No switching between campaigns and have upped the difficulty to "Realistic", so I'll probably die a horrible death.

Again a stock 1984 campaign, and I am using the Los Angeles class Flight III mod for my boat.

I have been given command of the USS Springfield, SSN-761, currently based in Holy Loch, Scotland. COMSUBLANT gives us our first mission, we are to hunt down and kill any guided missile subs we can find. We are successful in our first mission and sink a Sierra class boat along with a Charlie class guided missile sub. COMSUBLANT wastes no time in assigning us our next mission, we are to find a replenishment op in the Greenland Sea. Luck is not with us this time and we are unable to locate this operation, and COMSUBLANT sends us to Iceland to guard against a probable enemy invasion attempt.

[Linked Image]

We take position off the west coast of Iceland and wait for the enemy. Intel reports a surface group off the east coast of Iceland but is unsure if that is the force we are expecting.

Well the landing force came in from the north via the Denmark Strait. I missed them at first and had to run at flank speed to catch them, I think they had already landed part of the force when we made contact. Big enough force to accomadate a reinforced naval Infantry Brigade. The plot as we fired on the two closest escorts:

[Linked Image]

We took out both Kanin's.

[Linked Image]

I brought the boat up to 75 feet and ordered 4 TSAM's launched at the landing ships. My inexperienced crew fouled up and 1 TASM then 3 TLAM's. So we had to fire 3 more TASM's in a hurry. I then ordered to boat down to 250 feet, changed course and awaited the inevitable response from the Kresta II. It quickly came in the form of helo and SS-N-14 launched torpedo's, about 5 or 6 of them. Fired off a MOSS, decoys and went to flank speed and dove, but I only had 400 ft of water depth here. Took one hit and then we dragged the running gear along the bottom evading torpedos. We were dead in the water on the bottom and hunted.

[Linked Image]

We had no choice but to Abandon the boat and pray.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Somebody was watching out for us, as most of the crew was rescued, myself included. The Admiral said we are really hard up for sub skippers and gave me another boat.

[Linked Image]

Loaded the boat's VLS with TASM's, got a few Harpoons, 4 MOSS, a full load of Mk 48's and new crew and boat.

Had a lovely ride in a tin can back to Holy Loch. Nice North Atlantic storm hit about halfway there. You haven't lived till you've been in a small destroyer in 25' to 30' seas.

Back to the beach the afternoon of 12 Jan, set sail in the Greeneville the following evening. My new XO has the crew pretty well trained up and we''ll keep training while en-route to the Denmark Strait for another missile boat hunt.

[Linked Image]

It didn't take long once we got to our assigned area in the Denmark Strait. Sonar contacts...an Oscar and a Victor III...no old clunkers are these.

[Linked Image]

We fire Mk 48's at each target, initially one each target with a follow up for both targets. We reload as hit or wirebreaks, MOSS first then additional torps.

Bottom line, scratch two Soviet first line nuc boats.

[Linked Image]

We report in:

[Linked Image]

and...we get new orders:

[Linked Image]

Going to try to take it slow, patiently, and deliberately this time around. We will also try to make contact in deep water and take out the worst ASW threat FIRST if feasible. I do not want to repeat my mistakes that cost lives and my boat before.

So....we get to take on another invasion force single handed.

We take up position off of Trondheim. I quickly realized, having been here before, that the water is too shallow for my tastes and we move north up the coast to try and intercept the invasion TF in better water. We make contact in about 650 ft of water vs 350 ft in Trondheim. Smooth move number one on my part. Here's our initial plot of the bad guys:

[Linked Image]

We pick up one more Alligator and a cargo ship. This group could carry a well reinforced Naval infantry Brigade. Four escorts, though mostly older ships except the Kresta II. That being the most dangerous target, it gets the first torp fired, with an additional one for each of the escorts. Four fired total in the first wave , all are hits. Three go down with one torp each. We have already loaded and launched 3 more Mk 48's and have a MOSS in tube 4.

[Linked Image]

The Kresta needed another torp to finish it off. The other two I put on active and guided them towards the transport and LST's.

[Linked Image]

With the escorts out of the way, I direct the Chief of the Boat to bring us up to 80 ft and make ready the VLS.

Three TASM's for the remaining LST's and a harpoon from the torpedo room for the cargo ship, making a 180 degree turn and heading deep as soon as the last missile is away. The last TASM launches, followed by the harpoon....and we try to become a hole in the ocean.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Looks like another clean sweep.

[Linked Image]

Sonar reports no contacts except breaking up noises....wait... "Torpedo in the water, port side!"...what the....

"Fire the MOSS! Left full rudder, All head flank, full down on the planes and launch a decoy!"

Did we miss an escort? Some fighter jock screwed up and let a Bear in?

We go to silent running after the MOSS is running hoping the torp will follow it.....

Torpedo's coming back Capt, starboard side!

Right full rudder! All ahead flank, full up on the planes and launch another damned decoy

The torp BARELY misses us, but this time it circles the decoy and we go again to silent running and now nearer to the surface we hear the culprit. The Kresta must have launched it's Helo before we sank it and it came after us when it saw our missile launches.

[Linked Image]

We creep away, leaving the helo to the Norwegians. Once clear we run deep at 30 kts to clear the area.

We slow, come to periscope depth, and send our report:

[Linked Image]

We get an acknowledgement and sometime later I got this:

[Linked Image]

I guess they like me again. I hope so because I am ignoring my orders to head for the Barents and attack a replenishment operation until I re-arm at Holy Loch. I am not going to the Barents Sea with 3 Mk 48's!

I don't think I have seen a Bear or any other ASW fixed wing since the first couple of times I played.

Not complaining mind you. I also don't raise or use my periscope, ESM or radar either.

