Started this AAR after I have already done a few missions. Next up; stop a Soviet landing attempt from the sea.

I have done a few of these now and I think I am getting the hang of it. I didn't think to take a screenshot of my mission orders so I'll just explain it to you. Intel reports the Soviets are going to attempt a seaborne landing in Norway near Trondheim. My boat, The USS San Juan is tasked with intercepting the Red landing force and sinking the transport/landing ships along with anything else I can send to Davy Jones locker.

Having done a few of these landings I am going to try something different this time around. I normally just place my boat in the suspected path of the invasion task force and let them come to me. It works but it seems most the time the Soviet task force has their best escorts leading the force and I catch hell from them when I attack. So...this time I decide to place my boat well off the coast above Trondheim and will attack the landing force from behind. I will fire torpedoes at my nearest ASW targets then launch at least 6 Tomahawk anti-ship missiles.

[Linked Image]

Looks like my plan has worked out so far as I have multiple surface sonar contacts to my south. The two nearest contacts are the trailing escorts, a pair of Kanin ASW ships. While not the worst threat out there, they are the closest and carry torpedoes and have got to go.

[Linked Image]

The sonar picture has firmed up now and is showing another Kanin and a bad news Kresta II out in front of the force farther south. The Kresta II is trouble with an organic ASW helo and one more fun little toy, an SS-N-14 ASW missile/torpedo launcher.

[Linked Image]

So first off I fire a Mk 48 ADCAP at each of the two close in Kanin's and one towards the Kresta II for good measure. I manage to kill both the nearby Kanins.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

But, as soon as I had fired those 3 torps I also launched about half a dozen Tomahawk TASM missiles at all the landing and transport ships.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

So I had three torps in the water, cruise missiles outbound and one of those Kanin's must have seen my missile launches because I now have a enemy torp in the water right next to me! I had dove as soon as my last missile was away now I launch a MOSS, pop a decoy, left full rudder, full down planes and all ahead flank....after about 10 seconds I go to silent and 5 kts and up on the bow planes. The torp chases after my noisy decoy.

I end up firing another spread of 3 missiles to finish off the survivors and a special torp for that Kresta II!

[Linked Image]

XO, have the Chief of the Boat break out the broom, we are heading for Holy Loch!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Looks like we are going back up North after a little R&R in Scotland XO. Grab that chart of the Barents coast. At least we won't have to go up a frakin river this time!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

In retrospect I should have waited until both the northern Kanins were down before firing my TASM's. They sent targeting info to that Kresta to launch on me.

More to come.

Since this Captain Nixer is in the Gulag, I guess I'll continue with my latest iteration of me in the war against the Soviets.

On my way to frakin Archangelisk AGAIN I stumbled upon an roving ASW task force in the middle of the Norwegian Sea.

I hadn't run into a group like this mid ocean before and this one was bad news. A Udaloy, a Kresta II and a Krivak. Udaloys are bad news and I tried going around these guys, no luck.

[Linked Image]

After a long drawn out battle/hide and seek game I won and killed all three of them. The Kresta II was the last to die and the only one I thought/had time to take a screen shot of. The Udaloys helo was buzzing around still hunting me so I had to tip toe away.

[Linked Image]

Made it almost all the way up the estuary this time before I got a contact.

[Linked Image]

Dispatched the Poti and then let loose the Tomahawks of War!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Proceeded to beat feet out of there. Ran into a Kresta, Kanin and a Kara pretty quick. The Kara is almost as bad news as a Udaloy. Smoked em, but before my torps took them out the Kara's helo launched a torp on me and then it depth charged me!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Leaking like a sieve, I limped down river and home. Luckily avoided any further contact and sailed into Holy Loch.

[Linked Image]

I had an easy Spetnaz intercept and then received orders to intercept a amphib task for heading for Norway.

More to come..............

Loving this game and your posts. Incidentally, have you considered some of the mods coming out for it. The more detailed map is good and more realistic voices are highlights so far. Worth a try and if don't mind a small amount of tinkering.

Keep em up.

