Strike on Sunch'on
[F4 BMS 4.33.3]

Mission: OCA strike on Sunch'on AIrbase
Package: 2 x 2 F-16CM Block 40 SEAD Escort,
2 x F-16CM Block 40 Strike

Time over Target: 1732 hours
Take off Time: 1700-1704 Hours Osan Airbase

The mission is to strike Sunch'on airbase located just north of P'yongyang. Primary Objective is to shut down both airstrips at the target site. Sunch'on houses a MiG-29A squadron and a MiG-19 squadron. Intel reports both squadrons depleted.

OCA strike will be carried out by two Block 40 Vipers, callsign Stud 6, loaded with Durandal anti-runway weapons. SEAD and escort duties will be performed by 2 two-ships of Block 40s with HARMs, callsigns Avenger 6 and Cobra 6.

Takeoffs staggered by 2 minutes with the strike element taking off last. Flight path will be routed through a gap in the Red defenses southeast of Ch'orwon. Steerpoint 2 is just north of Seoul and should be considered rejoin for fence in. 10 minutes prior to our package fencing in a flight of Strike Eagles will hit the early-warning radar at Ch'orwon with GBU, with the intention of creating a gap in the enemy's radar coverage to slip through. Steerpoint 4 marks a turn to the NW. Steerpoint 5 marks the outer range of all known SAM threats in the target area. The target is steerpoint 7 with a fragged ToT of 1732 hours. All elements have the same steepoints so any position calls relative to them will be uniform for all pilots. Landing steepoint is Osan at 11. An emergency divert base has been assigned at Mandumi, which is our forward-most base and is steerpont 12. I can find no frequency for Mandumi but it's there for any wounded birds. Block 50s out of Kangnung will provide CAP for the divert base. The steerpoints are routed to avoid all known threats and provide a chance of arriving undetected. However, there may be undetected threats enroute. Bullseye is on the target.

Block 52 and Block 50 Vipers have been tasked with Wild Weasel missions on the east and north sides of P'yongyang prior to our package arriving at the target. North Korean capital city P'yongyang will loom to the left of the ingress and is heavily defended by SAMs and AAA. Very few missions have come close to that city thus far in the campaign, so expect all defenses to be full strength. The target area is well defended by SA-2 and SA-3 batteries. The SA-2 at Sunch'on airbase and the SA-2 just to the southwest should be considered critical targets to ensure I don't get shot down. AAA battalions are deployed along the ingress with several also just north and northeast of the target. Ice and I should come off target hard right to egress. Low level SAM threats are unknown at this time.

IP for stikers is located 10 miles southeast of the airfield and will turn the strikers in at the runway heading of 340 for the attack.

Osan is shared with the A-10 squadron but there are no A-10s scheduled to takeoff near us.

All escorts have been pre-configured with two -120s, two -9X, two -88s and wing bags plus jammer. Loadouts are at the discretion of each pilot so feel free to change.

Avenger 6 takeoff is scheduled for 1700 hours, followed by the other two elements at 2-minute intervals. This is 20 minutes from the save time. So once Oden starts the server clock we have 20 minutes to get set up, configure and save DTC and set any threat steerpoints. As always, don't forget to set your tower.

Air opposition is expected to be minimal as the DPRK air force is smashed. But you never know so keep a lookout. If MiGs scramble on us things could get hot quick. Avenger and Cobra are tasked with air defense and SEAD. No pure escort has been included. A EF-18G Growler from the carrier, callsign Hornet 1, has been added for jamming, but I have no idea if that works in BMS.

Weather is unknown really. You see in the briefing poor weather near base and fair at the target. Because of the way we have traded the save for me to frag this mission I am not certain how the weather map will be handled by the program. We will have no weather-restricted ordnance so it shouldn't make much difference either way. Be prepared for anything though.

Great Success to all 4 e-pilots rated Excellent.

The SAM layer was extensive but Mac and I managed to eliminate the most threatening sites in the target vincinity.
Several SAM radars kept looking at me while I went in over the target area with the intention of dragging any AAA or live SAM's my way.

[Linked Image]

Soon after we cleared the area our two strikers, DBond and Ice, went in and closed that airbase down:

[Linked Image]

Both Mac and I was ready for air-engagements after our HARM's were expended and we kept searching the sky for incoming air while attracting the interest from the local AAA. For me, the cockpit was lit up from AAA a few times but nothing too worrying.

