I found the disks and manuals packed away yesterday and I installed them on my Win7 64 16GB i7-3770K machine

The game reports my RAM as 0 MB and the game will not lauch. My guess is that it doesn't recognize the speed of the RAM.

Anybody know the solution? I have already tried various compatibility modes, run as admin, and I install games to a custom location.

I know it's not the first thing to think of today when you say "ARMA" but somebody here must still play this parent of the game.

I think most have "upgraded" to ArmaX\Arma: Cold War Assault. CWA only costs $5 on Steam, and comes with the expansion. It should have the compatibility issues resolved.

I still have all of my old disks as well; but I (and others I know) don't even have an optical drive installed these days.

Recommending CWA is great, but...that's not what I wanted. I like to mess with the old games and get them to run, sometimes. I'd like to sort out my problem, not buy something else at this moment.

I don't know anyone who runs the original release, myself. I'm also not certain whether the CWA release was intended to overcome this problem with newer PC/OS, or not.

Sorry not to be of help.

I don't know the solution but, I will report that I have OFP game of the year edition patched to 1.96 and it runs fine on my Windows 7 64-bit computer.

462cid - check your OFP installation folder for a file named Flashpoint.rpt. if it is there, open it with notepad and see if has any details of what the problem might be.

Arma: Cold War Assault is still free for those with an installation key from OFP.

it is available from this Bohemia Interactive wiki page: https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma:_Cold_War_Assault

No such folder or file.

The game reports 0 MB RAM in "preferences". If photobucket wasn't such a basket of turds I'd post a screen grab.

BIS patches also do not launch. With no RAM reported, I am not surprised. I feel certain the program not detecting my RAM is the issue.

my OFP preferences menu also shows 0 MB of RAM. if i click on the Advanced tab I can manually set the RAM to 2048 MB and for me the game installs and runs ok.

my Windows 7 64-bit OS computer has an Intel Core I-7 4790K CPU with 8 GB of RAM.

I believe ARMA: Cold War Assault IS the original OFP, relaunched under a different name as the original name isn't owned by the devs, BIS.

I gave up trying to reinstall my original GOTY edition on Vista 64 and went for CWA instead. IIRC it was a free D/L at the time if you had the original game/keycode. I was able to find a file which enabled me to install the Red Hammer add-on with it (not included in CWA as it was a different dev, IIRC).

Nevertheless, if anyone fancies a bit of nostalgia mixed with eye-strain, I think this is the link to the free download I mentioned, for existing OFP-CWC users who can't get their original version to install:

I'm same-same with 'Advanced' and 2048 MB RAM selection.

No joy.

I suppose I'll have to try CWA

I don't care re: bad graphics. It had great gameplay

there are a number of mods available that enhance the graphics of OFP.

CWA is up and running on my WIN10 machine, the one I use for online.
Should be easy enough to get it on my WIN7 machine, I have some monster thumbdrives around here somewhere.

All good and running but..can't crouch.

Q key is set to two other actions from the get-go, and I don't have a 'crouch' option to re-assign a key to

edit-

looks like CWA doesn't support it. Odd, my original 'Field Guide' reference card for OFP shows it. Oh well.

in the OFP/CWA controls menu crouch is listed as "Move Up"

Z is "Move Down" aka go prone.

I truly appreciate all the help.

However I must report that in my original-from-2001 Field Guide from Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis by Codemasters, the three-sided reference card that shipped with the game, which is in perfect condition and in front of me at this moment, under 'Basic Movement", 'Infantry', right next to the picture of a soldier, the following commands are listed:

Z- get up/down

Q- crouch

Pressing Q does nothing now. Zip. Nada. Clearing one or both commands still results in nothing. The Default controls show Q being, by default, assigned to two functions, and the letter Q is in red for both, indicating conflict. This was not the case in OFP as I had it in 2001; no controls were conflicting as a default setting.

Also I found that the Mission Editor crashed the game.

I installed ARMA onto my WIN10 machine, the basic low end machine I use for online. Works like a charm. Q produces a crouch. Editor works,

I uninstalled ARMA on my good machine and re-installed it to the default directory and now it seems to work correctly.
