Is a woman! Does gender really matter with this character? My gut tells me it doesn't.

The Doctor has implied during the last couple of recent series that he could be regenerated as a woman.

Not the best series to keep consistency though, as I remember at some point implying it had come back as a woman at some point too.

Still...

Oh wow!...how surprising! Who could have though they would make a traditionally male character be a woman now. So original. So edgy! /s

The Doctor is more a "how he/she is written" character, than a who plays it character. As long as she remains an idealist and a pragmatic, it will still work.

Let me know when a traditionally female character is re-cast as a male. Now that would be news!

It's an unnecessary social experiment. Hope it works out though. I do like the Missy character.

I've been watching Dr. Who since the 70s, and this bothers me slightly. The series has been moving towards PC for the last ten or so years, but the episodes have been really good for the most part, at least. Then they killed off Clara Oswald(and did a damn good job with it, too). frown

We've already had one female Doctor, in the 1999 short "The Curse of Fatal Death", where Joanna Lumley played the role.

Thanks for that info. I had no idea about that.

Man or women, doesn't really bother me (ironically my Mrs doesn't think it's a good idea) I just hope the writing gets better.
Been watching some of the older seasons, with Ecclestone and Tenant.
Writing was so much better.

Last 2/3 seasons have been a bit of a let down for me.

That was a COmic Relief sketch, so it doesn't count as canon smile

But it's awesome.

Watch Tom Baker's seasons from the 70s then.

You mean Tom Baker and I'm old enough to have watched them at the time.
They are of the period and don't really stand the test of time

Yeah, Tom. The older I get the more my fingers type a different word than the one I'm thinking. :P I think they're quaint for what they are. Otherwise, yeah, Eccleston episodes were fantastic, and so were Tenant.

I watched the Tom Baker episodes as a young kid and enjoyed them at the time but I completely agree that they have not aged well. Those episodes definitely have their fair share of the typical 1970's campiness. smile

oh I disagree.... The Pyramids of Mars, Image of the Fendahl, Horror of Fang Rock, Robots of Death... they are still classics...

I never really got into Dr. Who, as it seemed like it was trying to be camp by playing it straight.

And no matter how good the acting, Daleks aren't scary.

Btw, the last time I watched the series...

The guy after him looked fussy and odd, so I was out...

I remember his robotic dog "K-9" and some of his female companions were nice eye candy. smile

Yeah, I watched for that cave woman or whatever she was. LOL
It's hard to watch those shows because of the cheap indoor sets, high school play lighting and just poor technical quality.
The acting wasn't bad considering they weren't in much better than green screen environments. Very 70's/early 80's for sure.
