Oh maaaan does that look sooooo good! I can't wait. I hope we're finally getting a current generation Jane's 688i Hunter Killer/Sub Command. Oh that looks good! Anything that gives off a Hunt for Red October vibe has me interested. Between this and UBOOT we may finally be getting some good Naval sims again which has been a long time coming. Thanks for the update flower and arthur.

thanks! I loved the old Microprose manuals, thumbing thru all the info and stats on the enemy hardware. I suppose that will be in-game reference, which makes sense.
Looks like controlling your sub is a little more involved than it was in Red Storm Rising. In that game, you could only give a depth and speed. Looks like in CW you can adjust ballast and dive planes.
Hmm, using unguided weapons from a nuclear sub will be a gaming first for me.
Wonder if there will be friendly surface and sub units on the battlefield?

I would prefer a Dangerous Waters level of simulation covering the same classes of submarines as Cold Waters. But I was a huge fan of Red Storm Rising in its day and this sim mixes beautiful modern graphics with gameplay that is comparable to Red Storm Rising in fun and realism. I served on SSN-687 and officially support Cold Waters as one of the best sub games available. But this is no surprise since I love both Pacific Fleet and Atlantic Fleet games already released by this company. They have a good model for what people like in a fun naval warfare game.

Just got the alert from Steam,
Released!
I'm going to purchase tonite, though I agree with @Chucky that you should be able to give an order for periscope depth and course. I knew you'ld be able to manually "drive" the sub, but don't want to have to be the helmsman as well as the captain in the heat of battle.

The only thing that gives me hope is that one of the devs said that if enough people asked for it,it could be considered being added. I'm trying to think of any subsim I've ever owned that didn't have that option.
I won't buy it without some navigation automation, like arthur stated, I "don't want to have to be the helmsman as well as the captain"

I'm just flicking through the manual and it seems that on the tactical map you can send your sub to a location but in 'real time' you have to WASD. I was also a little bummed about the high price but I guess this is a niche game and it was to be expected somewhat.

Mission Accomplished No contacts No weapons nearby No flooding
"Your orders, Sir?"
"Abandon Ship!"
(I hope that option has an "Are you sure?" pop-up)
Normally I would wait for a sale on just about anything, but this is too niche to not throw some support towards. Also, my right foot is donked and I can't really drive Assetto Corsa much, so some mouse/keyboard strategy is just what the doctor ordered.

I was a little baffled by the control scheme WASD too but I read a developer's statement on this aspect on Steam and I think it was basically a design choice they went with because they felt it kept the immersion better somehow. Not having the game or really fully understanding exactly how the map mode and real time mode works I don't know. Perhaps because how the game is designed this was the better option. Maybe its a mental thing that's catching us off guard because whether we press a button that causes us to dive or click a mouse button over a dive command that causes us to dive its sort of the same thing. Maybe we're just too used to having 90% of our sub games designed with an order-giving user interface using our mice that its throwing us off? I imagine once you get in-game and start understanding the mechanics it'll all make sense.
On WASD periscope depth: the association is wrong itself. It is best done with E and C. Do not use planes up/down, because then it is both rate of ascend and attitude, the latter being the problem. E/C is vertical up/down. Also, periscope depth is 45-50 ft. "Depth 40ft""oh I still have a few to go!""wooops!" It is a bit training and a tiny learning curve. I think some just can't be bothered.
A very nice gameplay from someone who knows what he's doing (navy background).
Indeed. Also the first narrated gameplay video that didn't annoy the hell out of me.
The RSR-vibe almost brought tears to my eyes. I've been waiting for this for a while and while it's a bit more expensive than I anticipated I'll not wait for a sale to support the effort.
Don Quixote's misfortune is not his imagination, but Sancho Panza.
Actually watching someone who is competent being able to handle the sub like that manually with WASD and the ballast keys gives me hope. I'd still like direct commands but I can see that it's perfectly playable. The price however is the sticking point for me. It's in my Steam wishlist so one day maybe I'll own it.

I really like the old RSR, so is this game similar to it? for those of you who have played the game, please give us your opinion and review. thanks.
I've played both, and yes it is very similar. No Seawolf or Improve Los Angeles timeframe, but you do get the Skipjack and the Narwhal. But you'll feel right at home the first time you see the campaign map with those little icons moving around. And I instinctively knew how to use the Mk48 and Harpoons effectively right away.
Entered the 1968 Campaign last night, random sub, USS Shark, Skipjack class. Failed my first 2 missions, but survived an IL-38 dropping torps on my cowardly a$$. It will be interesting struggling thru the campaign using the oldest sub. Those Mk37 are going to take a deft hand to be used effectively.
@Evil Flower, the Narwhal's description is the same as the Sturgeon's. You should change that to let people know how awesome that sub was.

I know the devs are around here, but where's the best place to report bugs?
The best place is probably here on SimHQ or SubSim. In general, it is never a good idea to discuss problems anywhere developers can make you and your bug reports magically disappear.
Well, I caved and bought it. Jive Turkey's video's sold it to me. He's doing a really great job of advertising CW. His gameplays are very informative. I've watched almost all of them and i feel like i know the game really well.

Oh yes, watching him as we speak and he is very calm and knows what he's doing. (seen numerous others, even folks screaming - maybe trying to look cool, and getting annoyed at them in no time) I think I am an upcoming customer.
Loving it so far. A little gem we got. Yes, there are bugs and some missing features but i think in time this will get better and better.
Crew voices are a must IMHO. I'd also like to have a proper message log. They disappear to quickly.
The AI needs some work also. It does not utilize vertical space so good. Evading subs are running into bottom or getting crushed for diving too deep (just happend to me).
And enemy subs need to stop pinging all the time. It makes hunting them too easy. I always shoot at a bearing of a ping and it's always a kill.
Still, it's really great. It's no SC or DW but you still need to use proper ASW tactics.
