Take a guess, take a gander. If you stacked all the gold that's ever been mined in a pile, it would only fill up about 1/3 of the Washington Monument... Lot less than you ever thought..

Boom... Mind blown.

Well, most people that hold physical gold in their hand for the first time will say that "it's heavy" ... what they mean is, it's dense. If you think that something made of lead is heavy, well, the same in gold would weigh almost exactly TWICE as much. So, a cube of 17m length is about all the gold there is, as far as mankind could retrieve it in the past six thousand years. There'sa lot more gold in the earth. But most of it is concentrated in the inner planetary core where we can't reach it, buried under several thousand kilometers of liquid iron.

Most important is how much gold is left.

Only a cube of 17m per side? That is very hard to believe indeed!

Several decades ago I read somewhere that the estimated amount of gold would fit into a room 70 feet x 70 feet x 70 feet, which works out at around 21.3 meters cubed. I might imagine that cube has increased somewhat over the years, but I'd guess not exceeding 23 m cubed

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Almost all of it. for a start there is nearly 20 million tons of it dissolved in the oceans. And more on the seafloor: "Currently, there really isn’t a cost-effective way to mine or extract gold from the ocean to make a profit. But, if we could extract all of that gold, there’s enough of it that each person on Earth could have nine pounds of the precious metal. Eureka!" http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/gold.html

There are questions about how much gold is there. There hasn't been an audit done in years.

But, the small amount of gold is very surprising - thanks for that bit of info!

That doesnt look right, gold has been used for many things, eletrical cables, part of components, coins.........no way its just that much if you need ferries to take them to national bank.

It is. Because of the density - not the volume. And because of security concerns, whenever you move a significant amount.

It's the reason that gold always more-or-less retains its value. Gold is always a good safe place to put your money. (As long as you actually have the gold. I'm suspicious about companies that sell paper gold :)).

Wouldn't that drastically drive DOWN the price of gold though? Talk about market saturation.

Of course. Just like the idea to bring some Platinum-heavy asteroid into Earth orbit for space mining. It would definitely change the market balance, no doubt.

That said, as long as it costs more to extract the gold from ocean water than you gain by selling it, the oceanic gold deposit is about as safe as are the billions of tons in the earth's core.

I wouldn't like to see the sea sucked of all its gold though. There's probably some property of nature that somehow depends on it.
