Even on a crappy little color TV it managed to totally pull me in.

LOL! Just like me growing up!

Missed StarWars but knew the story from comic books at school, missed Close Encounters, missed Alien, missed but desperately wanted to see Blade Runner... EmpireSB saw in the theatres and was blown away by just how relentless imposing and evil Vader was in it...and the snowspeeders, what a rush! Then parents divorced, and Dad took us to see Raiders of the Lost Ark, and ST2 Wrath of Khan...awesome! Even the divorce was good, as they were horrific together...but that's another story.

Isn't Yellowstone in WY? I think there's more to see there than Devil's Tower, which is just a mountain sitting there.

A great movie in all versions of it.

One of the classic sci-fi movies around.

An interesting factoid about this movie is that Spielberg had the film editing done to fit the music.

The scene where the scientists scramble to find a globe so they can look up the coordinates from the alien transmission seems so quaint now due to it being so outdated technologically.

A current movie now showing scientists scrambling to bring up Googlemaps on a smartphone just wouldn't be as dramatic. smile

I saw this in the theater in the 70s when I was a little kid. It's still as awesome now as it was then, and let my daughter watch it when she was four, about the same time I showed her the original Ghostbusters, too.

Loved it, great movie. Saw it when i was about twelve and probably another 3 times since then. Another year or so and it will be time for another rewatch:)

It's a great, great movie. I was fortunate enough to see it when it was released, and so the end scene with the ship behind Devil's Tower was a genuine awesome reveal.

So do you guys like the ending where Roy enters the mothership and leaves with the aliens or do you prefer the original theatrical ending?

Original theatrical ending is where Roy enters the ship and leaves - the later edit reveals the inside of the ship. I preferred the original ending myself smile revealing too much detail diminishes the idea I feel.

Yeah you're right. It's been a while since I've seen the movie so all of the alternate endings and different versions of the film can be a blur to me.
