Here's my short review if anyone is interested. Don't read any further if you want to avoid spoilers at all costs, but hopefully not too many included. I think it's indeed good, not my favourite movie off all times, but reasonably good. Plus: seems generally well documented, bar the lack of DB engines for german planes the aerial scenes are nice, not realistic due to aesthetics necessities but nice to watch, nothing really ridiculous like in most hollywood productions. Minus: timeline is very, very confusing, and even geographically it seems quite confusing at times. Notes: I wouldn't have lowered the gear, but it can be discussed. Did he get to s.hit at last ? Seems relieved when reading newspaper

bar the lack of DB engines for german planes
That's the trade off you get when a production uses real planes instead of CGI planes. I always think of the movie "Patton" and how ironic it is that during the Battle of Kasserine Pass both the US and Germany are using the M48 Patton tank instead of the correct Shermans and PZ iV's!

Just saw it in IMAX. Thought it was terrific. Very intense. It's as though the beach landing scene in Saving Private Ryan lasted for the entire two hours. No models, no computer graphics. Refreshing to see. Don't know how they pulled off those ship sinkings. Did they actually sink some old warships for the film? I don't think so. The air battles. Geez! You're in that Spitfire. Don't remember seeing any airwar films that have done it better. If they really do a remake of The Battle of Britain I hope it's like this. All that crap about the wrong engines in the 109's is rediculous. Who cares. Well done.

Going with my best friend (and maybe our wives) when he gets home from his final demobilization and retirement from the US Army, he's in Atlanta now waiting on his flight home so maybe tomorrow / next week.

Just got back from watching it with my wife (BTW, I love how my wife loves WWII movies). I really enjoyed it and so did she. Although we both couldn't understand a word the British were saying until about halfway though the movie, but you know what? With the way the story is told and filmed, you could figure it out pretty well. I think Nolan showed a great storytelling strength in that matter alone. He didn't need dialogue (and there isn't alot of it to boot) to get the story across.
It goes without saying that the air combat scenes were delicious. If you're into military aviation, or just hardcore air combat simming, you FEEL for the pilots. You root for them. You look to the skies alongside the soldiers on the ground and cheer and feel your hope renew itself once you hear those Rolls Royce engines. Likewise, when you hear that Stuka divebomb, you tense up.
The naval scenes were great too. I agree..I don't know how they did that, did they really sink ships for this? The attention to detail was such that even the oil leaking from the ship was in the water and the extras were swimming through it, black oil stuck to their faces.
The think I think really made it unique was the timeline. It took me a the first quarter of the movie to figure it out, but then when I did, boom, wow, that was such a great and fresh idea. The way in which the plotlines converged was genius. Of course, the overall tension in the film was made even more tangible with Hans Zimmer's score, one of his best so far.
The acts of unselfishness that the civilians show to the soldiers in this movie (and in real life) was enough to bring tears to your eyes. It makes me wonder if that kind of civil duty would still exist today if the same kind of situation came up. Generations back then certainly were different from now.
I want to see this film again, but this time in 70mm. The colors were excellent in the digital version as it was, I can't imagine the feel that 70 mm will have when watched.
Well done, Mr. Nolan. I wasn't sure what to expect from you tackling a WWII movie for the first time, especially with all your predecessors. But well done, you have one that will join the other classics.

Sitting in the Spitty as it shuddered and shook during maneuvers reminded me just how fragile these things were. I kept yelling in my head "LEAD... LEAD the shot, dammit!" they weren't great shots but they got the job done.
Agreed! A bunch of us combat flight simmers can relate big time when Tom Hardy tries to shoot down that German bomber before it can bomb the ship and fails. I certainly felt the disappointment that I couldn't stop him in time as Tom did! v6, boNes

I wonder if it would have been possible to paint the cowls of the Buchons green (as in a green screen effect) and then used CGI to make the front of the aircraft appear to be DB powered 109?
Maybe it's nitpicking, but Buchins are just flat out ugly to me, whereas the DB powered Bf-109 is a fine looking aircraft.

Yes, the sound! I didn't mention the sound.

' Honestly, I didn't find the ME-109s not being "true" ME-109s immersion breaking in the least. Yeah, you notice it when they first show up, but once the dogfighting starts...oh boy. You're not going to care. At all.
This.
