I keep wondering if Saturn could be seen with this camera, it seems like maybe it could... EDIT: Lol nevermind, Youtube "read my mind" and served up a video of exactly that - and I haven't been doing any searches on ANYTHING planetary/astronomical lately! Link below moon zoom video....

I picked up a new CCD camera at a great discount last week. Still getting to grips with it, but this seemed like a great thread to share my first light image.

This is a very basic, quick and dirty image of M42 in Orion. No guiding and I didn't get the mount accurately aligned, so I should be able to get some nice shots with it going forward.

Here's a lunar eclipse i was able to catch with just a Nikon P90 a few years ago:

And another shot from last year of the moon that I took in Poland with the same camera:

Here's an interesting pic. I took this with a Nikon P90 set on a tripod with the shutter speed set to slow and caught the last time the Space Shuttle would dock with the ISS:

Nice shots Bones! You caught a piece of history there in the Shuttle/ISS shot..

I pulled an all night imaging session with my new camera the night before last. I think I am getting the hang of it, although there is still much to learn about the finer points.

And M27, the Dumbell Nebula

I looks like it will be clear tonight, but the Moon is going to be a problem. I'll probably still see what I can get though.

That's pretty damn cool. Just my measuring those lines and knowing a few other figures (ISS orbital velocity at that time, exposure time, altitude), you could calculate the shuttle's closure rate and docking velocity. smile

From the looks of it, it truly does take a while.

Re: the Shuttle and ISS, thanks. It was neat seeing these two "stars" chase each other across the night sky. They moved pretty fast, too.

If you are interested in the ISS and are a radio ham then there is the ARISS organisation they do outreach programs to let students contact the astronauts onboard the space station ask questions and so.

When Tim Peake was on the station they set up contacts with schools in the UK and they livestreamed the contacts on Twitch and YouTube for other schools and anyone else to follow.

Quote
Radio Contacts with the ISS
Scheduled ARISS Amateur Radio contacts with the ISS are conducted either by direct contact, or by telebridge contact. The method used will depend on the radio station equipment and experienced radio amateur volunteers available to support the contact as well as technical issues related to the orbit of the ISS over the contact location.

Because the ARISS program supports the testing and installation of amateur radio stations aboard the ISS, astronauts have the equipment available to also make unscheduled ham radio contacts with radio amateurs all around the world on a one-to-one basis during their personal time. With a very limited investment in amateur radio equipment, licensed hams, including students who have access to amateur radio stations in a classroom, can make individual contact with astronauts aboard the ISS by learning to follow the published orbital schedule and practice some basic amateur radio contact techniques.
