You may have heard me speak before of my friend Doug. He was called to his reward today at 96 years old. He joined the Royal Navy in 1939 here in St. John's. He served in minesweepers in the Channel, in the Battle of the Atlantic and on Russian convoys in destroyers. He was in the Med and participated in the invasion of Sicily and later was there for the bombardment on D-Day. His ship HMS Howe then went to the Pacific until the end of the war. He did not get home until 1946. He was small in stature ( about 5'4" ) but had a big heart and great character. He had a fine tenor voice and sang in church and community choirs for many years. He served the youth the province for many years as a cadet leader after the war and rose the the rank of Major. He was a great man and will be missed. If I manage to post it properly you should see a short clip of him singing at last fall's Armistice Day service along with a local opera singer. He fought the good fight and finished the race. Rest in Peace sir . https://www.facebook.com/GoodSamANiC/videos/1160799530679294/

They're leaving this world too quickly, even at 96 years of age.
Well done, good and faithful servant!

Sorry to hear about this, Archie. My condolences. We're losing our WWII vets awfully fast.

So sorry for your loss Archie.
Sadly, they don't make many like him anymore.

What a great fellow. Seems he led a full life. You were fortunate to know him Archie.
May he Rest In Peace.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.
