Hi
can anyone confirm that WOFFUE uses surround sounds?
I ask because I don't hear the engine noise moving when I change my view.
I turned the engine sound off listened to other sounds like a truck or the ambient sounds with the distant flyby and when turning the view these sound also turned according to my view.
So what is up with the engine sound or is it supposed to be that way?
Cheers

WoffUE effects are mainly stereo samples and a few are mono.

About 6 months ago, I remastered all of the audio effects in the game into 5.1, 6 channel AC3 audio files with a LFE track which I was going to release as a mod, but there's 2 problems with that.

The first is the Mod size itself, the remastered 5.1 channel audio effects were just over 4GB in size, and while they worked great through my Sony HT-RT5 wireless surround that I have hooked up to my Creative ZX soundcard in my PC, they also halved the framerate in game.

I've been flying WOFF with a set of Logitech headphones that work very well. They come with a small piece of software that actually simulates surround sound through the headset. So when I'm flying and move my head around in sim, I can hear the sound being thrown between left and right channels - it also locates sound behind and ahead which works well.

You can find them here

If you are using any headphones with the Windows 10 creator update, just go to your : SOUND PROPERTIES - SPATIAL SOUND tab and Enable WINDOWS SONIC FOR HEADPHONES and tick the 7.1 VIRTUAL SURROUND SOUND box, It does the same as the headphones listed above for 0 outlay, it sounds really good with GTA V which is all I have had time to test it with so far.

If you really want to push the boat out, you can spend £14 on the 7.1 Dolby Atmos Virtual Surround sound codec, also found in the above sound properties although I have zero clue how good the codec is.

If you own a dedicated sound card ( I own a Creative ZX card ), it will also come with Virtual surround software like SBX Surround sound out of the box. Almost any OpenAL compatible game can also be hooked with HTRF Virtual surround sound for free too, I use it with Skyrim and Fallout 4 and it sounds great over headphones.

That's great advice 4L0M. I haven't gotten the creator update just yet - how has your experience with it been? I'm interested in the Game Mode as a way to possibly smooth out some of the occasional hiccups I get while playing WOFF. Have you had any luck with it?

Hi Capt. I haven't had any problems with Windows 10 creator update, in fact I was having a slight problem with Windows Explorer restarting itself occasionally and I thought maybe one of my hard drives were failing..... Anyway after it happened for the 5th time a message popped up on my screen saying "Windows thinks there maybe a problem with your X52 Pro, would you like Windows to attempt a fix?" I said yes, and lo and behold, it reinstalled the drivers for me without me having to do anything and sorted the problem, so that was pretty cool.

I haven't bothered with game mode to be honest. The one thing I make sure in Woff to completely get rid of stuttering is to make sure V-Sync is OFF. My frames may fluctuate between anywhere from 150 to mid 60's, but it never stutters. Even with V-Sync OFF I don't get any screen tearing either. Maybe try that mate?

I guess I should have given details, I use a 5.1 speaker system and a Xi-Fi Titanium between it is a Yamaha receiver, so no headphones or stuff like that.

No clue about how sound works in this or any 3d game but I guess mono/stereo sounds are all you need, 5.1 AC3 tracks are something for movies where I want to achieve an effect like a car drives out of the picture towards me and I hear it disappearing over my rear speakers, as neither to picture nor the speakers move the sound can move according to picture and desired effect, it does not rely on my view angle towards the TV, just because I look left the car doesn't disappear over the right speakers.
But in a 3d environment if a sound has a source defined that sound is always coming from where the source is. And if I now move my view the sound moves according to my view moves.
Of course I got no clue how it works in WOFF but my guess is that converting a stereo/mono sound to 5.1 is just a waste of resources especially with AC3 encoded as it is a burden for the CPU to decode on playback.

Back to my situation, had a plane on my left starting and that sound also perfectly moved over my speakers, still the sound of my own engine is just left/right speaker and does not move if I change my view.

Now what is interesting is that the engine sound is in stereo if I'm correct, the sounds used are:
Mercedes-DIIIa-rpm1
Mercedes-DIIIa-rpm2
Mercedes-DIIIa-rpm3
Mercedes-DIIIa-rpm4
Mercedes-DIIIa-shutdown
Mercedes-DIIIa-starter
Mercedes-DIIIa-startup

Now the sounds I heard when the other plane started were:
Mercedes-DIIIa-xrpm1.wav
Mercedes-DIIIa-xrpm2.wav
Mercedes-DIIIa-xrpm3.wav
Mercedes-DIIIa-xrpm4.wav
Mercedes-DIIIa-xshutdown.wav
Mercedes-DIIIa-xstarter.wav
Mercedes-DIIIa-xstartup.wav
but these are all mono sounds.

Makes me think that the stereo sounds do not move like the mono sounds do, but if that is wanted or not is likely a question for the devs.

5.1 tracks are mono, that's what gives you the separation depending on where your head looks, obviously stereo sounds output to 2 channels at the same time giving no separation. If you have a xfi card, surely you must have some faux surround software with it to emulate surround sound?

I'm using TekNmotion's Pulsar SX headset combined with Razer's Surround Pro software and WOFF sounds great.

There is no need for 5.1 in this game, maybe for the ambient sound if you place the various sounds within those tracks like birds, planes, trucks, etc. on specific channels but if I got a definite source for the sound mono/stereo is enough.

I just tested it and switched the mono tracks of my wing men's engine with the stereo tracks, now the sound of my wing men's engine moved perfectly and just like it did before.
Than I did the same with the stereo tracks of my own engine and replaced them with the mono tracks and here the sound did not move when I turned my view.
So in WOFF it's not about mono, stereo or 5.1 but about how the game handles these tracks.

Regarding the soundcard, there is Alchemy that enables surround for old games that used EAX, but CFS3 is none of them.
There are also settings within the Creative Console I could try but that stuff just fakes surround sound by expanding it over all speakers, that still doesn't give me a sense of where I'm looking in relation to my engine noise.