The expected threat was not really there, no SAM traps for us and luckily no red air came heading in our direction.
(But I did hear AWACS call out enemy flights launching not too far from us)

I was surprised how easy the mission resolved itself considering the distance and geographical location of the target runway.

Great Job all participants.

Sadly the dedicated server gave us issues so we decided DBond would host the campaign mission and it went smooth as silk.

As soon as I get the resulting files back I will update the server for anyone to continue our common effort winning this campaign.

Yes, great job by all of the vpilots. We had some AI issues, and connection issues as Oden mentioned, so I hosted local instead and it went well from there. We put both SEAD pilots in the same element (Avenger) and left the two AI to fly Cobra. No issues after that, that I saw. Of course as host it should run well for me.

Before I give my viewpoint of the mission I just want to say thanks to Ice, Oden and Mac. A great group to fly with. They all know their stuff and performed flawlessly. I seem to learn something new every time I fly with these guys.

Taxi and takeoff went perfectly. We have been stationed at Osan for the entire campaign so the guys know it well. There is a maze of taxiways so it would be confusing for pilots unfamiliar. Avenger 6 (Oden and Mac) led us out of Osan, then Cobra 6 two minutes later, followed by Ice and I in Stud 6 last. We had loaded the strikers with two -120C, two -9X and six Durandals, with 370 gallon wing tanks, plus jammer. Winds were light, just 3 or so knots I think.

Ice calls "One, set" as I pull out on to Osan 090.

[Linked Image]

We climbed out through a solid deck to find a bright snowfield above. I need to learn the HUD controls or change color or something because sledding on the snow up there makes my HUD very difficult to read. We got the datalink set up and as we fenced in we could see the jamming Hornet approaching from the east right on time. I flew formation with Ice as the escorts ranged ahead and soon after steerpoint 4 Mac and Oden began calling out spikes. As the escorts engaged the SAM sites, Ice led me down through the thinning clouds while I dropped back to 5 miles trail. The weather broke just as we passed steerpoint 5 and it was rather nice in the target area. I saw no ground fire. As a matter of fact I saw nothing on my RWR the entire mission. I've had this happen a few times before and I do not know why. Not even the Vipers in my flight were lighting up. That's a pretty important piece of kit especially when you are flying a jet in to a SAM trap. But as one of the guys said I was probably better off, ignorance is bliss. I might have run away had I known what was looking at me biggrin

Flying off Ice's wing above the fields of snow. Something poetic about that.

Here I am trying to hide down low during the flight from steerpoint 5 to the IP.

[Linked Image]

I tried to stay in trail on Ice and watch as he turned at the IP. I somehow lost him about then and as I came upon the IP I turned right for 340 for the run-in. I kept triyng to spot Ice but couldn't. But I had to pick up the target visually to get lined up for the drop. I got lined up on the fat one on the right. Enroute to target I had set my bombs up with a 1 second delay, ripple all six with 777 feet spacing. I transitioned to CCIP at five miles and concentrated on staying centered with the strip. I don't recall what was being said on the R/T at this time I was concentrating so hard on hitting the target. After all of the setup I did creating this mission, after the dramatic opening post and after all the guys made it happen, I didn't want to embarrass myself missing the target or clipping the tower or something.

But I sensed from the radio that I had somehow gotten out ahead of Ice and now I was leading the run in. I usually set my Durandals wiitha very short AD, like a half second or less. This time I went with 1.00. During the run in I was getting a 'low' warning so needed to climb slightly before release. I was doing about 470 knots now and walked the pipper over the threshold. When it hit about what I judged to be just short of the center I pickled and the bombs came off straight away. When the sixth one pulsed off I called off target right and pulled it in hard. I wanted to avoid overflying the town to the northeast. I got down on the deck at full mil and gave Ice my heading while pumping out flares and chaff.. I didn't look back because I was low and again didn't want to embarrass myself by making a crater in the North Korean countryside. The other guys had all done their jobs and I was determined to do so as well.

I didn't see Ice's drop, but Oden was watching from his perch over the field, told us the bombs were good and snapped that great screenshot of the results that he posted above. Fantastic Oden! I love it. Thanks for having the presence of mind to grab that one. No BDA flight needed thanks to you.

