What are some bands/artists that have been around for a long time but you only just recently discovered them?

The one that applies immediately to me is "Kraftwerk". I had no clue who they were until about 5 years ago when one day I was listening to Gary Numan songs on Youtube and one of the related "recommended" videos on the side pane was a song from "Kraftwerk". Anyway, I checked out the video which was for "Trans Europe Express" and I absolutely loved it and I've been hooked ever since. I even saw them live in Miami about 2 years ago.

Once I started learning guitar a few years ago I "discovered" many bands who I didn't really listen to much before. I was never really into the Southern Rock of the 70s and 80s, but damn those guys know how to play guitars! I liked some of their stuff, but now I dig just about everything from Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Tedusci Trucks Band, The Band, etc.

Discovered in name, music or both? Three that I can think of...

1. Lenny Kravitz

I'd heard "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and his cover of "American Woman" many times. Meh. "Believe" is pretty good though.

Anyway, I was looking for some new...man [sharing his] cave material, and came across what I thought were some real gems that I'd never heard before...

...and will be looking for more. Dude just has a good easy groove, IMO.

2. Moby (a different type of groove, but still mellow)...

Also getting into Enigma lately, having heard these two before (I think) but not knowing who the artist was...

...also others from their Greatest Hits.

Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run

Joe Walsh. Some of the most genuine, honest rock music I've heard in a very long time.

^ I was about 12 rows up from Joe Walsh (right corner of stage) for the Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" tour, mid-90's Atlanta. I was glad they played a couple solo songs each (Walsh and Henley, don't remember if Frey did any), including the two you posted above. Those songs sounded great live.

Another awesome song from Joe Walsh...

I'd have to say Pink Floyd because I really only knew The Wall and a very few others that I had sort of heard here and there. But lately I've been listening to a few of their more classic tunes that came out before The Wall and I love it.

I don't like the Syd Barret era Pink Floyd (first 2 albums) but I pretty much love everything else that came after that.

Yeah, the Syd Barrett stuff didn't pull me in.

On a related note, I should man-up and admit that I really didn't know who "Rush" was until I was in high school so this would have been 1988-1991. Once I discovered them though and listened to a few songs I was hooked. smile

@Panzermeyer, same here. I was walking from home to the Mannheim commissary where I bagged groceries and on the way a dude was walking with a boom box on his shoulder (very stereotypically) and blasting Tom Sawyer. I had no idea who it was, but the tune stuck in my head until finally I was at a friend's house and he played songs from the Moving Pictures album and I made the connection.

Not recently discovered, but I'd say recently appreciated - Mark Knopfler

A lot more to him than Dire Straits

The OG of electronic and industrial music. Kraftwerk were once described, as the grandfathers of Depeche Mode. That was back in the 80's even.

Myself, I've really started to appreciate Ladytron within these last few years. I knew who they were back in the 90's, but was probably too busy to care.

Iron Maiden, I was only really introduced to them about 10-15 years ago, just after "Brave New World" was released.

I had no clue who Pink Floyd was until a friend introduced me to them when I was in high school. This was about 1989-1990 so I learned about Pink Floyd very late indeed!!

I was never a big fan of Pink Floyd because when I was in my young partying days Floyd was always put on near the end of a party and became a buzz kill...lol. Nothing but sleepy music.

When I was working at an airline around 2002 a friend of mine loaned me the 1990 video of "The Wall:Live In Berlin" and I was blown away and I started really listening to a lot of their stuff. Now I'm a fan. smile
