Silence On Vega – Discusses Pricing, Perf/$, Perf/Watt & Untapped Hardware Features

Supply issues aside, Vega has managed to largely deliver on what the company promised. Which is partly why there’s a supply issue to begin with..

Also, according to Raja, Vega has the widest feasible operational power range in either direction of any GPU in existence..

Vega’s power efficiency can only be exposed and truly appreciated in power saver mode. In the RX Vega 64’s case this mode can save up to 120 watts of power, cutting effective power consumption by over 35%, whilst only slashing performance by roughly 4%..

According to Raja, Vega 10 was intended to be as versatile as possible from the get-go in order to compete with three different GPU designs from NVIDIA, GP100, GP102 and GPU104. .. Unlike NVIDIA, which had the luxury of designing different GPUs for gaming and compute, AMD had to design a GPU that can do both..

AMD Radeon fans have long coined the term “fine wine” to describe the process by which AMD’s GCN based Radeon GPUs mature overtime and often significantly surpass their NVIDIA counterparts in performance..

Raja’s comments regarding Vega’s well of untapped hardware potential brings that term to mind...

AMD Launches Ryzen ‘Threadripper 1900X’ 8-Core Processor With 64 PCIe Lanes for $549 MSRP

Newegg has the 16 and 12 core versions this morning at the advertised prices.

While I don't know how well Threadripper overclocks from my own experience, I do know that my Ryzen 1800X runs 4.0GHz on all cores at stock voltages (water cooled -- runs cool).

The charts tell the story and compare Threadripper to Ryzen 1800X.

BEWARE: Latest Gigabyte X370 Motherboard BIOS Can Permanently Damage AMD Ryzen CPUs, Sets Voltage Up To 1.7V

..Gigabyte posted a new BIOS on their support page for the X370 Gaming K7 and X370 Gaming K5. The specific BIOS versions are F5 for the Gaming K7 and F7 for the Gaming K5..

..The issue isn’t technically with AMD CPUs or any other motherboards. It purely related to Gigabyte X370 motherboards...

Hmmm. That's my motherboard. Just changed to F5 BIOS a few days ago. Have to check it out.

UPDATE: Yup, the voltages are "INSANE". Almost 2 volts (1.45 is the most I want to go). So, time to turn it off and re-flash the BIOS.

Dropping back to the older F4 BIOS on the Gigabyte x370 made no difference in performance that I could see or measure (but I did not do a comprehensive test).

In checking, I noticed that Gigabyte has removed the F5 bios from the X370 support page.

AMD CPU Sales Overtake Intel For The First Time In Over A Decade At Germany’s Largest E-Tailer

AMD has reached its biggest marketshare milestone in over a decade, overtaking Intel in both units sold and revenue at Germany’s largest online retailer. The data pulled from the “Newegg” of Germany, Mindfactory.de..

..finally surpassing Intel with over 56% of the unit share in August..

AMD’s best seller appears to be the Ryzen 5 1600, which should be of little surprise considering the incredible value this six core processor offers at just $220. In close second, third and fourth are AMD’s Ryzen 7 1700, Ryzen 5 1600X and Ryzen 7 1700X.

In sharp contrast to AMD’s diverse lineup of highly popular chips, only a single SKU accounts for nearly half of all of Intel’s desktop unit sales and that’s the i7 7700K. This explains why the 7700K continues to maintain somewhat of a grip on Amazon’s #1 best seller spot, whilst AMD’s Ryzen chips often occupy the majority of the top 5..

When all is said and done, one must appreciate the fact that for the first time in ages, fierce competition is back in the CPU market and if this sales data is anything to go by hardware enthusiasts are loving every minute of it.

AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 Blows Away [AMD] Polaris & [Nvidia] Pascal In Ethereum Mining Performance & Efficiency
..
With mining performance that’s out of this world we have no doubt that miners are going to strip the supply of Vega cards dry. Miners have already been gobbling up RX 580 and 570 supply for months and with Vega the situation is looking even more dire...

Article

This article was published a couple days ago. However, RX Vega was so superior in the tests that there was some question if it was correct -- so, I didn't post the conclusions. Now, the conclusions have been confirmed.

The RX Vega 64 is not the "fastest" FPS card made (its "competitive"). However, these days, graphics cards are also supposed to do "compute" tasks. In compute tasks, the gaming RX Vega competes more than adequately. Thing is, that raises selling prices.

Otherwise, its a "quiet time" for AMD. Nearly all the new AMD game related stuff (Vega, Ryzen, Threadripper) has been released and independently tested. So, potential buyers can make their own decisions based on their needs and budget.

I'm still waiting to see what "Black Friday" brings -- what RX Vega custom cards, what performance, what price smile

For those of us with Gigabyte AX370-Gaming K7 motherboards -- ONLY (other makes and models do not have the issue).

The new F6 BIOS is out and works on my machine. The F4 BIOS is safe to use. The F5 BIOS should be replaced immediately with F6 or F4 -- it can ruin the Ryzen CPU by overvoltage.

Basically, Ryzen and Vega are new designs that took 4 years to develop. At some point, they had to stop designing and start making parts to sell. Even so, the first products are very competitive with established Intel and Nvidia products. Things will only get better over the next couple years -- the AMD spokes person says in the interview.

The AMD marketing manager is hardly going to say anything to the contrary!

AMD engineers built Ryzen Threadripper in their spare time

There is an interesting story behind Threadripper.
..
"It’s not really a story of roadmaps and long-term planning or huge R&D budgets—it’s a lot more personal than that and stemmed from a skunkworks project and a small group of AMD employees who had a vision of a processor they’d really want in terms of a high-performance PC," Sarah Youngbauer from AMD's communications team told Forbes.

"They worked on it in their spare time and it was really a passion project for about a year before they sought the green light from management, which is quite unusual— it was something they really cared about,"

That article points to this 5 page Forbes article.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper: The Fascinating Story Behind The Processor That Beat Intel
..
Where AMD is still a little slower, for example in some older or lightly threaded games, is less of an issue as many people will use Ryzen Threadripper purely for its multithreaded performance. It has to be said that there aren't many reasons to choose Intel in the high end desktop market at this price point..

As for some of the next AMD products now and next year:

AMD Vega 11 GPUs Entering Production, Vega 20 Coming On 7nm
..
Vega 11 is a mid-range part based on AMD’s new graphics architecture. It’s expected to replace Polaris 10/20 and the RX 580/570 graphics cards and is rumored to feature HBM2 technology rather than GDDR5..
..
Vega 20 is going to be the highest end part from AMD’s Vega family, at least that we know of right now. This GPU will go into future Radeon Instinct accelerators, feature 32GB of HBM2 memory and is believed to feature fully unlocked double precision compute. Vega 20 is aimed squarely at NVIDIA’s Volta V100 accelerator to address the growing AI and machine learning markets..

AGESA 1.0.0.6b Might Fix The Ryzen Linux Performance Marginality Problem

Motherboard vendors have begun pushing out BIOS updates for Ryzen motherboards using the AMD AGESA 1.0.0.6b revision and it's reported that it does resolve the "Performance Marginality Problem" affecting early Ryzen Linux customers. .

Latest BIOS has been out for nearly two weeks on some motherboards. Thing is, its not clear what it fixes or improves. Some folks think it fixes the Linux issue that a few users were having.

I'm not updating BIOS to this version on my motherboard -- unless I know its better for my Windows 10 uses. At least one person wrote to say flashing the BIOS bricked their new system (that happens randomly with any CPU and motherboard -- so, flash BIOS at own risk). The current BIOS works fine for me and my "vanilla" settings with small CPU and Memory overclocks.
