Guys, what's the best way to do this? I want to transfer an interview from a cassette tape to an MP3.
I can connect the tape player to the line-in on my soundcard and I can hear it playing through the speakers although the sound level is quite low, plus there is a hum all the way through.I guess this is down to the equipment used to make the original recording.
I'm looking for the easiest way to do this and I'm not too bothered about trying to clean up the audio unless there is an idiot-proof way to do this.
Do I need additional software? (I'm using Win 10),if so any recommendations you might have would be great.

Use Audacity, and Record from Line In, then amp and run noise reduction, save.

Pick up a cheap usb device for it. https://smile.amazon.com/Capture-Ed...id=1491501079&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4I've used similar devices for converting vhs. Works great for such old, low quality media.

Thanks guys. I did a test with Audacity but I think the sound levels were too high. When played back on a CD player it distorted in places where it got louder. I'll have another go tomorrow when I should be able to nail it.

if it "clips" ( overloads ) on the way in to the computer, no amount of processing will fix it. Have to re-record with lower levels. Setting the output of your tape deck and the input of your soundcard so the loudest portion still leaves a smidgen of headroom will give the best results.
Audacity or Sound Recorder will work fine for this.

Yup,I'll have to re-do it. Whilst recording, the sound level frequently hit max. Also,I've now been told I was given a copy of a copy so hopefully when I get my hands on the original tape things will sound better as well. Thanks for your input guys.
