Secure erase using Samsung magician (840 evo) and then then let windows format it during the installation?

Why do you think you need to secure erase? I just "wipe" the SSD by getting the install process to format the resulting partitions. Nothing wrong about secure-erasing your SSD, but just don't see the need.... am I missing something?

Never seen the need either. I usually just remove all the old partitions during the Win 10 install. Just don't remove anything you may need by mistake if you have other drives connected.

Like the others, I just use the Windows 10 install application to remove/reset the old SSD partitions and let Windows 10 decide how to set up the new partitions (how many and how large) during its automated install process -- most recently, this last week.

It's not 1999, let Windows do the work.

If this was going to be an extra drive, not OS, you'd want to go into disk management and name it and give it a letter, so it would show up with your other drives.

Well Secure Erase is basically just a way to set the Drive to like when it was new.. It totally wipes the drive clean and if you had a virus or other nasty stuff it is reccomended to eradicate what was there..

IT is also good to secure erase if you would like to sell your drive to a 3rd party.. Alot of the new Motherboards have this feature built in to the BIOS.. it is a good feature and if you want a fresh start the best option..

With an SSD this is like writing ones and zeroes to the drive withoput writing to the drive it just wipes it totally.. now if the SSD had bad sectors this does not repair them just more or less wipes the drive and sets it to like factory default..

You may still need to setup the drive when installing windows with Windows partitions but that is different then secure wipe..

Thanks guys, so either way is good to go. I just wasn't sure about Windows totally handling it versus the secure erase option first smile

update-all good, just let windows handle the format during the install and was Win10 in under 20 minutes. The updates will slow me down next time i boot though i imagine smile Copying my old Steamapps folder made all of my game installs download free as well woot!
