Announced at the E3 livestream an hour ago. Thargoids are back in 2.4, in Q3 this year.

The Federation has lost two capital ships out near Maia, I flew out there and quite a bit of wreckage. It'll be interesting to see where this goes!

Is this HAPPENING NOW??!?!?!?? Or is this just in Beta? I've been reading the newsletters that get sent to my email addres... Oh boy....

Never really played the first Elite so don't know about the Thargoids aside from the fact that they're supposed to be alien bad guys... can you give us any spoilers? Who are they? How are they supposed to affect the Elite galaxy/universe? I understand the concept of "the bad guys are coming" in a game with a story, but this is sandbox....

I visited these wrecks today in the live game, not beta.

EDIT: About the Thargoids... As far as I know, they are suspected to be from an amonia-type world, and are rather insectoid in form. During the initial encounter some decades ago, their weapons were vicious against our own ships, and they were only beaten back by our infecting them with an engineered virus which they were not able to overcome. And they've not been seen since.

But I suppose they have overcome the virus, or at least are otherwise breaking back into the bubble again, somehow.

This initial clash with the Federation is in the live game now. I'd expect a news item on Galnet from the Federation (and probably others) today. Who knows what else is currently in the live game. But the main story will begin to unfold with the 2.4 release.

Nice!! So they went home, got everyone innoculated with the flu vaccine, then came back to deal with the sick and infectious humans? biggrin

About time they showed up. The peace is boring without any dangers to worry about beside stupid pirates.

So I've been away awhile.

Has the Thargoids invasion commenced yet? Are there things to do in game at this point? Thanks!

The closest to an "invasion" has been the damage they dealt to the Federal Capital ships, that I posted above.

Since then, however, several Thargoid surface sites have been discovered. CMDRs (myself included) have "invaded" these sites, and activated some of the stuff inside. I can't say what it means, but they are out there and something is brewing.

Today's newsletter says that the 2.4 beta will begin August 17th. Thargoids won't be active in the beta, but apparently will be when 2.4 goes live.

I'm taking some time to explore ahead of whatever is coming.

Thanks Adlabs6!

Looking forward to a desperate fight to save mankind! wink

I guess I'd better get my trash hauler to a safe port while I can.

They are really back, now. I've encountered my first Thargoid face to face a bit ago.

I took my Cobra out to the Pleiades. Seen maybe 20 or 30 Thargoids, trying to prevent them from stealing Escape Pods. They haven't shot at me yet, but then I've not been shooting, either.

They did a good job on the sights and sounds with this.
