No, they give you juice, cookies, and sometimes a gift card somewhere, but never cash. THEY sell the blood to hospitals and stuff and that pays for their salaries and equipment and leases and such, but they can't afford to pay donors too. The Jedi Master

That's less than the $10 gift card to the movies they do up here! Cheapskates.

Yes. They have quarterly blood drives at work and I donate at each one. I used to also give Platelets, but the closed down the facilities nearby and stopped sending the mobile platelet bus to work.

Here it's either a useless tote bag or a really neat t-shirt. Sometimes the shirt is an "I gave" generic one, but other times it's one of the two college football teams (RTR) or something witty. My favorite is one where there are three panels, one with a shark biting a guy, a UFO abducting a guy, and safe falling on a guy that says something to the effect of "sometimes you just need blood" Oh, and cookies and juice.

Donating 1 unit of red blood cells- must wait 56 days( 8 weeks) before you can donate red blood cells again and of course a double red blood cell donation you have to wait 4 months(16 weeks). You can donate *platelets thru apheresis once every 7 days and up to 24 times in one calendar year. I tried to donate a week later once but my platelets level was too low, so I just do it every 2-4 weeks now, alternating arms. Sometimes I'll give my veins a longer break between donations after donating for so many years. I've had problems with my left arm the last two times I've tried to donate with it( blood flow into the apheresis machine stopped after a couple mins). The nurses there thought it might of been due to being a little dehydrated. I think I probably had too much salty foods- chips, processed foods day the week prior to the first stopped donation. I came back a week later, making sure I was hydrated and watching my salt intake. After the second stopped donation, I think all the scar tissue they had to push through(from about 30 years of donating) was at least a factor. I've used my left arm mostly to donate and the donation site has been in one vein, within about a 1 inch area of that vein near my elbow joint. I've donated using my right arm the last two times- no problems, go figure. I use to have really good veins but I stopped exercising like I use to( too sedentary for the last 8-10 years). I need to get back in shape and lose some body fat. I'm working on that now and hoping to lose 20-30 lbs. Registered nurses at two blood banks I've donated to have told me donors are never paid for blood products that people will receive (at least in California, but I thought the whole US and since the 80's) due to the danger of individuals in the past donating for money who weren't honest about their health history. I think they said you can get paid for blood products to be used for research *purposes only but I don't think they do that at any regular blood donor centers. I don't know where you would go to get paid donating for research purposes. They've also told me it can be a good idea for men in particular to donate because men can build up too much iron in their blood. Googling "Can men have too much iron and how does that happen?" brought up some interesting information. Great discussions and great to hear about past, present and future donors. Thanks to all.

Dart, my donor centers need to talk to your donor centers on ideas for t-shirts. The t-shirts are the generic "I gave" ones but we finally got a good one this past Halloween, an all-black t-shirt with "it bites to need blood" on the front and ' feed the need to bleed" on the back.

Used to donate blood at the airport when I used to work there. Every time they'd come around. They would give us cookies and orange juice when we were done. Still remember one guy who passed out when he stood up. After my bout with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and my chemotherapy, however, I was told that I could never give blood again.

They won't let my wife donate because she grew up in Europe where there was mad cow disease. Even though she is most likely way past any carrier infection, they are that cautious about it and still refuse her.
I thought for sure they would refuse me the last time because I was in a part of Mexico that had Zika cases, but apparently as far as the CDC can tell, it doesn't stay in your blood for more than 2 months. But it can stay in other fluids such as semen as long as 6 months.

I like when they give out the Dunkin Donuts gift cards.

Back from the depths! I hate to say it took me this long, but I got my health in line and kind of forgot about this. That said, I heard about a Halloween blood drive that reminded me this was a goal. Went in early and donated for the first time. I did double red blood cells, so it took longer, but it wasn’t bad. My wife did a regular blood donation that was a lot faster. I let them pick what they wanted from me. Got pretty lightheaded and tingley, but they warned me it would happen once they put back saline, so no big deal. I can go again in Feb, so I’ll plan on the regular Valentine’s day drive. Got the Halloween tshirt too. A size small as a goal in my weight loss adventure.

So the last time I went to donate blood, they asked as usual if I'd been out of the country, but instead of asking about the UK, they wanted to know about Europe.
I've always freely stated that I was stationed in Germany from 87-89, but this time they made frowny faces and banned me from giving blood ever. Ever. Apparently the mess halls bought British beef, so we possibly got mad cow disease markers.
Sheesh, what do they do for blood donations in Europe?

Wizard, many years ago in college a classmate got up after giving blood and fell flat on his face.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Other than being pretty lightheaded, the only issue was my own fault. Forgot I couldn’t move my arm and tried to reach for my phone to turn it off. Bent my arm, it didn’t feel good for the rest of the day, but no damage. Just stupid. Feeling ok today and could workout again, but could tell I was less than 100% energywise. Worth it!

What DO they do in Europe? I suppose that if all European blood is considered "tainted" then it doesn't matter if those with tainted blood receive more tainted blood via transfusion.

They asked me about it too, a range of years like Dart mentioned, 80’s-90’s. I would think its just the risk of tainted blood, it isn’t like everyone has mad cow. People up to their 20’s would be born after the dates they mentioned and not at risk, but will still need blood reserves. Do they have a way of sterilizing, or import blood? Or maybe storing your own blood at a blood bank is common?
