I just completed a land strike mission near Archangelsk for the first time and managed to extract my damaged 688 back to Holy Loch for repairs and refitting. I tell you, there is nothing like seeing a ASW helicopter in your periscope coming directly at you to make you ignore the cavitation warning.
In this particular mission, I was told to launch at least 10 TLAMs, so I made sure to bring more just in case - you never know for sure if one or more of your Tomahawks might get shot down before reaching its target (especially if it flies over a Soviet warship). There was a Grisha patrolling an area that would have put him under my TLAM's flight path, so I had to end my stealth status by sinking him. It's bad enough that the TLAM launch announces your presence, but sucks even worse having to stay below launch depth until you get a window of opportunity.
Anyway, lots of fun mixed with lots of waiting. Having a playlist of your favorite music going makes it even more fun.
I killed a blue whale with a mk 48 and have lost a few boats, but
pretty fun so far

If you like the stealth aspect of a subsim, definitely!
Also, for those who like me don't read the manual thoroughly (or don't get all the necessary info even if you do), I'd like to throw in a couple of pointers. Feel free to add anything handy you think of.
1) The target for your TLAMs is actually a blue dot on the map. In Spec Ops insertion missions you want to put your sub in that zone, but for land strikes you want to fire your 10 or more Tomahawks (the amount of TLAMs specified in the mission briefing is a minimum amount) into the blue zone which acts as a point of ingress for the missiles which are pre-programmed to carry on to their actual land targets from there.
2) Even though stealth is your friend, you most likely should destroy any serious warships in the vicinity (like Grisha class) because they can potentially shoot your TLAMs out of the sky. If they destroy enough, you won't hit enough targets for mission completion.
3) Once you have sent your TLAMs on their way and you are not too busy evading Soviet ASW efforts, use the F3 key to watch the Tomahawks hit their targets. I am not sure, but I worry about leaving combat too soon before the TLAMs are finished and thus not getting mission completion.
Having a blast with current campaign...still alive too!

Easy mode with the Flight III 688 mod. Got lucky and the SSBN was a Delta IV with an Alpha and a couple of Sierra's as escort in the Northern Bastion mission. Game spams alot of Alpha's considering only six were ever in active service though.

In progress 84 campaign. The cap ship kill was a Kirov which acted kind of dumb. Also got a Udalloy (sp?) before it got me for a change
Great fun. I haven't taken a hit so far this campaign! Had 3 torps in the water at one time chasing me, got lucky. MOSS is your friend.

Coolest mission yet. I think I spent over 3 hours on it. Amphib force attacking Iceland...they thought.
We killed them ALL! I chased one LST for almost an hour in accelerated time and got it with my last loaded Torp.
Ordered to Holy Loch to pick up some SEAL's and insert them on the N. Russian coast...east of Murmansk even!
No medals this time, go figure, had FIVE (5) torps in the water at one time after ME this trip. One decent hit from a helo dropped torp so I had to stay shallow or sink. I also FUBAR'd a torp tube firing to fast/deep, not sure which. Really fun. No help from the MOSS this time, just jink, drop decoys, and change depth ALOT.

Yep, amphib assaults are IMHO the best missions in game. You've got at least 3-4 transport ships to sink, at least 3-4 warships to evade and a helo. Yesterday had the similar one. Sunk 3/4 transport ships and 3 warships. Had to evade at least 4 torps. Got to love these knuckles. I was hit by some depth charges which damaged my propulsion. A fifth torp finally got me since i could not move but the crew survived and the mission was considered a success. So i have a new boat and continue to fight.
So...I guess everybody is dying in the cold northern seas...right?

I made it through to the end of the 1984 campaign last night with NATO winning. Killing that Typhoon class sub must have helped. Also, it was my first campaign with both a successful land strike and a successful SEAL team insertion. Although, the land strike was a narrow escape - I don't care how sneaky you are, a dozen Tomahawk missiles breaking the surface in rapid succession are difficult to do on-the-sly.
Wow! I am in the middle of(as in trying to escape with my/my crew's lives) my first ever TLAM attack. Down the freakin estuary to Arkhangelsk no less! There must be a Grisha shipyard there cause they are freakin everywhere. Grisha spam!
Saved it, will try to limp home with 61% hull and a leaky reactor room and NO FREAKIN FIRE CONTROL!
