Can stop the hunt for it now. smile

Actually, it's the "Dmitri Donskoj" (TK-208).

https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/security/2017/07/typhoon-sails-surface

Next time, the Kremlin should issue a press release before the event, so that interested parties (me) could change their holiday plans. It's not often that one would be able to watch a surfaced Typhoon-class submarine, without having to travel too far.

BTW, what you can't see - and hear(!) - are the submerged NATO subs following closely (hopefully) smile smile

(Type 212s were developed with operations in the Baltic Sea in mind...those can sail the through the great belt submerged).

I see Russia is claiming it as a "show of force". I suppose that is possible, but a more likely seeming explanation is that the submarine has a problem preventing it from running submerged.

I thought of that too. A ballistic missile sub on the surface is an awfully vulnerable show of force. Plus that sub must be rather old and what state are they able to manintain it in? Their resources must be rather limited. Parking an aircraft carrier off shore is the traditional American way of intimidation.

Most likely, the reason for that sub cruising on the surface is that the Baltic Sea is rather shallow, and at the Great Belt is only 60 meters or so deep. According to Wikipedia, this particular Typhoon has a height - from keel to mast - of 28 meters. Also, this is a narrow and very busy sea lane. Not much margin for error.

Another reason may be that it was part of a small fleet centered around the "Peter the Great".

That would be an impressive boat to see in person. Perhaps somewhere below deck someone will slip on his tea which will then be followed by a vanishing act.

Amazing how much room certain areas seem to have. I wonder if the whole vessel is that roomy throughout?

Its roughly the size of an early dreadnaught battleship, and approaching the dimensions of a smaller aircraft carrier like the HMS Invincible of Falkland War fame, I would guess its fairly roomy, double hull or not.

But does the XO live in Montana?

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Of course "Typhoon" is the NATO designation. I believe the Russians refer to the sub as "Akula".

Yes, though confusingly NATO had an Akula designation for the Shchuka/Pike class of fast SSN. NATO naming the class of SSN after the lead boat.

Well, it can't be helped, that's how it looks after cooling the reactor because those pipes just aren't ever clean....

Depends on what's in the water even if it's clean. The hot springs nearby where I live is usually green due to the salt content in the water.
