A screen grab of the Gigabyte beta BIOS's as of this morning. Gives an idea where the BIOS headed (all Ryzen MB makers should have similar BIOS's).

Latest rumors supposedly based on "insider leaks":

Quote
AMD’s Entry Level Ryzen Threadripper 16 Core Chip is Rumored To Be Priced at $849 US – Ryzen Threadripper CPUs Very Cheap To Produce

..This pricing is much lower than.. Intel.. 16 core part which will retail at $1699 US..

..Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are very cheap to produce as the cost of a 16 core and 32 thread chip falls around $110-$120 US. That cost is included for the dies, package and testing. So AMD is making a big profit from each Threadripper sold which does bode well for AMD’s current financial situation..

..X399 motherboards while impressive (ASUS/Gigabyte/ASRock lineup), will cost a lot...

Intel’s 18 Core Skylake-X Won’t Be Available Until Next Year – 14 & 16 Core Parts To See Delayed Availability

Intel Was Clearly Blindsided By AMD’s Threadripper

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that Intel had always intended to continue its incrementalism had it got the chance.. The fact that [Intel is] nearly doubling the core count of its flagship CPU after years of incrementalism, speaks volumes. And the fact that these parts will see delayed availability tells us Intel was caught off guard and was clearly not ready for AMD’s Threadripper surprise..

Competition is good smile

What are you/your quoted links classing as 'flagship cpus' out of interest? Intel has had 12 core cpus available since 2013.

Intel 7th Gen Intel Core Desktop Processor i7-7700K (BX80677I77700K)

Date First Available [at Amazon] January 5, 2017

Above is latest installment of the i7-x700K line (the cores of which) Intel has been improving "incrementally" (article's term) for a while now. Articles, posters, and Intel advertising have pushed this as the top gamer's CPU (most still do).

If one wants to go by price or core count, then Intel 12 core would be tops for most users (however, its per core performance is only so-so). But, I've never seen that one "advertised to the masses" and "showcased" like a "flagship" product -- because significantly lower per-core performance would not do the job for a gamer.

The new 18 core is projected/rumored to cost $1999 -- that would make it the new flagship by the price definition.

Jumping from 4 cores or 12 cores right to 16 or 18 (with steps in between) is not an "incremental" improvement -- its a "dramatic" improvement (to most folks).

As I've mentioned, I think the argument (even for gamers) will shift (over the next couple years) from maximum single core performance (or per clock performance) towards maximum threaded performance. Intel seems to believe this too -- according to some articles.

To be clear, the articles I read are not saying Ryzen "blows Intel CPUs away". Rather, now the field is competitive. Intel needs to "step up" its game to remain competitive -- and Intel will step up its game -- as 18 cores indicates. However, they may still charge a "premium" price for an "Intel product".

AMD's next "jump" is rumored to be direct from 14nm to 7nm (deliberately bypassing 10nm to gain an edge). Intel is rumored to have planned a line of 10nm next. We'll see how that "competition" goes.

AMD GPU Supply Exhausted By Cryptocurrency Mining, AIBs Now Directly Advertising To Miners

AMD Radeon RX 500 series graphics cards, particularly the RX 580 and 570, have been out of stock for weeks now owing to the cryptocurrency mining craze..

Our resident lab-master and chief Keith May published a story a couple of weeks ago detailing the performance of different graphics cards in Etherium mining. No matter what price bracket we looked at AMD GPUs were the biggest profit makers in terms of a return on investment basis.

While some NVIDIA graphics cards do close the gap with their AMD counterparts in perf/watt at Etherium mining, their significantly higher initial cost make them far less profitable..

Used AMD Radeon Graphics Cards Are Catching 2-3 Times Their Original Value In The 2nd Hand Market...

It’s Official; IBM Launches The 5nm GAAFET Chip With 30 Billion Transistors Per 50mm², 75% Power & 40% Performance Boost

..The time of FinFET is gone folks, and now its time to move forward to GAAFET..

Right now, it’s expected that both Samsung and TSMC will commence risk production for 7nm next year. It’s currently time for 10nm, but IBM really has upped the bar today. IBM claims that when 5nm GAAFET is compared to 10nm commercial chips, you’ll get a 40% performance boost or an amazing 75% power consumption reduction, at similar performance levels. These are some big claims folks, so expect some big changes just around the corner. .

This chip is aimed at Cell Phones and other portables. But, it indicates how close we are to 5nm. So, maybe jumping to 7nm (as I mentioned above) is not cutting edge.

The article does indicate that 5nm requires a different, more complicated 3 dimensional architecture to work. So, its not merely a matter of making things smaller.

On the competition front, Intel makes progress on10nm and modifies terminology.

Quote
Ice Lake, our 2nd generation 10nm processor, is taped in. Intel continues to lead in 10nm technology. pic.twitter.com/meY8mZ6ou2

— Intel Official News (@intelnews) June 8, 2017
[i][/i]

..a tape-in is not the same as tape-out. A tape out is the last stage of IC design process in which the final design is sent to the fabrication facility to be .. fabricated. It essentially means that the designing stage is over..