I still managed to put one bomb through the threshold, but looking at those hits I am quite pleased. About 10 miles off the target we started to climb out and head for home. The flight home above the clouds was peaceful and serene. We all fenced out in short order with the escorts protecting our tails. Ice landed first and I followed him down. Managed a good one and taxiied off and shut it down.

That was a lot of fun. Great group and everyone got it done. I must say I expected far more mayhem over the target. The escorts did a flawless job and I wondered afterwards if the Hornet had had any effect? Sadly, our squid friend ate a SAM somewhere over Sinanju and was later rescued. Thanks everyone for making this happen and I hope we have many more like it thumbsup

Once things start getting serious in the mission I stop snapping screens so I have little else to show. I wish I had snapped a shot of P'yongyang as it appeared to my left just before the IP, some hills suddenly fell away from view and the city appeared spread out before me and closer than I was expecting. There were multiple fires burning where HARMs had found their mark, with smoke columns marking each one. It was cool.

Four cool Viper pilots arguing over who buys the first round.

Don't let the ratings fool you, the mission was a complete success, unless you were the Hornet driver

[Linked Image]

I was concerned about the AAA threat near the target prior to the mission I knew there were at least four AAA battalions within a few miles of the target. I was concentrating on flying the jet and didn't see a single round. But I KNEW they were shooting at me. That's a fact. It wasn't until the debrief that I saw how much. Ice and I had hundreds of rounds of every caliber --14.5, 23mm, 57mm, 85mm, 100mm-- fired on us in the target area. I'll copy the debrief.txt but it's way too long to post, so I'll put in code tags in case anyone wants to see this wasn't exactly a walk in the park as it might appear, even if I didn't notice any of it biggrin

Thanks Mac, same here.

I just noticed looking at that debrief txt. that Ice's and my bombs hit at virtually the same time, our first bombs are stamped 2 seconds apart. So we did this side by side like the hollywood sh!t we had talked about?! I gotta see the ACMI from that lol. Ice recorded one so perhaps he will share the highlights. If Oden was recording it on video from above that would be too much.

Thanks wombat, it was maybe a bit anti climactic after all of the build up. It all went off without a hitch (due to meticulous planning I am sure biggrin )

Yes, I wanted to comment on this...since I was host I was last to exit the 3D. When whoever was the third in line in the lineup screenshot exited, his jet closed the canopy and starting driving fast ahead, it looked like through the shelter. I expected an explosion. I think that jet then attempted to refly the mission? You can see my debrief is showing the mission as in progress. So perhaps that is why the ratings aren't complete and show the worse ratings. Just thinking out loud.

I've always suspected this happens because the player did not have the landing steerpoint selected, so when the AI takes over upon exit it wants to get to the selected steerpoint. I have no idea if that's actually true, but it's a theory.

A number of times I have watched as the AI reflies the missions we have just completed, and with no ordnance to boot.

Oden, if you want to post your shot of the debrief I will edit mine out so it looks like we did a good job smile

Yeah, I think if we exit the mission early and leave the jet, the AI takes over and tries to put itself where it thinks it should be at that point in time. In 4.32, the mission designers would intentionally roll back the landing time so that the AI stays on the ground after landing. We may need to confirm what the SOP is for 4.33. 3rd on the lineup would be me and I definitely shut down the jet and turned the electrical systems off. I'd be impressed if the jet took less than 20 minutes to startup smile

My debrief shows all of us doing very well:

Here's the initial turn in to the airfield. I turned late to allow you to catch up, might've turned in a bit late. I saw you cut the corner there too and you carried more airspeed than I had. IIRC, I had to hit the burner there a bit to catch up to you.
[Linked Image]

We overflew a AAA group and took a few shots but they didn't have radar guidance (no AAA spike on RWR) so there was nothing to worry about. I was dropping chaff by this point anyway so that would've confused the radar as well.
[Linked Image]

We were about 390m/0.2nm apart when we started dropping bombs. I didn't want to be totally abreast as we may need to go defensive and I didn't want us smacking into each other.
[Linked Image]

A good thing we turned right straight away as we were about to overfly another AAA group. Lots of fire from that group as we were egressing.
[Linked Image]

Here's a shot of my wingman as we were ingressing to the target.... the sheet of white gets a bit boring sometimes.
[Linked Image]

Me on the taxiway waiting for the rest of the package to come in. DBond and Oden on final.
[Linked Image]

Looking at the ACMI, the Hornet was at 12K-13K doing laps over the target area and then just disappeared. He wasn't being engaged by enemy aircraft and nothing was fired at him.... then again, I was almost 50nm from him so maybe whateve was happening to him was outside of my recording bubble.