The USS Greeneville, it's crew, and yours truly are still alive and well and in the fight.

Have run more than a few missions since my last post, a re-supply attempt of the Soviet beach head in Iceland, another landing attempt in Norway, a couple of Spetnaz landing attempts and two ant-underway replenishment ops. I also passed on another Barents Sea ant-underway replenishment mission, not much future in it for the small gain IMO.

We destroyed the Soviet re-supply attempt in Iceland. Missile away!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Had a serious knife fight with a Vic III in the Greenland Sea.

[Linked Image]

After dealing with the Vic III and a surface escort, we then took out the re-supply ship it was using with a Harpoon.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Pretty successful missions and I picked up some decorations also. We have been ordered back to Holy Loch......

The boat and I are still hanging in there. I think my ignoring certain missions is prolonging the campaign. Just had another get the at sea re-supply operation.

Piece of cake and the target even had an added bonus, a Kiev class aircraft carrier being replenished! Really a weak escort frorce, two Krivaks.

[Linked Image]

Dying Krivak, too dark for any decent pics of the Kiev.

[Linked Image]

Next up another SEAL insertion up north.

My pleasure man. For some reason this one is not that hard for me. I have been pretty patient and careful this time around

Damn, I shouldn't have said that!...and now I have a freakin TLAM atttack mission up north!

Our next mission wasn't a SEAL insertion, it was Spetnaz interdiction which worked out well. I then had another attempted Amphib landing in Norway. I am getting pretty good at countering those....BUT

[Linked Image]

That's not the whole story. In my blood lust for the landing ships and the big escort, I somehow missed/forgot about a Krivak who proceeded to dump a whole bunch (like 4 salvos) of those hedgehog/depth bombs on my ass...I got down to 65% hull was leaking like a sieve, and barely got off a fatal snap shot on him, and we are ordered back to port to refit and re-arm. (like I wasn't going there anyway)

The Admiral said something about being picky in assignments, firing too much ordinance, and then muttering something about almost 500k TONS of Soviet combatant hardware being dispatched to the account of Mr. Davey Jones.

Me? I am off to the pub while the XO and the Chief of the Boat start the loading of the 8 TLAM's for our next little excursion. I'll have a quick one, then back to the boat to spell them so they may do the same.

After all, there's a war on I hear.

edit: That snapshot on the Krivak was an over the shoulder, preset the depth and active sonar, hope and pray shot at like 3k meters. Still don't know how I missed him being still active. The was a helo up but he was way far away from us. Loving the "easy" buttons.

US Nuclear submarine rumored lost

London (AP) A US nuclear attack submarine is said to have been lost to enemy action informed sources say. No comment from US Commands, but sources say rescue operations are ongoing and involve "very hard fighting by allied naval and air forces.

We will have more information as the story develops.

FWIW this game a some problems that rear their ugly head at times. One that I just discovered is that ZERO time passes when in 3d tactical mode. You can play for three hours on accelerated time (I did, waiting for a/c to go away, land run out of fuel) and not a minute passes, and those damn helos and fixed wings don't seem to use a drop of fuel and probably unlimited ordinance also. I watched a fixed wing (not the bear) dropping sonobuoys like snowflakes.

Still like it overall, and I know it's a tablet game port and all.

Well to make a long story short, I launched my TLAM's against Gremka, against my better judgement, but after waiting near the bottom for at least 2 hours on mostly accelerated time, I launched all 8 TLAMS.

I killed the target and a swarm of air launched torpedoes killed the Greeneville.

I have a new boat, and feel very lucky.

Ok, next up another Soviet attempted invasion of Norway, Narvik this time around.

Strategic map at start:

[Linked Image]

This map illustrates quite well why I try to avoid those trips up north, especially to go try and kill a replenishment ship in the Arctic. You can't decline missions, I just use them as an excuse to go to Holy Loch and have a few, ermm top off the boat in arms and supplies I mean. Mission usually expires as I leave port. For some reason, this is by far the longest campaign I have had yet, I think missing all those "low level, high risk" ones is a factor.

The usual tactics for me kill the escorts, then the transports.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Mission accomplished and we are off to Holy Loch for some TLAM's.

[Linked Image]

Like I said, it's been a really long war so far....and I am very lucky to be alive.

Impressive tonnage Nix, over 150k more than my completed campaign. Loving the hell out of your posts.

Incidentally, did you not like the mod that improves the campaign map UI? I find it so much more attractive.

I hope you don't mind Nixer me posting here. Just finished my campaign after some break from CW. Man, the new UI and crew voices are awsome. It was very succesful campaign. I'am playing on realistic. Lasted only 37 days. Completed 13 missions, including 2 TLAM strikes. Only one mission was a failure. During the last one I had to chase Typhoon and evade couple of torpedos from it's escort. Fortunately Typhoon was crippled quite fast so it couldn't escape me. I focused od evasive maneuvers and after that finished the Typhoon.

CW is the best game purchase for me in recent years. I so hope that KF is already thinking about making a succesor to Jane's 688I Hunter/Killer. thumbsup

Don't mind at all; my new friend from my mother's parent's home country.

CW IS a lot of fun. I just failed a TLAM strike on Murmansk! For some reason only 6 out of 8 were in play to acquire target.....that was NOT fun. As you all know who play you can spend A LOT of time getting into position to launch.

Got out after being depth bombed by a helo, it also launched a torp but it got suckered by a MOSS. I had launched two right after my last TLAM. It was really hard even approaching Murmansk from the west, first an invisible (on strategic map) surface group, then an all diesel electric pesky SMART pair of Kilos....they still don't fight back enough. Was their sonar that bad?

Die Comrades!

Gotta think it was...

Might be WAY different now with the wide open world of the WWW.
