I have shown pictures of how shallow the Gulf of Mexico looks from the air and thought I would show it from a boat.

This is out about 3 maybe 3 1/2 miles. Here is a shot to shore. A good distance.

And what it is like looking at the bottom. Depthfinder shows 6 feet. Running down along the coast it varied from from 5 to 11 feet.

This shows how the channel looks. You can see the dredged part as the darker color. The channel is dredged out to 12 feet and out about a mile and a half. Interesting is that to the sides of the dredged channel is a shallower line on each side where they dump the dredging.

Here you can see the last marker and you can see how far out from shore it is. You have to know and allow for it at night or poor visibility. You don't aim in at the harbor as normal. Have to stay well out and find them, then follow them in. You can actually walk out into the Gulf a few hundred yards before yo start hitting spots that are over your head.

We were headed down to the original Hooters restaurant.

Sweet. I remember even as a kid, walking waaay out on the water at Grand Isle, LA. before the water reached my chin.

Going to spend a day on the Gulf next month (Pensacola).

Nah, the lawyers tend to stay beachside.

Ah, that explains why Florida has such a large over-abundance of them.

You mean land sharks? They are the worst kind.

Is that out in the Keys? I dove Key Largo once and that channel with the markers looks familiar.

No, it was around Clearwater and New Port Richey.

Thanks for being specific, oldgrognard. I've always been into maps and found the Hooters on Google Earth from your pics (among many, they're popular in the area).

Florida uses the same markers everywhere. Key West, Islamorada, Tampa, Pensacola, Jax, Sebastian inlet, you can't tell where you are by them. No matter where I've gone out on the water, they look the same.

Although that water looks a little verboten......I'd avoid swimming there, for some reason wink

Went to the restaraunt on the river that has the fake shark hanging at the pier.

I had fish and chips. It was good.
