This site will guess the movie you are thinking of in 30 questions or less.

http://filmillion.com/

Although it could not guess this one for me: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280609/ (By the way...awesome indie movie - Lucius Vorenus is in it)

But to be fair...that was like my 7th time. it guessed all the other 6.

We should start a game on SimHQ where people post 5 clues and others try to guess the film!

Holy smokes. The website guessed "A Clockwork Orange" which is the film I picked to try and trick it. Nicely done whoever created that website test.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Ok so needless to say, the test is far from being perfect.

Oh, I didn't mean that as derogatory at all. I do think it's amazing that you can play 'twenty questions' with a computer program and it can guess the correct movie more often than not. I would guess that older movies like my example would be harder for it simply because of their age.

I tested your theory and it seems correct. The website test failed to get that I was thinking about "Birth of a Nation". smile

It guessed my movie right: Event Horizon. Pretty crazy because I answered some of the questions ambiguously.

Is there a chance this is using your recent browsing history--i.e. Amazon video to get to its answer?

Wow and it got Akira too.

It's one of those algorithms that learns from every user. It will already have a huge database, and each time it gets one wrong, the user tells it information in the form of the movie name + some detail about it. And so the possible branching questions is modified.

The test is also interesting in that it shows just how many movies share the same basic storylines. Some film scholars have mentioned that all films are based largely on a set of about 30 basic premises.

That's a good point and why I find this interesting that it can be accurate despite similarities with many other movies.

Tested it again for Dog Soldiers and it still couldn't get after 40 questions. Too unknown a movie perhaps.

V for Vendetta it got very quickly, Mad Max Fury Road took 34 questions. The Red Baron it didn't get...

Pretty impressive.

What were the questions for that one like? I'll take a guess.

1. Does it have a needlessly fictional love interest?

2. Do the planes look like and fly like video game jets?

3. Does it have a sappy sentimental message?

16 questions for The Dark Knight and Top Gun

Wow...

I think it's interesting because it appears there are only a few very major questions that separate one movie from the next.