A tape in is a relatively newer term that is reserved for complicated SOCs .. various components of the SOC have been finalized by their low-level design teams and handed over (taped-in) to the top level design team which will basically finalize .. before sending it to the fabrication facility (taping out)...

Speculation is that Intel will release the first 10nm products late this year (2017). The main Intel 10nm products are expected in 2018. AMD is rumored to be skipping 10nm and going straight to 7nm (from 14nm). 7nm AMD CPU/GPU rumored to be in development but not expected until 2018 or 2019.

"The Future And Current Status of AMD..." includes effective server CPUs. This will help AMD's "bottom line".

[AMD] EPYC evokes a massive interest

[AMD] Naples destroys [Intel] Broadwell E5 2699A

..AMD EPYC is an enterprise, server/cloud data center product that will put an incredible lot of pressure on Intel's server roadmap. AMD offers top to bottom solutions by having eight, sixteen, twenty-four and thirty-two core products..

..Naples or EPYC 7601, in its full 32-core and 64-thread glory, is putting a lot of pressure on Broadwell E5 2699 V4 and giving up to 45 percent higher performance in the 2P Integer Specint Rate base 2006 benchmark.

The same CPU scores 75 percent higher performance in the 2P floating point score...

AMD's Zen 2 and Zen 3 7nm are in the pipe

..AMD has Zen 2 and Zen 3 in the pipeline and for the enterprise / server market, those are Rome and Milan..

AMD managed to execute and it has definitely caught Intel by surprise. A few smart and bold decisions such as 128 PCIe lanes, 8-channel DDR4 memory, big L3 cache and 32-cores are just a few things that caught Intel off guard.

Oh boy, it is a good day for the server/enterprise world as the competition is back with a vengeance...

Of course, Intel will have to compete by improving its products. So, even Intel fans and Intel data centers will benefit. Competition is good smile

Intel's latest CPU versions may have a problem -- according to the Debian OS site. It applies to all operating systems -- including Windows. It can be fixed they say. But, takes action by the Intel PC owner -- involving a BIOS/UEFI update -- if I read correctly.

[WARNING] Intel Skylake/Kaby Lake processors: broken hyper-threading

This warning advisory is relevant for users of systems with the Intel
processors code-named "Skylake" and "Kaby Lake". These are: the 6th and
7th generation Intel Core processors..

Disable hyper-threading immediately in BIOS/UEFI to work around the
problem. Read this advisory for instructions about an Intel-provided
fix..

An AMD authorized a "limited preview" of Radeon Vega Frontier GPU (professional -- not gaming). But, it is supposed to be by an unbiased site using actual hardware (rather than rumor).

Quote
AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition preview

AMD has given an exclusive first look at Radeon Frontier to PCWorld. They were allowed to test it in few synthetic benchmarks like SPECviewperf or Cinebench OpenGL, however pure gaming benchmarks were out of the question. Although they were allowed to play Doom, Prey and Sniper Elite 4, no detailed performance metrics were revealed..

.. The cards appears to be faster than Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and close to that of a GTX 1080 Ti card..

..we are looking at 15 to 50% higher performance than TITAN Xp [depending on the test used] ...

Hopefully, the "gaming version" of RX Vega will out perform the "professional" version when gaming. Improved gaming for RX Vega has been rumored.

When Ryzen came out, the initial performance "lacked" because the motherboard BIOS's needed work.

On the competition front, it seems Intel has a similar issue.

Quote
Intel X299 platform is an overclockers' nightmare

Motherboard manufacturers or Intel to blame?

A well-known overclocker, der8auer, went out on a limb saying that current motherboards based on Intel's X299 chipset are not properly designed .. are an overclocking nightmare..

..can't be recommended for overclocking since temperatures on the VRM part reach well over 100 degrees Celsius and some even heat up the 8-pin EPS PSU cable to dangerous levels...

Not to knock Intel. Merely to say: Virtually all new designs have "teething issues".

So, AMD's slow start with Ryzen is not a sign of incompetence -- just "how it often goes with new stuff". Anyhow, now Ryzen pretty much works as advertised or better (with beta BIOS). So will Intel's new products -- in a few months (they may need new hardware -- not just a BIOS change).

Reviews of AMD Radeon RX Vega Frontier Edition GPU (professional card, not a gaming card) indicate its definitely not a cost effective gaming card. It plays games fast, but not nearly fast enough for the $1000 price.

In professional applications and benchmarks, it competes with Nvidia professional products -- wins some, loses others. Nvidia's fastest professional card is notably faster, but costs twice as much.

So, for professional users, it comes down to price/performance when choosing between pro-oriented Vega FE GPU and Nvidia professional GPU products. Gamers need not apply.

Another rumor/speculative article regarding RX Vega performance. Its conclusions are similar to other speculations but is not proven. Proof awaits release of RX Vega.

Based on Leaked unofficial test results, indications are that AMD RX Vega performance fits between Nvidia GTX1080 and GTX1080Ti.