Not really the right place for this, but since it was brought up - the enhanced map mod that RossUK referred to might have a minor issue (if I am thinking of the same one). I have it as "Cold_Waters_Enhanced_Navigation_Map_v1.2." It comes in Darker Colors and Vivid Colors. If this is the one, then make sure you use 7Zip to unpack it and not WinRAR. WinRAR caused an error for me and after installing it my Navigation Map was messed up. I used 7Zip and now it shows up fine. Just a heads-up.

That is odd, I used WinRAR and had no issues with it. Mine was the registered version, maybe the issue? The map is good though, improves the gameplay for me.

Hmmm, it's registered. Maybe because I'm in Win 10? If the file was corrupted, it probably wouldn't have worked with 7 Zip either. Oh well, the map is working and looks great. Thanks again.

Ahem...Attention on Deck!...and all that Navy stuff.

Back to the war.

We put into Holy Loch for re-arming with zero damage to repair for a change. After re-arming we immediately sailed towards Narvik on the Norwegian coast. The reds got tricky this time and sent a Udaloy led ASW TF in first. I barely avoided them and made contact with the landing force north of their target. Here's what the initial target plot looked like:

[Linked Image]

Looks like a 4 ship ASW escort consisting of three Kashins and and a damned Udaloy again in charge of the escort.

Kashin

[Linked Image]

Very dangerous Udaloy

[Linked Image]

My plan is to simultaneously take out all 3 Kashins, a single torp each will do the trick with these obsolete escorts. That should bring the Udaloy in at flank speed among the transports and heading for me. The plan goes perfectly and I kill the whole escort group with a total of 5 Mk 48 ADCAP's.

The last of the Kashins hit, one torp each.

[Linked Image]

Then the Udaloy, two torps at range, the second kills it.

[Linked Image]

Escorts gone, the transports are panicked.

[Linked Image]

We come up to 80 feet and I fire 4 TASM's at the transports. That's all it takes. Scratch one invasion TF!

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

We get ordered next to track and kill an underway replenishment op up in the Barents Sea. We don't even get out of the coastal area and run into two separate teams of Soviet diesel electric boats, totaling three Sierra's and a Juliet.

[Linked Image]

We manage to kill them all unscathed but I am very low on Mk 48's and out of MOSS decoys. Sorry Admiral, but I am not taking my boat into the Barents Sea without decoys and low on torpedoes!

We head for Holy Loch to re-arm. Chief of the boat, get a bigger broom! I guess they weren't too mad at me.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Could have been a lot different if I hadn't been able to avoid that first Udaloy led ASW hunter killer group. The Udaloy Capt in the landing TF was not very aggressive, plus we caught him way out of position. He was running when we killed him.

C'est la guerre!

Nah, thank goodness. It's hard enough to plan an attack to keep the organic helos surprised.

The land war is looking up and the crew is starting to talk about going home soon. Not good.....

The Soviets certainly haven't given up as we had to Obliterate another attempted landing on the Norwegian coast. The reds started making noises about nukes so we are being sent north to find and kill as many boomers as we can.

We make contact with a surface ASW escort first...more Udaloys...two this time! A couple of phantom sub contacts that don't last, lots of surface noise and we are quite busy with the ASW screen.

Another drawn out cat and mouse game ends up with us being the cat and sinking all 3 surface escorts. We get a cease fire/RTB message and send our mission report while en route to Holy Loch.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

64 ships and subs sunk in 61 days! Almost half a MILLION TONS of Russian sea power.

The war is over....

For now.

Have you had any joy with the Archangel TLAM mission, it is killing me. I can get to launch site but missiles never hit.

It seems like you just have to get 8 TLAM's into the little red circle.

It's a weird target, two port symbols. It seems like the ones that target the first (northernmost) one hit it, but if they target the furthest south one they plow into hills. I get hits on the 1st port, not the second. But I still get a mission complete...if I can get out of that hell hole.

ahoy

I was under the impression you launch from the red circle? So if I sit the other side of the circle and launch them THROUGH it that will be enough? I have heard that the mission is very buggy still.

The circle IS the target. Get within 100 mi of the circle and shoot at the circle.
