Hi all,

I want to update to the latest BMS version but I need to install the original 4.0 from my CD right?
Anyone know how I can get the installer (setup.exe) from my original Falcon 4.0 CD to work to insatll in Windows 7?

Is it some compatibility setting?

Regards,

Is the setup.exe not responding or do you get some error?

Yes, 4.0 must be installed, BMS will check it each time you fire up F4.

Have you tried running the exe as an administrator?

Check Ice's guide here

Yep tried running as admin, same thing...

I think the problem is the installer is 32 bit and Windows 7 system is 64 bit... anyone know any work arounds to get the installer to run?

Seems like everyone/install guides are for the GOG/Steam etc versions not the original disk...

It won't help much, but so that you have more info... I installed from an original Falcon disk on Win 10 with no issues. I don't believe I had to do anything about compatibility settings. My point is that at least in my case it is on a 64-bit OS, so the 32 bit thing might not be the issue. Of course it's 7 vs 10 so I don't know.

Here's a not quite handy link

http://www.51stvfw.com/mobile/forum/viewthread/m/12860957/id/26601960-falcon-40-installation-issues

This guy got it to work in Win 10 safe mode.

Anyway, if it were me and I spent more than a couple hours trying without success to install it I would just get the GoG or Steam version.

Haven't installed for ages from a CD... I've even removed my DVD drive now and put a 140mm fan in front of the 5.25 drive bays for even more airflow. mdwa, can you post pics of this error? I'll dig out my Falcon 4.0 CD and try this on my son's computer.

Hi Ice,

I put the original F4 CD in, cancel the autorun, double click on setup.exe:

[Linked Image]

Then I just get the "thinking cursor" https://fud.community.services.supp...fid=cfe90af6-ab12-40c6-9a8f-8c6759811e44 for about 5 seconds then nothing...

Same thing happens when I use autorun and then click install Falcon...

Damn...

I just tried on my Windows 7 laptop and it installs fine!

Both my laptop and desktop are running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Error described in above post only occurs on desktop.

Could it be the DVD drive?

Any suggestions...?

Could it be that I have Falcon 4.32 and 4.33 installed already?
Should I uninstall these first?

Should not matter but since it is a fairly fast reinstall I would suggest removing them first.

+1 to Oden's reply. Might as well start "fresh" that way any issues can easily be diagnosed compared to a copy-paste install.

Uninstalled everything Falcon related - still same problem.

I don't think it's the CD/DVD drive either - I made an ISO of the disk on the laptop and then on the desktop mounted it as a drive from a external hard drive and still same problem...

Could it be antivirus related, or firewall (unlikely..) or maybe a registry entry?

On the desktop it doesn't even do the Windows "Do you want to let XX make changes to this computer..." warning message.. whereas it goes to that message as soon as I double click on the setup.exe on the other computer...

Interesting... how about copying the entire contents of the CD onto a drive then running setup from there? Or mounting the ISO from a virtual drive?

Do you have anything in your eventlog related to when you click setup.exe?
You mentionend compatability mode earlier, tried setting setup.exe in win95 or so?

Hi Ice, Oden,

Tried mounting as ISO and same result.

Tried compatibility to Win95/Admin and WinME/Admin, and not only for setup.exe but all other exe files on the disk which setup may point to but no go... Also I don't think it is a compatability thing as when I put it into the other computer setup.exe runs fine with no compatibility changes.

I will try copying the CD to the internal drive.

I will check the eventlog.

Will report back on the above (at work now and tonight...)

Could it be remaining registry entries?
I had both BMS 4.32 and 4.33 installed as separate installations. I uninstalled them both (correctly not just deleted) but I think there are still registry entries remaining - I will check and take some screenshots of them - maybe they are interfering with the setup.exe progressing when clicked on?

Thanks for the help so far appreciated...

Follow the link in this post to get Dunc's registry cleaner and run it if you need to.