A few thoughts for this mission:
1. I'm thinking we really should be using IVC or go to separate channels on TeamSpeak. The reason for this is I didn't want to be cluttering up the radios as the SEAD flight were doing their work. It was fine for this mission as there was literally nothing dangerous fired at us.... only a few SA-2s and a handful of SA-3s were fired and all on AI aircraft. If the SEAD flight had been a bit more busy then it would be hard for me and DBond to coordinate OUR attack as the radios would be busy with Mac and Oden's adventures. Another reason for separating comms for flights is because we don't do much brevity yet and sometimes when things get hairy, having to wait 5 seconds to have a clear comms channel can be a very long time to wait. If we are on different VHF comms channels, then lack of brevity won't be much of an issue. Ideally, in-flight comms will be on Victor, comms to other flighs will be on Uniform.

2. A-A Tacan... it's a great way to get separation distance reading. We already know the orientation of the the other flight, it'll be a great help to get a nice-and-quick distance reading as well. Dash-34 p.32-33 for this.

3. Overhead break... it's a good way to recover a lot of aircraft in a short span of time. It's also used to be able to visually inspect the runway and immediate airspace to determine if such a landing is advisable. Training Manual p.42-44 for this.

Just some thoughts for the next mission smile

Thanks to Oden for providing a visual confirmation of the damage! I remember in 4.32 where only the guy who dropped the bombs can see his craters so we had to self-BDA. Nice to see this isn't the case anymore! Looking forward to the next one and thanks to all the guys for flying a bit earlier so I can join in! biggrin

Shut off the engine before you exited 3D? If not, that may be why the AI was able to "go again".

Sorry I missed it. I thought I would be able to charm the missus into letting me skip out on Easter, but it was a no-go situation I'm afraid.

Congrats on a job well done.

BTW, the reason you are not supposed to fly along the runway when attacking, is you are essentially giving the AD a juicy straight and level target for about a half mile. If you ever watch the AI do it w/ Durandels, they fly about 45* offset to the runway and drop all ordinance w/ small spacing across one slab of runway. Then it's turn & burn time.

P.S. I usually do it the way you guys did it, flying along the runway, but I try to take out as many guns as possible around the airfield before hand.

Jet was definitely shut down, canopy open, chocks on.

Well, "how the AI does it" isn't really a very strong argument. I see the point regarding the air defenses though, but in the game, I've had an attack with 3 IR SAMs launched at me and still made it out alive. Countermeasures pay for themselves during things like these wink

Thanks for the great post Ice, and your analysis, always helpful.

What you show at the IP is how I pictured it after you explained over the R/T what had happened. Even then, I had no idea you were so close to me. In the end, that's a perfect attack. You can see in your ACMI my rising path as I adjusted against the low warning. You also set your bombs for one second, did you not? You look like you are getting yours off much lower than I am.

After the mission Mac and I shot the sh!t over the radio and talked about IVC, and we are game.

I was about 540ft AGL and you were 200ft above me on the attack.

What arming delay did you drop with? I'm going to go with .5 on future Durandal drops I think. I don't want to be over 500 AGL for these.

1 sec. arming delay. The funny thing is that I've noticed some Durandals slowing, turning to face downwards, then accelerating into the ground... expected behavior... but then there are others that don't. Still resulted in good explosions though.

Thanks Ice. Maybe I overcorrected against the low warning. Well, at least I didn't have to turn around an overfly again.

Well, well. Got some interesting info today, something I did not know. We are discussing SA-10s at the BMS forum and someone linked to this thread

https://www.bmsforum.org/forum/show...E&p=132069&viewfull=1#post132069

Based on that I think that the reason we had no mayhem was that Growler that I included to tag along. Maybe I should have kept him on the boat so that this one would have been more exciting biggrin
