Hi All,
I got round to taking some photos of the finished Pucara. Great fun to build. The aircraft is that flown by Major Carlos Tomba, and shot down by Commander Nigel 'Sharkey' Ward's Sea Harrier on 21st May 1982. This famous incident is one of my favourite stories from the war. The Pucara soaked up enormous damage, Ward proclaiming that he couldn't believe it was still flying and that Tomba hadn't ejected. Tomba did eject, at the last moment, and Ward later paid tribute to his bravery, airmanship and determination to save his aircraft. Tomba made it to the airfield at Goose Green on foot, where he was taken prisoner when the airfield was captured by 2 Para a few days later. He spent the rest of the war at the hospital at Ajax Bay, volunteering as an interpreter to ehlp the injured. Ward was informed by the CO (Rick Jolley) that Tomba was there, he passed on a message to Tomba saying that he was relieved he was "alive, well and useful." (Ward and Jolley have both published accounts of their roles in the war - both are highly recommended reading.)

I've always wanted a Pucara in my collection, and was very happy to purchase a copy of Aconcagua's all resin kit. It's an intimidating kit in the box, and it sat unbuilt for a good few years. On starting it, I found it wasn't anywhere near as difficult as I'd thought, and it went together really well.

cheers
Gareth

Fantastic work, goon.

Do you build up the grass area from smaller bits? Or does it come as a larger sheet you trim to fit the base?

Always a pleasure seeing your work.

Is the loadout accurate for the engagement, or a typical generic payload? Thanks for sharing the story!

Thanks everyone! smile

Adlabs - This is the first base I have made like this. I masked off the area around the edges, then sprayed a textured paint. (I think it's called Spackle paint or something.) I then sprayed this a dark earthy brown. The tufts are self-adhesive and I simply placed them around and about. Then I flooded the remaining area with PVA glue, and sprinkled liberally with different ground coverings, trying to make it look natural. I then drowned the lot with artist's fixative. It's pretty much rock hard now.

The loadout is a typical load out for the mission Tomba was tasked with, and there is anecdotal evidence that this was what was carried. I corresponded with the kit's designer and he was very sure this was the load on the day of the shooting down. I can't find photographic evidence though.

Thanks for the further comments. I think this is one of my favourite completions, what with the rarity of the subject and the challenge of the build itself, so I'm glad it's so well received. (I must get round to fixing the rear stay on the antenna under the rear fuselage. It must have come astray when the model abruptly tail sat when the join to the front wheel axle failed whilst handling. It's a big old lump of resin!)

cheers

I took the Pucara to Cosford to show and it got a lot of interest. Airfix Magazine chose to use a picture of it in the show report latest issue, which I am very pleased about!
