So yesterday go to run some errands in the car and the engine is running rough and the engine idiot light is on. Take the car to the dealer to find out what is wrong and fix. Damn tree rats chewed on some wires again. The same wires that the tree rats had chewed on back in Feb but on each side of the repair..
The mechanic suggested spraying a cayenne pepper and water mixture on the wires.

Is the car in a garage or outdoors? Does it sit for a long time? We had problems with squirrels getting in our attic in the Winter. I got one of these electronic repellents, plugged it in, and no issues for the years since. The one I got doesn't affect dogs or cats (we have both), just rodents. I assume this one is like that, but might want to verify if you have pets.
I can't stand these #%&*$#, I have a lot of money invested in bird feeders. I find it very relaxing watching them from my kitchen window. Last year when I started damn squirrels climbed up the pole and broke one of my feeders. Ended up buying this baby when they don't listen when I try to scare them away a couple times.
4 dead ones sitting in my back woods. They seem to stay away now...

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet. I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

My parents are like you, they love having all kinds of birds around and the squirrels eat a lot of the seeds meant for the birds. What they did is put a plastic barrel out, fill it half full of water, and put a layer of oily black seed on top. Leave a stick laying against the barrel so the rats can climb up, they jump in for the seed and drown. Sometimes they'll get a dozen or more in a week.

They got our Ford Escape a few years back. No warranty coverage for it. Imagine that. Making cars out of rodent food gets you more going green brownie points, I guess. My brother is having a problem with chipmunks eating all of his wives flower garden up. I mentioned an idea like yours NH2112, but she was against it.
I like having bird feeders in the backyard. My Dad enjoys the birds (we get a lot of hawks too. I think they are awesome). The friggin' squirrels are a pain in the ass. Lately the robin's have been dive bombing them when they come in the yard. They must steal eggs too.
I got away lucky as it was just that one cable/wire. It was under the cover over the engine.. The engine bay was full of peanut shells. The neighbour feeds the rats.
The lucky is because a few weeks ago went to dust the dash with a hand towel I keep in the door pocket. As I began to dust, felt a lump in the towel. Upon looking to see what the lump was found a dead chipmunk. No clue how it got in the car but mechanic said it could have got in through a vent in the trunk. The vent is to stop over pressurizing the passenger compartment when the AC or heating is on. Thankfully it didn't chew on the wires under the dash.

Do you drive this vehicle very often? If not, that might help...lol.
I only say this because I have an old Dodge W150 truck that sometimes sits all winter in front of my barn, and without driving it very often I get mice infiltration. They'll get into the air filter and build nests. They get into the heating vents inside the cab...lovely smell of piss when I do drive it...lol. Plus when I turn on the heat for the first time in awhile I get loose leaf pieces and other nesting material blowing out at me. Last year in the spring I even had starlings build a nest in my engine compartment where I have a spot for an extra battery. Bird poo all over the engine.
I make it a point now to drive the beast about once a week to keep the critters away.
W_K, often enough (every day or two) that it should be OK. The problem is the neighbour who feeds them peanuts. The car is a safe place for them to hide after filling their mouth full of peanuts.
Catfish, never heard of martens in the city. Martens like squirrels.

I was driving to school one morning, years ago. Got behind a neighbor who was also driving to school. He had gone about 5 miles from his house when I noticed something hanging down underneath his car. Suddenly it fell from the car, hit the road, tumbled a number of times and then took off running. A squirrel!

Strange, though we have squirrels in abundance in England, never heard of them disabling cars like that.
Escaped hamsters and alarm wires though.....grrrrrrr.
I did read somewhere that more panzers on the Ost Front were disabled by gnawing rodents than by enemy action before Kursk. obviously better trained than the anti-tank dogs.
Hmm i guess i have to believe you, but in Europe squirrels only "sabotage" cables when they are accidentally electrocuted by tapping on live wires. No one has ever seen a squirrel gnawing on cables here. Rats, mice, martens and "polecats" (right word?, i mean the europ. Iltis, not a cat) do. Squirrels may place nuts in the car as a hiding place if the car is not moved for longer times, but biting into hoses and cables? We have lots of squirrels here, but no problems with them. Enough space from trees to house is of course a good idea, to prevent untimely action in the attic. Martens on the other hand are known for sniffing certain rubber and plastic softeners use in cables and seem to like them. Big problem with certain underground cables, companies here are currently tryng to change the oil and plastic softeners to something martens and other rodents do not like. If martens sniff another male that has been in the engine bay already, they get into a rage and bite through all they can find. We place metal grids on the ground, below the engine areas, they somehow do not like that and it works.
